- Following on from the Bowmore distillery visit video I thought I'd review a couple of their whiskies - the standard sherried 15 year old and the travel retail 'Golden & Elegant' matured in first-fill bourbon casks.

VERY INTERESTING : i immediately got the cigar-ash smoke nose similar to Auchie, as you had so well described - also seen in Auchi 18 (tobacco leaf ??). nice review !
Still amazes me how you can pick out so many different notes! Nice review man!
I was gonna spring this one on you side by side with the Auchentoshan Three Wood and see if you could tell the difference. See if the sherry influence really is that similar 😜
It's all practice - you'll be doing the same in a few more tasting sessions 😉🥃👍
Im happy I found this brilliant channel. Immediately sighned. Thanks, Ben. What a great content. I also liked the bourbon 15 YO better, had a full 1L bottle from my DF store. Really nice, you pretty much nailed it. The best part is probably finish. Really looking forward to buy another one. But! Their previous 15YO Travel retail exclusive, The Mariner, was all around better and undoubtedly superb. Too bad they don't sell it anymore. Cheers.
It's interesting how many lesser-known official releases Bowmore have done which people hold in high regard. It's kind of cool to see them do limited releases of more exclusive stock like that! I'm looking forward to trying some independently bottled Bowmore too 😁
Cheers RedboRF 🥃👍
I really appreciate your depth here. I have not had Bomore 15 in a few years. Lately it's been beat up a lot online, and I was very thankful to hear your tasting notes, and find some of my memories hidden in there. Cheers!
Yeah Bowmore gets a bad wrap from a lot of people but I feel some of it is prejudice due to the colouring/chill filtration, I'm sure it would be better without but that doesn't automatically make them bad the way they have been bottled. I still find plenty to enjoy in them but do look forward to finding an independent bottle or two 😜
Thanks Jon 🥃👍
I love the Bowmore 18, and the fifteen has a bit more flavor... It's not something that I'm in the mood for every day, but it is a decent whisky...
Just recorded my review of the 18 - it's not one I come by regularly but I enjoy it each time I do. Like you say, it definitely hits the spot when you're in the right mood 🥃👍
Bowmore 15 combines signature fishy peat with treacle toffy notes - yes on paper it is disjointed but in reality it makes for a fascinating whisky.
Odd and enjoyable - a guilty pleasure 😉🥃👍
I am just about to add independent bottle of Bowmore to our blind tasting. It is a 16 year 53% and looks about shade 08 on your scale. Of course who knows when it might show up. We did like the official Bowmore 18 on our original tasting and I wonder what we will think of it when it shows up again. Bowmore the guilty pleasure.
That colour at that ABV is considerably lighter! I'm going to have to keep an eye out for some independent bottlings. How much did that one set you back? I've got a sample of the 18 year old coming up soon too.
At least it kind of reassures me that I'm not just prejudiced against the colouring when I pick up on it!
@@WhiskyGeek It is a odd one branded 'Wanted. The smallest whisky shop on four wheels' $75 at Scotch Whisky Auctions +10% + shipping
That is an unusual one - interested to hear what you make of it when it finally comes up! 👍
Great review as always mate. Haven't tried any Bowmore yet, but i've heard that independent bottlings are the way to go. Is that your experience?
Cheers Stephen! Yeah I've definitely been hearing the same thing recently - I'm yet to try an independent bottling though. I can totally see how natural & unfiltered it would improve considerably.
The 12 year old isn't a bad place to start to be honest, cheap and will let you test the waters before going for one of the more expensive IBs - although the IB is more likely to win you over 😉👍
@@WhiskyGeek @Stephen Well like I think I might have said previously indie bottlings of BOWMORE as well as other single malts do offer an interesting alternative, but the problem is that it is most often single casks or small batches that are often quickly discontinued (so it is hard to advise a special bottling you probably won't find after) & get (for the most sought after) quickly pricey on the secondary market..some can stay unsold longer though when the value seem less interesting (rightly or wrongly) to the majority of customers...
The other option for me is the undisclosed bottling for which you know or are almost sure they come from BOWMORE or others distilleries you target. For instance (even if it is coloured & chill filtered) The unexpensive Ileach Cask strength from Vintage Malts is most probably a young BOWMORE & the Finlaggan (to take another example) is most probably a young LAGAVULIN (most of the time) & even if they are punchy malts I do recommend them....Great vaIue whiskies. I also heard that some Islay Malts from VEGA were great, and I don't even mention killer bottlings from Elixir Distillers (in the "Elements of Islay" series or "Port Askaig" series, for instance)..Some SMWS probably as well...I also recommend the 7 yo Islay malt from Cadenhead (good value). Gordon & MacPhail did propose some great 8 yo Islay malts a few years ago so gotta watch their offers as well. As I haven"t tasted many That Boutique-Y-Whisky cie, alas can"t recommend none at the moment but surely Dave can on Twitter.
@@GregsWhiskyGuide Thought the Ileach CS was 5yo Laphroaig?
@@Mark_R_ Like I said can be sure, as batches & sourcing vary...got one home now (reduced to 40 %) I'm pretty sure it is not a Laphie but it's my impression, not more
@@GregsWhiskyGuide Ah yeah, my bottle is 3yrs old, batches as u say.... everything I sense shouts young Lap with added colour for this one!
informative as ever!
Thanks Chris! 🥃👍
