That is the best design for a Helicopter I have ever seen. So very stable and no tail rotor concerns. Refit that thing with a couple of Jet Turbine engines would be even better.
They actually did it. Google Ka-226, the grandson of this heli. :) Basically the same concept, but with 2 turbines and slightly bigger because of increased power.
Serious question: can anybody put their finger on what exactly makes our brains go "yeah that shit is soviet" as soon as we see something like this? One quick glance at this thing and my brain was screaming "Russian".
I'm gonna say the shapes are quite reminiscent of the other russian/soviet helicopters that are quite popular. Also, it looks super ghetto, which adds up to that idea of soviet things being very simple and hacked together.
I love Kamov. Granted the closest I have ever been to one is flying the KA-50 in DCS Black Shark but hey all the buttons work as they should. LOVE the look of this one. It's workhorse but still looks amazing. Sort of the P-38 of the helicopter world.
I remember teaching the ATPL-H syllabus in airframes and powerplants. Students always wondered why multi-engine piston systems had to be covered. This was the best I could come up with :)
Whenever you have to cover some edge case in aviation it's almost always "Because Russia did it once in the '60s and several of those airframes are still around"
Compared to the tubs of crap Bell 47 G’s we used to spray with at Ag Rotors in the 70’s that thing is a beast. I can hear the rotor droop on the turns. Has to be a blast!

My favorite helicopter, seems like the counter rotating main rotors would be extremely complex and a maintenance nightmare but I suppose a directional tail rotor with long drive shaft and gear boxes is complex also.
Think it's one of the coolest helicopters/flying tractors , especially Cold start, (sound) . Judging by the ones I've seen they need/get less maintenance than most tractors too. ;-)
Awesome video! Would you be okay with me featuring parts of it in my series Weekly Dose of Aviation? Of course you will be credited both in the video and in the description.
Is nobody going to comment on this guy's skills? He's flying low and fast, then reversing his direction like nothing? How the tiny helicopter holds his balls I don't know.

It is an amazing concept. It is impossible to suffer tail rotor effectiveness failure.
The little fan in the cockpit seems to help with aircraft performance quite a bit!!
