Enjoying this actual play. Great role playing that feels like the podcast. I love the cypher system. As a rules point. Easing and hindering affect the base difficulty number by one, not the multiplied number. So does effort. So, a difficulty of 3 (9), hindered by one would become a difficulty of 4 (12). When she used effort, the difficulty would be eased by one back to 3 (9). The intellect effort costs three points, minus one for her intellect edge. So, her final difficulty would have been 3 (9) for a cost of two intellect points. If she had offered a piece of jewelry, it would have acted as an asset, easing the difficulty by one to 2 (6). If she was trained in a social skill, that trained skill would further ease the difficulty to 1 (3).

I'm glad someone made the comment. :) I also love the cypher system (this is the system I've been mostly using for the past ~3 years). Another thing: unless they altered the rules in the OGoA rulebook, refreshing your dice pools should be (1) an action (~5-6 seconds), (2) 10 minutes, (3) 1 hour, (4) 10 hours (basically a long rest). I forgot to add: great job all around! :) I think this story is starting really well, and I can't wait to see where it goes.
im so excited for the next episode!!! the players really made these characters feel real and distinct right off the bat and im already hooked on each of their story arcs.
"Make it good, just like you made it for Billy." Ha! Oh lord. Lol. This was a top tier exchange; I love that things didn't immediately get toxic after the bad roll; there's tension, and she offers him cornbread! Whoops. Perfect way to show how sour he is... Too real.
I have been thinking about listening to the podcast for quite some time but never gotten around to it. dork tales + old gods was the secret sauce i needed it seems
I just started my own Old Gods TTRPG campaign (and my very first time GMing!) so I sought out some info about it and discovered this series! What a great set up to get players and characters immediately invested in each other, and a really great premise! I'm taking notes from this to integrate into my own game/GMing. Thank you so much for sharing your story!
Awesome! Welcome to the GM chair! I hope your game goes well. There's so much to do with the setting and I'm sure that you are going to have a blast. Sorry about a few rules mistakes in this episode--it was my first time with the system.
Ive never listened to Dork Tales before but I really enjoyed this. It made me feel like I had stumbled on a lost episode of Old Gods! Whats the release schedule for this game? When can we expect ep 2?
We're squeezing this one in amongst the rest of our filming schedule so it may be a touch sporadic, but episode 2 is out now and we're trying to find a date to film episode 3!
I want you to know that this is my first time watching a TTRPG from start to finish. I was so gripped by this cast of characters and the way scenes were set. You all worked so well together. 😊 I received my core book from the Old Gods Kickstarter recently, and I was intrigued to see people having a go at role-playing in the universe. I’m so glad a friend sent me the link to this video as it felt like I was watching an episode of the podcast! Looking very much forward to watching episode 2. And as a Brit, we tend to have a soft spot for these kind of southerny US accents. 😊
I hope so too! And thanks, I really appreciate it. Build Mama a Coffin is actually one of the few arcs I haven't listened to, but I think I might give it a try after we wrap this show
Fantastic! I love how this group has really absorbed the setting and essence of the game! One thing that sort of threw me off though…. I’ve read the book, so I may not be accurate here, but when it comes to “easing”, or “hindering” a task, I thought that the difficulty itself was affected?? So if the difficulty is 3 (need a 9 for success) and effort is used, I thought it eased the difficulty rather than the target number needed on the D20. So in this case, easing the difficulty of 3 by one step (effort) would make the difficulty a 2 (then needing a 6). I could have sworn that was what I read, but maybe I am wrong? Anyhow, I love this group so far and the GM is excellent!!! So excited for the next one!
Tip: It's customary in Cypher to introduce your character like so: "I'm playing Rufus T. Boggs, a Shifty Speaker who Gets Rough And Rowdy" Then follow up with additional info as needed. Looking forward to viewing the rest of this episode soon. 😄
In between a DM who is (IMO) one of the best in the business at setting a scene and a cast that really gets into the moment, this is awesome.
You made me blush super hard, sir.

I'm listening to this while working and have to stop and look to see if Steve is DMing.
That is one of the best complements I could receive. Thank you, family.
New to the channel loving this game your players are amazing. And the GM really gets the feel for the original podcast.
Thanks! I really love the podcast so I'm glad that I'm hitting the right notes.

I have been waiting for this episode! Awesome work by everyone.
I loved that! Isn't family so much fun.

When will this be back on? It was really great to see something longer than a one-shot
Episode 2 is up on our patreon right now and will be in public release soon! It's quite a doozy.

I live in Virginia about an hour away from West Virginia. They all did pretty good with the accent but kept saying you all instead of yall
Thanks! And doh. This is what I get for growing up in Missouri.
I keep getting a Build Mama a Coffin vibe from this. Hopefully it turns out better than that story’s ending

Whee! I am so hyped for this campaign! I ship Flora and Miriam!
I love shipping!

I think some mistakes were made with the mechanics... every raise or lowering of the difficulty raises or lowers a whole level, not the actual #
Yep! Totally my mistake. I address this in episode two. It's a learning experience.
