In the first episode of Dev Doodles, devs recount some of the challenges they faced while creating Sylas, a champion who steals ultimates from other champions.

Here's a champion that only has QWR, and he has 5 guns. Oh, and he has 5 Qs btw.
And also his R can trigger one of the 5 passives from the 5 guns
Who
all those guns, and all u have to do is auto-atack to be a good aphelios

I feel like aphelios is a reminder that Riot likes anime. First with Kayn the edgy antihero, then Aphelios with the imuoto hyjinx, and now -Sett- DIO
New champ idea:
Q - Skill shot
W - Utility buff
E - Mobility spell
R - Opens another game
Ill one trick this champion

You don’t have to give a different character the same abilities. He just becomes the character. And his ult is him just transforming back.

You know, this whole "we don't want to check sylas for every champ" thing is really funny in hindsight, you know with the sett bug that locked players positions onto another character model.
Was probably more of an underlying flaw of the way Sett's R was implemented not because of Sylas.

Honestly i thought about how transformation ults would work, and how an ult just upgrades other abilities, how would riven's ult work on sylas? Etc

I think it was a good oppurtunity for them to remove a lot of technical debt from the past, by uncoupling the way the abilities of old champions work. props for the tech team :)

Incredible. As a programmer every time i play with sylas i think "What the **** is this broken cha..." Ohh... I mean "What an incredible architecture must lie behind this"
It's hard to do such tasks, I can't fathom how many technical issues they have been getting for this crazy idea. Nevertheless, bugs are still bugs in a competitive game, those need to be addressed no matter how difficult it might be.

I really hope those "new ideas" that they can work on now arent just a bunch of new mobility abilities. Rito still hasn't seemed to notice the huge correlation between how many dashes a champion has and how un-fun they are to play against...

Sylas W nearly offers more than their whole kits lol. TF and Rammus have insanely simple kits to compensate for the Point and click hard cc. Now lets look at sylas
like the only reliable squad is the drawing squad at riot games... literaly noone cares what the comunity thinks besides them

I don’t think so, many of the developer asks for feed back on forum and posts. As someone who follows their social media process, it’s kinda awesome to see some of the feedback making it into the game. A good example would be the new walks went through many fans feedback and iteration before they upload it.

The real problem was the way they make all the characters in LoL, things like Fiora's ult, have a lot of sense when you are a programmer, is more easy says and make work something like " Create 4 spots around and enemy, and give to then a box wich inteactuacs with her passive "
as a learning developer, sylas has intrigued me so much in game since its so obvious how many challenges there would be. Congrats guys on making it work!

Great vid! When I first saw Sylas I was extremely because of the scope when him having 100+ ultimates but you guys have done well implementing. He is definitely a good encouragement to extensibility and modular systems for any young devs out there

So what you're saying is, this champion had been *_chained_* next to every back burner idea that probably never went into development because it was likely going to take alot of work to redo everything.
And possibly because of all the work that went into Sylas' creation, you may be able to _unchain_ other ideas that may now be possible?

Next step is to have an Ability Draft-like game mode.
For those who are unfamiliar with this concept, you basically can pick champion (or are granted a random one) and are given the option from a set of non-ultimate skills and another pool of ultimates. Then, you can select three from the non-ultimate pool and one from the ultimate pool, ultimately building your own champion.
About the passive, if it goes along with the champion you're playing or if you'd be given another pool just for passives is up to discussion, and some skills/passives would certainly need to be unavailable or nerfed, but this could work.
I really think this would further improve the way the game designers and engineers think about developing new stuff so they're less hardcoded, and it'd also be an amazing experience for players, possibly being less repetitive than any other rotating game mode we've been presented so far, since the amount of possible champion/build combinations would be so high.

So much effort in one champ to nerf him into the ground so nobody would play him, what a shame. Good thing they decided to at least make an attempt in bringing him back. Have they succeeded? Guess we'll find out soon...
