    In the first two examples 'break' has been used as an ergative verb and in the 3rd one 'broken' has been used as an adjective.

    How do recognize the verb is also an adjective. In this example as you said, The chair is broken where sentence states the state of being of the chair.
    Here verb break is also act as an adjective.
