      @@Edwin-E Came out great. There _were_ a few lessons learned that no videos out there have gone into though. Some of that I kind of found for myself. Others were in a document I happened on from a forum link. It was obviously from Taylor with a step by step process that included pictures. Including order of bolt removal. I would up making my own custom tool to do the removal of the vertical bolt. The one in the kit is kind of lame. In fact, the kit they sold me was lame. Lots of stuff you don't need. But I did get awesome action, and coincidentally I used the same values as you did. Figured I'd try those and redo if necessary. No need, perfect playability first time. Not necessarily an operation for the technically challenged or faint of heart, but if you're reasonably competent and like me, there's no Taylor authorized repairman close it's definitely worth it to try.

    • @Edwin-E
      @Edwin-E 5 лет назад

      That's nice to hear. So, Taylor are already the selling the shims and tool kit for this job? A lot of people are asking me on this video.

    • @gregnieman7217
      @gregnieman7217 5 лет назад +3

      Yeah, but it's a good news/bad news situation. On one hand, they used to send these for free and now it's a 50 buck charge. And as I said, it's a "kit" for guitar techs that has tools any tech would already have. So it's just kind of gouge, IMO. And as I said, that pdf with the steps (and pictures) used to be on their website, but it's been removed. So they'll sell the kit, but make it harder for you to use it. I really like the NT system, but I would have to give Taylor a C- on the customer service end for how they've approached this. Especially given the shortage of certified technicians and the fact that a lot of people simply cannot or will not pack up their guitar and ship to one of these.
      Here's the link for interested parties. Power to the people!

      That's nice but why wouldn't they sell you shims? Of course maybe you wanted to pay someone else to do it and that's cool, but many of us would want to do the job ourselves since it is so easy. I wish Taylor made nicer guitars but i didn't realize they all use bolt on necks before i bought mine. I was told by several people their Taylors need resets about every two to three years and that must suck. If you are not allowed to buy shims i guess the scam is working for Taylor. Never will buy another one myself. Not worth the hassle trying to get parts. I have a 1952 Gibson es-295 that had never had a neck reset. Actually i have a 52 and a 55. None of my high end guitars have needed a neck reset and a fine guitar should not need a neck reset in less than ten years at least. This is a scam. And i want to know who owns any Taylor and can honestly say they sound as good as a real High end Martin or Gibson? Be honest.

    Very good job man! I sure like Taylor's neck joint system! That's way better than a glued dove tail joint! Both in removal and angle reset! Just bolts and shims instead of steam and wood work! I had this done by Taylor Amsterdam on my GSmini. They also fixed a few minor finish flaws which I pointed out, not all perfectly though. I don't know whether it's the same on the 214 but on the GSmini the lacquer was applied over the join between the neck and body resulting in messy broken lacquer on the edges, which they didn't bother cleaning up when reassembling. It plays great now but disappointed at that.

    How did you talk them into sending you the shims? I asked to purchase a set of shims and they refused. I bought a saddle an fit it to get the advertised factory action at the 12th. But it is lower at each end than the specs you list. They told me to to take it to Sweetwater (local authorized repair) - who I love, but when going to have tech work done there is a secretary between me and the tech. I am not okay with that. I am either too picky or love my guitars too much for that. Tried it once, wrote down the specs I wanted to hit 5/64s and 3/64s with 0.010 relief. Didn’t get it. Paid 100 bucks for a set of strings and maybe a truss rod tweak.

      It helps if you can convince them you're capable, but their default is to send you to an authorized tech if you live near one. I suspect Edwin-E doesn't have a tech nearby. While I applaud Edwin-E's effort here, there are a few more steps he omitted as far as the clamping/bolting order thing goes. There are several ways to screw up your guitar in this process if you're not careful, so Taylor, always conscious of its reputation when a botched repair finds it way to the next buyer, is conservative about who gets the shims. I'd find a Taylor tech and deal direct with him/her, rather than the Sweetwater middle man.

    • @Edwin-E
      @Edwin-E 4 года назад

      If you have under-saddle pickup, are you using original saddle? If not, and if you changed to bone, sometimes, it happens that some part of bone saddle is less dense than other which leads to unbalanced sound. If you are using original saddle and someone has shaved the bottom and not fully flat, this may also cause the problem. If everything else is fine as far as physical parts, I am worried it has something to do with the pickup or EQ.

      But that's why Martins take more time making sure there necks match there bodies and not just mass produce and slap together. But you have to hand it to Taylor they have found a cheap way of selling a very hi priced guitar. For the record I have a 814ce that needs "another" set up after only 2 years a Martin 00028 that has never needed a set up after 10 years and a Gibson J15 that is going on 4 years and never has needed a set up. I'm not biased I love all American made guitars but I do wish Taylor would step up there quality and make it match their price or lower their price to match their quality.

    Yamaha APXT2 guitar...6 months old, D string sounds dead between 9th and 13th frets....will adding a shim help or not?

    • @Edwin-E
      @Edwin-E 6 лет назад

      Changing shim is only to adjust string height. Dead string sounds on 9th and 13th fret may be due to fret leveling or fret crowning problem.

    • @Edwin-E

      It is a big job for glued neck. Luthiers remove one fret wire need the body of the guitar and use steam to soften the glue before they can separate the neck from the body.

    a little off topic, but half a dozen of my 50yo guitars have never ever needed a reset, thx to obviously poor quality of taylor my gsmini needs one after just 5 years ... imho taylor should freely deliver these shims with every guitar for every owner, or at least sell them officially, but they dont. total fail, so no big fan of taylor guitars ...sorry

    I have not been able to get shims from Taylor or anywhere else. I think this is bad for Taylor as a company. My guitar was bought used, but since i am willing to pay for them, i don't see the problem. To me this is a scam and i will never buy another Taylor guitar. I have bought plenty of Martin, Gibson, Guild etc... guitars and frankly all of those seem to really care more about their customers. So they make bolt on guitars but if you are not the original buyer, then you are screwed. I have been to a dozen repair centers and none will help me. Now it looks like i will either sell the guitar as danaged or try to make my own shims. Sucks to own a Taylor guitar.

  • @freezerfreezer9097

    Why I like Martins.... Yes, you will more than likely have to reset the neck once in a lifetime by a luthier and it'll cost.. BUT it being glued in place solid everywhere gives you the reward of transmitting all the sound ... not to mention the woods used by Martin are second to none.... Not saying Taylor doesnt have a decent tone but you can see from this repair the bolted in neck.. bolts and unglued shims do nothing for sound...

      You can "see" that the bolts and unglued shims do nothing for sound? Good eye hearing.
      There's myths that a bolt on neck reduces sustain or caused other issues, but that's all they are .. "myths".
      Martins with glued on necks sound great.. Taylors with bolted on necks sound great.. Just preference.
