Hands down Rafale is a better fighter but the limitations are at our end. Firstly, the designers of the INS Vikrant did not have the foresight to include a bigger aircraft lift. They were completely myopic to the fact that in the future the Navy might acquire bigger fighter jets than the Migs. Secondly, our aircraft carriers are STOBAR type whereas the Rafale is designed to operate from nuclear powered aircraft carriers with CATOBAR ability. Its not that they, like the FA18s, cannot operate from STOBAR type aircraft carriers but their potential is limited. However I see that the overall wingspan of the Rafale is about 9 feet less the Super Hornet. Also the Hornet doesn't have a dedicated IRST sensor. It has only a pod based system. So the Main point that will determine the deal, as I see it, is the price per aircraft.

Rafale have better range,equipments, avionics and superior technology But fa 18 hornet have only advantage of fold wings. It is only good if you just want to count numbers, but in terms of technology it cannot outbeat Rafale
I do not like Rafale at all. All those speed and thrust to weight ratios do not consider drag. Once you introduce drag, Rafale will lose in terms of speed and any other advantages it has on F/A 18. All American planes will beat Rafale on things that matter. As an example, if an enemy missile is chasing you then you drop in altitude to increase drag on the missile. American planes with low drag will travel faster than Rafale once you come down. Rafale is not a survivable plane. All that manuverability comes at a cost of increased drag. Drag is more like applying air breaks.

Better to go for Rafael as its a french plane, India has long history of operating french place without any political interference at times. If India buys US plane it will have to seek US permission anytime they want to use it in aggressive operations.
We shud go for Raphael … it will be advantageous to use similar types of aircrafts across our armed forces. Having different types of inventory demands different components and skills.. also America is not reliable, they can anytime step back supplying spare parts or services if they chose to
