  • The Kobelco ED160 blade runner is a multi-task piece of equipment. Now I don't have to load an excavator and dozer on equipment trailer, blade runner does the job of two pieces of equipment in one package.

I operated a ED180 for a few years. The Blade Runner really comes into its own on small sites. The savings are you do not have to buy a separate dozer and transport 2 machines. This is were the Blade Runner shines. Like any multi-tool, Bobcat, Leatherman, Mecalac, SAK they all serve a purpose and you can do a lot of task some take longer some require you to adapt. A lot of times the BR and I would be the only machine on site we quickly had a set of forks made so we could move pallets out of my way while grading. We had buckets, hammer, plate compactor, forks and a truss boom, ripper. This machine does leave wanting at times and you need to work around that. I loved the visibility of the blade as long as you didn't have to worry about the boom. Overall I loved the Blade Runner I think we used it exactly the way Kabelco intended and then some. I regret not buying Mike out when he got cancer and had to close up they were the best 3 years in my career as a operator

Outstanding and practical review! Considering a Bladerunner or a larger machine as my Cat310 is a little light for grubbing larger trees but is great for shear, brush cutting, and light dirt work. Definitely helps when you can get an honest review from a highly experienced operator! Option is to buy a good used dozer…

We now have a cat 306 and a cat 320E as well as a D5 dozer that make a really good team.

@@EssentialMountainHomesteading The Bladerunner is definitely an interesting concept. On the right kind of job it probably would work very well, but as you know, once you purchase one, reality hits home and if you misjudged the benefits and made a bad decision, it can take years to recoup the cost and straighten out your fleet. Definitely a happy new subscriber! I'm clearing trash trees from around my farmland, lots of Ash, Locust, Mullberry, etc. that are about 20 years past due. Certainly is a learning curve to all of this! I may even do some videos one of these days...

I have the older ed150 I love it . Got 10,000 hrs on it vary few problems and the undercarriage is original sloppy now but still strong. Yes price is hi but I cant say a bad thing about it.

Thanks for the honest review. You should share this video with Kobelco in the hopes they will see the value in your opinions and make improvements. I think you need a bigger heavier version of the same machine for what you do. If they made a ED200 with the 6-way blade for your jobs.

For a rental store application I think it'd be a great machine but for a contractor purchase stand point no. If you need a dozer you get a dozer because it's going to be faster and have more power because it's specifically made for that application, if you need an excavator you buy an excavator. My friend has a Cat 320 excavator and it has just over 28,000 hours and the undercarriage has been changed twice and needs it again badly it's constantly throwing its tracks and it's still a great machine other than that. I've found that my Cat equipment lasts longer with fewer problems than my other brands of equipment.

I am looking at an older 90's Blade Runner ED180 with the 4bt. It has the 210 dozer undercarriage. I wonder if the issues you have with this machine are not going to be a problem with the bigger model. I do like the additional power that can be gained from the 4bt.

those track plates are also a death trap if your sitting sideways on a slope, they act like a sled, would still buy one and change the plates, shapes forrest trails very quick.

When looking at machines, try to demo one with a rotor tilt. There are so few in the US that uses them that you have no idea how effective the machine becomes. Here most excavators are so equipped, even up to 30 ton machines.
Dirt Ninja has videos using his in the US.

I’ve always wondered why they didn’t make an 250 version of this. The concept is great but for building forestry roads or large farm roads it’s just too small and too light in the back end for dealing with trees and stumps.

Well, sometimes it's all about finding the right tool for the job. Maybe there's a different machine out there that's better suited for dealing with trees and stumps!

Sorry to hear that you are not overall satisfied with the machine. Like you said, I'm sure it has its place in the field but that place is not the one you are trying to fill right now.

sadly it is like that with a lot of equipment these days, it is like the mfg want to make a million bucks fast, when it should be, sell for less and sell more, getting more out there in front of others that will buy, this has been my thing with wood mizer saw mills, there is nothing in them that can count for the 30, to 80,000 dollars they price them at, all and all not one of them has over @500 dollars in steel or hardware in them, even the gas engine is only good for tops 1500 hours and they are done,, my 22hp lawn tractor engine was in need of a rebuild at 1200 hours, but it was cheaper to buy a new engine then the parts to rebuild it my self, the price they want for a lot of equipment, the real values is know were close to there price, same with cars and trucks, they want the price of buying a nice home, that will last you a life time, but that truck or car, will be rusted out in 5 years, and the engine done by 100,000 miles if not less with a lot of brands

I think you just power greedy! Look the size of the trees you are handling with that little bitty 160!
Compare apples to apples - not apples to cucumbers!
