As others have said, Larry Grayson was a flamboyantly, very camp gay comedian and tv host, but it was back when it was illegal and unpopular to be gay. This meant that he had to walk a tightrope between being who he was while staying safe from reprisals and so he never addressed his sexuality publicly but did discuss these in his unpublished memoirs. Homosexual relationships were illegal in England and Wales until the 1967 Sexual Offences Act (when Grayson was 44), and even after that coming out as gay would have damaged his television career. During his life Grayson was targeted by gay rights campaigners - who picketed his shows calling for him to be open about his sexuality, while the Gay Liberation Front also protested against his stereotypical camp portrayals of gay men for comedic purposes. It was a very difficult time to be a gay man in the British entertainment industry.
You could say that this is Britain's answer to The Odd Couple. Quality writing = great comedy. The shop setting allowed for new & old characters to interact with Arkwright & Granville.
You know there are still shop keepers like Arkwright. Open all hours,. Last of the summer wine Two of the best comedies of the earlie 80s. Barbra flyn also famed in Cracker. The late Robbie coltrane. That the other one some mothers do have them.
OMG Alan thank you very very much for starting to watch open all hours again I can’t wait to watch the rest of the episodes with you & seeing your reactions I love comedy videos from you thanks again mate love to the family
My doctor has signed me off from and I was feeling really down, but watching you react has made a laugh so much. Mrs Blewit is played by Kathy Staff who famously played a similar character in Roy Clarke's Last of the Summer Wine (he wrote this show) called Nora Batty. I would suggest watching it but it is the world's longest sitcom as it ran for 31 years. Roy Clarke also created very similar character to Arkwright in Last of the Summer wine, called Auntie Wainwright she ran a second hand shop. Just like Arkwright she loved money, hated spending and could sell you anything
I'm so pleased you get the "English" humour in these shows.A number of series were done in the US but worked over for American taste. Nearly all failed.
Nice one mate! They dont make em like this anymore. Have you heard of Dad's Army? Another older British comedy set in WW2 centred around the british Homeguard. Worth a look. The first couple of seasons or first 3 maybe are in black and white until colour came in. Edit: Just seen you know it. I'll check them out 👍🏻
Open all Hours..brilliant like so much that Barker did! A..ar...ark..ark..arkwright continually trying to keep Granville innocent. 'The look Arkwright gives when Nurse Emanuelle pulls stricken Granville to her b..bo..bo..bosom is comedy gold!
I love your laugh....it could scare crows !! I have always been a bit in love with the milkwoman 😍 Larry Grayson was a beloved , gay, game show host in the late 1970s and early 1980s. I have the boxed set of Open All Hours. When the TV is rubbish, which it usually is, I put this on for a good laugh.🤣 Like Arkwright said once, "Gladys has a backside like a sc, sc, school bus" !!🚍🍑
Oddly I just re-watched this in the last 7-10 days. Still funny this time and as a bonus seeing you getting happy with it is even better. Thanks Alan. Be well.😉
One of my favourite British comedy classics. Ronnie Barker was a genius. Thanks for the reaction 😂
His stutter is comedy gold. Genius.
When a comedian breaks down during a sketch it is called corpseing, Nurse Gladys barely avoids corpseing in every episode.
Granville's evil laugh at the end always gets me 🤣
I'd forgotten how funny this was. Haven't seen it for years. Great to watch it again and see your reaction 😂

Hello Alan. Welcome back to the Yorkshire of my childhood. Folk like these were really out there, except Granville, who stayed at home.
You know there are still shop keepers like Arkwright. Open all hours,. Last of the summer wine Two of the best comedies of the earlie 80s. Barbra flyn also famed in Cracker. The late Robbie coltrane. That the other one some mothers do have them.
Open all hours the .most underrated British comedy ever
this episode is one of my faves when he was walking with the money belt on I just defend in to fits of laughter ! glad your liking it to :D
I love this show such a great cast and excellent writing
Gladys "Who's he got in there"?
Arkwright "The milk woman".
Gladys "Oh God! Is it that time already?"
That always cracks me up.
Thank you for sharing ... Such GREAT memories
Barbara Flynn who pays the milklady is the sexiest woman to appear on British TV and appeared in some of our best TV series
Great to see you revisiting Open All Hours, don't forget about Rising Damp.
Best wishes to you and your family from Wales.

When Britain does comedy they do it in style
It's nice to see the old cars

I’ll maintain to my dying breath that Open all Hours is the best comedy we’ve ever produced!
It's great writing and acting. It was filmed about 20 miles from where I live

The Hunch Crutch of Notre-Dame.

I think that hotel is in Doncaster I have stayed their
British TV is the best in the world.
Porridge sitcom is great too 😂😂😂 🇬🇧
Imagine Scrooge McDuck coming into the shop and trying to wangle a bargain price from Arkwright lol
There is no way Arkright would waste good money on a back vault like that spendthrift duck! Oxo tins came free with the oxo.
Ronnie Barker he looks so different when in Porridge
always a great watch
Wait until you see the black widow Mrs feverstone arkwright is frightened of her she's after him❤😂😅
Check out Rowley Birkin QC from the Fast Show
Hasn't Arkwright ever heard of a bank account?
He doesn't trust them. Once he has his hands on the cash, he isn't letting go.
Another great video 😅
Larry Grayson was a famous homosexual.
Gold.
Poor Yank doesn't get half the humour. . . God bless him
👌😂😂😂❤
