2017 Cadillac CTS-V 640 hp Road and Track Review - Road America

  • You don't have to be a professional driver to drive real fast and have a blast at a race track. You just need a car like the third generation 2016 Cadillac CTS-V. Oh, and it doesn't hurt when the race track is Road America. NOTE - During the track portion, you'll notice that the middle console lid opens and closes. This is because the track had a 2 way radio system plugged into the middle and it had a fairly thick cable that had to come out. I tried to close it a few times but didn't want to force it and risk damaging their cable.

    This is the golden age of performance. 640 hp Caddies!!! 30k mustangs with 400+hp. Six or seven year old 100k+ cars with over 500hp for under 30k. Amazing

    I had the chance to drive the 2016 CTS-V (and ATS-V) at the Cadillac Vseries Lab at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, TX last week. Prior to the test, I was pretty dead set that this car was no where close to any of the 4 M series BMW's I have owned in the past...how could it even compare to German crafted engineering, right? Well, all I can say, is that I after a full day at the track, I am a changed (and very happy) man. My next car WILL be a CTS-V, no question.
    Auf Wiedersehen BMW.

    I own both a BMW and a Cadillac and as much as I love both cars, the Cadillac is an unacceptably amazing car, its grip, stability, power and most importantly the vibe that the Cadillac gives is one that I personally believe is very hard to out perform, Cadillac is simply a Superb car !

    Cadillac is one of the few companies in the world who have managed to completely rejuvenate their line of cars and improve the quality and performance of every generation of their new line of cars. At this point i want a car that doesn't look like every other car and Cadillac stands out uniquely like a UFO

    New subscriber here. No, you are not a race driver lol. But that is fine, this was a very thorough review. Great car, no doubt about it. I don't know what it is going to take to get snobs to consider Cadillac over BMW or Mercedes, this car is proof GM has done all they can for that. It is way over my price range, but for sure if I won the lottery tomorrow this is the first four door on my list. Good looking, world-class performance and refinement, and American. What more could anyone want?
    Also, kudos to GM for eschewing carbon brakes. Sure, that helps on resale for a BMW or Mercedes, but there is no real-world advantage in performance and if you are a long term owner you don't want to pay to replace those.

      Doug Harlow I have no doubt that ceramics would be better but on this car, most likely overkill. We were doing 3 hot laps at a time and the car might have a 5 min break while switching drivers and the brakes were doing fine. Who knows what would happen in a 20+ lap race but the reality is, who's going to race this car. It'll see the golf course with a bunch of your buddies and the trunk full of clubs before seeing a race track. That being said, I hope everyone that buys one take it to the track at least once to see what the cars capable of.

    • @robfrmny21
      @robfrmny21 9 лет назад +1

      I've seen Porsches get some type of debris in between the ceramic rotor and brake bad and just destroy them. You don't need ceramics for a street car hell stop tech still sells steel rotors.
      Ceramics are noisy Imop when not hot.
      Guess what I am saying somethings are over kill and not needed for a street car.

    Glad you explained that... I was going to say that it reminded me of when the Cadillac Seville was being compared to a Mercedes sedan, and within minutes of being driven over the same road as the Merc, the Caddy's mirrors fell off. Oooops. I own an XLR and wouldn't sell it for anything. But, Cadillac has finally created a four door Vette, and it would be a nice addition. I like your reviews. You are not overly obnoxious and self indulgent. Or Russian. Good job.

    I have an old 2011 CTS-V. it only has 556 HP 550 Torque. but it's so fun. I almost bought a 2016 V3 CTS-V but just could not justify the price vs performance gain. For now I'll stay with my V2. I do love all of the new options in the V3. If I had money to throw at cars I'd get a CT5-V Blackwing. Haha. Enough of my ramblings. Thanks for the video...I want one.

      I rather get the CTS-V than the Blackwing..dont get me wrong it's a beast and it has a manual lol..but this v3 model looks better than the CT5-V it's smaller for a comparison to the m3 competition..interior up to date..but a cheap out than the v3 model..I love the v3 model when u pull up behind a hellkitty or a scat pack..that front facia that monstrous look in their their rearview means business with bone stock..but u can modded up 850-1100 hp lol..Blackwing ♥️ love it..but v3 model I rather have in my opinion.

    Outstanding review ! This new CTS V is a game changer for Cadillac, a true "Super Sports Sedan". Cadillac should make a two door Coupe, ala Elmirage. I'm anxious to see how BMW, Mercedes, and Audi are going to counter!
    I like the improved CUE. People forget that it can be operated via voice recognition. Plus, the new CT6 has a newer model with real buttons. It is only going to get better!
    Great shades you were wearing... may I ask the brand?

    Funny how I see many comparing this to an S Class when it is clearly a E Class competitor. I have a 2009 SL550 and yes the interior is beautiful the power is very good and the shape (the last year it did not look like melted plastic) is to die for. I would love to have this big bad Cadillac in black. Beautiful car!!!

