Let’s be honest. There just isn’t anyone in the wnba as marketable as Caitlin, and it has nothing to do with race. Michael Jordan is the most marketable human being ever, and he was a black man. MJ was the COMPLETE PACKAGE. He had the game, he had the swag, he had the charisma, he had it all. Clark is in a similar spot because she is such an anomaly with her shooting ability, and she’s coming around right after the prime of Steph curry. It was perfect timing. Though Steph’s prime still may be going on, you get the point. If some black girl came along with a kind personality, Clark’s shooting ability, was a Christian, and had charisma, she would be JUST AS MARKETABLE. This country is so jealous, and hateful, it makes me sick. CARRY ON PEOPLE

What personality? Everyone in this comment thread says she doesn’t say anything and everyone else defending her on that. She has no personality. She is as boring as a stalk of corn, but she can shoot. Paige B has personality. Cameron Brink has personality. The problem is, you guys think she does absolutely no wrong. She can’t be wrong, she is the greatest player, the best and she just simply isn’t. I mean, come on with this shit. Personality. The reason why this is so big is because she is white and appears to play a certain way. It’s the same thing when Tiger came along. No one had ever seen a black guy play golf with the fist pumps and pounding the ball everywhere. It was the same way with Venus and Serena. Their talent was on full display, but because they were black, it added to it. No one wants to admit it CC, but there is more intrigue because this bland looking white girl can play like Steph Curry.

In my opinion. I started to give attention to WNBA because of her attitude, respect, the game that she plays like Stephen Curry, my favorite player. NOT because of race. Can we just stop pinning everything on race? It's making me and others just not wanting to support what could've turned the WNBA around. Instead of being grateful to be playing a game that they live and earn money, WNBA tends to just whine and complain. Men do not like whiners and complainers, just entertain us with a good game of ball~

ESPN sportscasters, the old ladies of a show and woke people on social media have all been hating on CC, belittling her abilities, the girl was even physically attacked on court without the refs calling a foul and her teammates also don't pass her the ball. The reason people watch the WNBA and continually grow a fanbase worldwide is because of CC. She's famous here in Singapore sports bars played her NCAA games and we fans followed her to the WNBA. If I’m CC’s management I’m having her be even more vocal against ALL scum - while still being a straight Christian and not becoming a marketing shill for LGBT etc when she simply wants to ball. Question though: is this all possible? ONLY A MATTER OF TIME before men (the real fans) move on- we support women but WE CAN’T BE FOOLED- boys HS JV IS BETTER & MORE EXCITING! BE GRATEFUL WE’RE WATCHING IN BETTER OUR NBA & NFL! We’re partially watching for attractive, athletic women with SUSTAINED SUPPORT. Like women’s volleyball, swimming/diving, T&F. How can you market this game when they play like prison basketball. The day when a girl can Air like Jordan, playmaking like Magic Johnson or can shoot from anywhere like Bird. @@DavidUSA2525 All of these resentful WNBA players fail to realize CC's stardom elevates their stardom in the league, if they had the sense to play it right.
This is foolery. If you look at the NBA, black stars not only are the most popular in the league, but transcended the league from national to international fame. If you look at my previous comment on this thread, many of USA's major sports have black stars as the face of the game, even when they no longer play.
If these people got past their jealousy and resentment and celebrated that people are interested in women's basketball, they'd ride the wave of CC's success and enjoy success themselves. More eyes on the WNBA will bring more financial success to the entire league, which of course means more financial success for the players in it (another errant gripe some of the players in that league like to bring up... the supposed pay gap).
It's amazing that we live in a generation where rather than seeing opportunity for our own elevation in someone else's success, we look for every opportunity to bring up past ills. And we so blatantly ignore the success black athletes across several sports have enjoyed, and what they mean to the game of all those sports. Let CC play ball. Her success in the league only brings more eyes to the stars already in that league.
Or are we prepared to say that major league lacrosse and other professional leagues don't have the fame they deserve for contrived reasons that fit our worldviews rather than looking at the obvious (we just don't really care all that much about professional lacrosse in this country at this point in our history...)?

What this is showing is that the WNBA is Full of the same prejudice as any other league, black or white, with lesser stats. Smith has supported Clark, so this is not about him. WNBA is a horrible product. Clark has brought excitement to the game because of her talent. Her skin color means nothing, as Larry Bird and MJohnson did in the 80s, when the NBA was a horrible product, and MJordan did in the 90s. Anything outside of this logic is near-sightedness. But if her race were the only, or even the biggest reason for her success, this popularity explosion would have happened in the W years ago. The sell-outs and viewership would have accompanied Taurasi, or Ionescu, or Plum.
The biggest reason Clark is so popular is her style of play - her limitless range, her exceptional vision, and her Houdiniesque passing. It's new, and it's impossible for anyone, especially condescending dudes, to write it off as a result of her competition just being smaller or weaker (not that this was fair to women before, but her style of play is built to drive home how ridiculous that condescension is).
She changes the entire flow and aesthetic of the game. Offensive gameplans feature her unprecedented arsenal as both a scorer and distributer, defenses have to change up their entire team strategy when she's on the floor (box-and-1 all season last year). It's paradigm shifting, like Michael Jordan was, like how Steph Curry was. It looks magical, it gets peoples' attention and keeps it.
But Caitlin Clark shouldn't be an avatar for social injustices that extend far beyond women's basketball, and that are not within her ability to control. Indeed, she has done everything you could reasonably expect of her to highlight stars who paved the way, and to recognize former greatness. She has supported both her teammates and her rivals when they've faced awful comments from the seemingly infinite supply of sadists, sexists, and racists who lurk within the margins of society.!

And there are plenty of white NBA players who were popular. Larry Bird, Pistol Pete, but no one asked them to do something to end racism. I agree Michael Jordan was asked to speak out and he didn't speak out as much as he could have. And I also think times are different now, and more is expected.

@3:28. I disagree with Stephen A. He stated that the resentment, jealousy and envy around Clark’s popularity is justified. If someone has those negative emotions toward an individual that has only been gracious to them, it’s a sign of insecurity. I definitely wouldn’t say those emotions are justified. Clark has a rare combination of likability and talent. The WNBA community should be excited to have more eyes on their product. Justifying and, as a result, encouraging negative emotions doesn’t make anyone better. And envy is a strong word. It suggests that you want to what the other person has. Needless to say, everything is not for everybody.
