    Not an english native here but I wanted to point out that not that the example is wrong but funny, the one that says "whenever I get late I am sad" cuz at first it sounded like "whenever I get laid I am sad" lol. Wouldn't it be the same if the example was "whenever I am late I am sad"? Asking to any english native speaker. Anyway this a great lesson. Helped me a lot.

      Yeah as a native English speaker, it would be more normal to say “whenever I am late I get sad” rather than “whenever I get late I get sad”. It’s kind of weird to say “whenever I get late”.

    FYI, Pierre, in English we say, I am late, you are late. For us lateness is a state of being. "Get" in English to an American means to acquire, obtain or procure something. We would never say, "get late".
    Thank you so much for this incredible piece of work, Pierre. It has been a revelation and a great help to me! I never realized the French present tense could be so flexible and yet sound so good..
    The biggest problem we encounter in learning French is often we are given slightly improper translations of French the way Americans expect to hear something said.
    Instead, what we need is to be given translations exactement the way a Frenchman would say them. We already know how an American would say something. We want to know what it is exactly that French people expect to hear from us while speaking French. It is your language. We must learn to adapt to the correct use of your language in your country.

    But in English to say someone is hungry is not a feeling it is a statement. What your saying in french with 'A' Avoir possessive is that someone has something I.e Il a Faim - He has hunger. Why not use Etre as the verb 'to be' hungry I.e I'l est Faim He is hungry.

    • @eduardofernandezceron3118
      @eduardofernandezceron3118 4 года назад +4

      Languages work differently from each other.
      For example in Spanish, French and Italian we use the verb TENER-AVOIR-AVERE (TO HAVE) to express that we are hungry:
      Tengo hambre (I am hungry.lit. I have hunger) just like in French.
      The same happens with age.
      Spanish: Tengo 23 años (I have 23 years, instead of I am 23 years old) French: J'ai 23 ans (I have 23 years, instead of I am 23 years old, again)
      It may not make sense to an English speaker just as it doesn't make a lot of sense to a Spanish or French speaker to use the verb "to be" to express hunger or age.
      It really helps to stop trying to translate every word and just start learning how people express themselves in their language.
      Hope this helps! .
      Just a fun fact. In Spanish there is a way to translate I am hungry literally: Yo estoy hambriento BUT people don't really express themselve like that in every day conversations and it may sound a bit weird in some cases.
      Have a nice day :)
