- Week 13 of a series I'm doing called "52 Licks." 1 new jazz phrase each week for 2013.
He's Baaaaack... Brian Blade. Like Jeff "Tain" Watts, Brian is another great example of how to modernize some traditional jazz vocabulary. Here's a 5 note phrase he played on a live cut of Joshua Redman's "Jazz Crimes."
If you haven't watched this very popular jazz drumming RUclips clip, you're in for a treat. It's incredible. I took this phrase from around 0:18.
here's the clip: • Brian Blade - Solo
I also demonstrate an extension of that phrase, using some of the characteristics of it, but making it a 7 note phrase.
Here's a PDF of both phrases written as one bar phrases (loop them as long as you want of course): www.mediafire.c...
Enjoy!

Awesome videos sir! I actually was noodling around with pairing this lick at the end of the "Brian Blade Lick" you posted earlier in the year. Since "Brian Blade Lick" ends with the left hand, its an easy segue into this lick. Thank you for the videos!
That's so true! This is elvins signature licks! I know this because I transcribed Elvin's Black Nile solo. If you listen to that track you can hear it at half of the form.
Fantastic series...Thanks and well done!!!
Yeah it is. Love this whole thing. It's addicting to watch over and over again.
1 - I am looking for easy to implement phrases that can be expanded
2 - I wanted something that was a slight variation of the typical bebop stuff i had been doing at that time.
Hope this helps explain it.
How cool and so simple!😎
Cool I enjoyed working on this! Thank's for the lesson!
Glad to hear it!
very cool!...i think Elvin used to play something similar too..go ahead! Brian's welcome!:)
i appreciate you so much man.
great videos, but one thing is missing i think. U should add music contects at the and video. ex 3 bars walk and in 4th bar crazy lick which end at one.
yes this is bebop lick, Jimmy Cobb plays it all the time.
❤👍🏾💥
That whole solo is killer, how did you decide to pick this part of it though?