    • @IKhanNot
      @IKhanNot 9 лет назад +3

      skillz1855 Yeah they fudged up so hard with the N63 and S63. From drinking a quart of oil between oil changes, spitting out blue smoke from the tailpipe due to bad CCVs and consumption, timing chain problems, fuel injector problems and carbon buildup problems that supposedly "efficient" engine turned out to be a huge mistake. Shit, I'm quite biased towards German cars but this Caddy and the previous generation CTS V is downright amazing and most importantly it will be reliable. Big old school V8s can take anything thrown at them.

    Has this reviewer ever been in the previous versions, new 6.2 liter engine? first rate interior fit and finish? I am warming to it even though it's more of a rehash of the previous versions. Driving the previous could be a handful to drive it never inspired confidence to go faster, I did anyway but it was alway's at the seat of my pants and I walk the streets of the South Bronx and Bed Sty do or die. I plan to test drive one all the same and am hoping there's a price adjustment so that it's not so close to its German counterparts. I had some Corsa's put on my V and that sounded awesome. Fuel economy, improved, zero to sixty improved, just barely on both and not for nothing the ATS-V seems to be more car for the money. He's doesn't feel comfortable driving it as fast as he can, I wonder why? The brakes are good but the regular seats are just comfy and I wonder if the new ones will creak and squeak like mine did right off the dealer lot. On the track the Michelins are useless after two hot laps and some of the options mentioned were on the Beemer and Benz back in 2010. I'm wondering if the V really can stick it to the Dodge Hell Cat? I do like the computer game graphics in the console. Its not very light and fluffy on the road, its a hard ride and there's very little difference between the drive modes. It didn't inspire courage when I was driving it and it turns out my passengers who've driven with me in many many powerful cars didn't feel to comfortable either I found out later. It was hard to get the car past one hundred and fifty on even the coolest day for some reason the car would bleed speed past one twenty. One Hundred Grand for a Caddy? I'm still on the fence with this one, should I splurge and get the CTS-V or opt for the smaller less powerful but very little difference in the numbers performance wise and get the ATS-V which I'm much more impressed with. I don't want to come off like I'm knocking the CTS-V, I'm just very disappointed there isn't much difference between the one I had and this one not to mention where's the latest innovations, its the same engine just with more BHP, it's not turbo charged, there isn't all wheel drive available and it looks a lot like the old gen with little changes especially the interior. I wanted the this version to be fantastic, inside and out dripping with technology thats practical, I do like the camera's that can record your deviltry but that may get you into trouble if you get into an accident. I've been a Caddy man since the eighties I was one of those young guy's driving his dads car, it all started with the STS, now back then that was a game changer, what a car. I have a couple of years before I decide what I'm going to do when it comes to my next ride so hopefully I'l have a change of heart, wow, a 100 grand for a Caddy, who'd have know. C'mon Cadillac, wow me, theres time and not for nothing the few fella's I know who have the last gen V aren't to impressed with the new one either and its along the same lines Im not. If I still had my V I'd be hard pressed to swap it out for the new one with not even one second quicker to sixty and where am I going to get to get the car to two hundred MPH? anyway you haven't lost me completely.....yet.

    As I've said before, I'll repeat here. The Corvette Z06 and CTS-V were a split investment/partnership. Z06 got an upgraded interior, but got an undersized supercharger in exchange. The LT4 needed to fit under the Cadillac hoodline with the strut brace. This forced engineers to use a smaller displacement blower on the Z06, thus watering that car down for the sake of CTS-V. In addition, this 8spd was a transmission that belongs in every car but a Corvette really. I think they made it as stout as possible, but overall the LT4/8spd is a Cadillac CTS-V drivetrain, far more than it is a Z06. The label Z06 stood for track capable, stiffest chassis...it dates back to the secret RPO by Zora Duntov to put out a race ready Corvette in the 60's. The Z06 is a great car overall, but this compromise with the CTS-V...well...it's a compromise.

      RC000E Yes, at 650/650 the Z06 is SO watered down, what with only running 10.4@132 and all, and beating nearly every production car on every track. The Z06 IS track capable, and it DOES have the stiffest chassis. I really don't know what you're bitching about.

