- On Wednesday, 29 May 2024, South Africans came together to practice their democratic right and vote in the seventh democratic election since 1994. The results are in, and for the first time since the 1994 elections, the ANC did not win an outright majority (over 50%) to govern the country. Breakfast with Martin Bester spoke to Dr Harlan Cloete, a political analyst and research fellow at the University of Free State, to help us better understand this outcome.

South Africa is a pluralistic society and it now has a more pluralistic democracy to match. This will cause a brief period of instability as parties learn that they need to work together, but once that period is over South Africa will be stronger for it. Even the ANC will be stronger for it because eventually it will learn that it must work for its support and listen to people, no party can take anyone for granted any more.
Sadly, Our politicians are not intellectual and mature enough to hold collisions together to enable the coalition to work.
The biggest stumbling block is putting egos aside.
As Dawie Roodt explained, we are in for a very rocky five years.
The people have spoken and that is what matters most.

A govt of cooperation between the ANC and DA is the only workable solution for stability. Lets see if we need to go and buy crash helmets.

They are also only for one race of people. We need white and black to unite and move forward. Not 10 step backwards. Unless you are racist and only for black people EFF is the way to go. But if people genuinely want it to work. There is only one way and that to unite white/black people without any apartheid fears. We move together. Take economy to high levels so all people have housing, food and basic necassities. Also work. If this does not happen we will be worse of. I don't believe in MK or EFF to do that. I have more hope for a ANC/DA/PA/IFP colation so we cater for all races.

This kind of coalition didn't work after 1994 because of egos and immaturity of the politicians. Let's hope that after 30 yrs there's some maturity and putting the country first. And that goes for all voters, as well.
There had been a lot of goodwill in 1994 from the people who wanted the "new" SA to succeed and it could have succeeded BUT for the politicians.