      Well Vernon Price, for many reasons actually. A: I am the current owner of a Z06, and owner of 6 Corvettes over the past 8 yrs. I have road raced for over a decade, so your 1/4 mile validation really doesnt translate to users of the car for track use. Running a car 10 seconds at wide opened throttle versus for 20+ minutes at wide opened throttle requires different levels of excellence. I was at a private premier in Detroit for the C7 Z06, with various engineers and the head of marketing Harlen Charles (email address please, if youd like pictures and validation), so I am not AGAINST this Z06/CTS-V. I am against the use of the RPO Z06 to supplement and share costs with this Cadillac platform. This was formerly a duty of the RPO ZR1. Z06 was always a more track dedicated RPO, lighter, created more for a specific demographic. Frankly, my overall explanation would easily explain my position, which is valid, but is far beyond the scope of this small text back and forth venue. The C7Z is a great car, but they shouldve branded this the ZR1 then released another variation as Z06...thats my complaint. Instead, they will likely release a next level car that may carry zr1 branding...but essentially the pure track slut z06 is gone

      RC000E You misunderstand. I brought up the straight line numbers because you said it was "watered down". Which is obviously complete and total bullshit.
      And yes I picked up on the fact that you are one of those few hardcore Z06 zealots who believe the C5 and C6 Z06es are the only "true" Z06es, and a Z06 should never be supercharged, blah blah blah blah blah. You guys would find something wrong with a cure for cancer.
      The simple fact is that the C7 Z06 is much faster around any track than any C6 Z06. That is an indisputable fact. You calling it "watered down" just makes you look ignorant in the face of the facts.

    • @KnightDriveTV
      @KnightDriveTV 9 лет назад

      Vernon Price I may have missed where I disrespected you, but I suppose the internet is the gateway for people to talk to someone they don't know as if they are uneducated morons. On the contrary, I've been involved with the automotive industry my entire life and was the COO of a company that built turnkey trackday, mid engine cars. So, understand, my opinion is quite valid, both as an owner, enthusiast and as an industry professional. You have a right to disagree, but calling me ignorant or that I spew 'BS' is completely without basis.
      Many people don't look at cars, or successor models in such simplistic terms. Take a 996 Porsche versus a 993 for example...one is far more valuable and desirable than the other. You can dispute why, but the fact is, increased refinement, raw numbers, etc...isn't always the factor which defines a vehicles success. Branding, marketing, and capitalizing long term is more important to the brand, than simply saying "its faster than the prior z06...done."
      I appreciate the C7Z06 for many reasons. I also am factually aware that the budget for the development of C7 was restricted, so they needed to try to fill the brand as efficiently as possible. My ONLY dispute is the use of the RPO. I am the current party responsible for tracking all C7 Z06 track performance data (email if you want provided more data than you have time to read). Simply put, no one is saying the car isn't a performer...of course it is. All that the more "Z06 purists" feel, is that the car was created to fit too broad of a spectrum of users. It's trying to do too many things, so in that it SLIGHTLY missed the mark.
      Compromises we see, are things like the decreased supercharger displacement volume. The likely cause of this was to reduce the overall height of the LT4, so that it could fit under a more cleanly designed CTS-V hood for this incoming generation. This is one of many compromises made to the Z06, to benefit a cadillac. In the end, I understand the financial dynamics...I've worked within operating budgets, I realize there are compromises. In the end though, the facts also support the fact that were excessive budgetary constraints not in existence, we could have felt less compromised. "Watered down" is a strong, and very negative term, but the fact is, there is an argument to be made.
      Respectfully,
      Damian

      RC000E You said the C7 Z06 is "watered down". That MAKES you an uneducated moron. It's like you think my response to you came out of nowhere or something. No, it was proportional to the stupidity contained inside your post.
      You can claim to not be ignorant all you want, but when the C7 Z06 so very clearly outperforms the C6 Z06 and you call it "watered down", that's when you get called an idiot. Watered down compared to what, exactly? Obviously not the C6 Z06.
      Again, I get it. You are a hardcore C5/C6 Z06 enthusiast who believes a Z06 can only be NA, can never weigh more than 3200 lbs, can only be a dedicated track monster, can never even have the OPTION of an automatic because it "ruins the purity" and that kind of unmitigated bullshit etc. And you're wrong.
      "decreased supercharger displacement volume. The likely cause of this was to reduce the overall height of the LT4, so that it could fit under a more cleanly designed CTS-V hood"
      It was because of the height, but it was to fit under the Corvette's hood, not the CTS-V's hood. But there are other factors as well, such as MPG and avoiding the gas guzzler tax, not to mention better response from the s/c. You are blaming the CTS-V for the smaller supercharger, and you are wrong. They developed the LT4 for the Z06, not the CTS-V.
      The CTS-V is a much larger package with more room for an engine, the Gen 2 CTS-V fit a larger S/C under the hood with no issues. The C7 is the car with the engine height constraints, not the CTS-V.
      So no, these were not compromises made to benefit Cadillac. You are looking for a scapegoat, but you picked the wrong one. "Watered down" is also an entirely incorrect term to apply to the Z06, as the evidence clearly shows it's beating many cars all costing anywhere from a bit more to 10 times more money. What compromise are you making, exactly?
      Right. You're not.

    You got a like and a sub from me today, now I am on the prowl for a used second gen ctsv, as far as my research has gone recently, I got my eyes on the 2009... heard that the 2010 has issues with the transmission or some sort. I don't want to buy anything too new but any suggestions of which year to get that is not going to give me problems and have all the goodies the 2nd gen can offer!! And the price it will go for currently, I guess around 30k?
