This movie was made before CGI and special effects so, yes, I've always loved how they made no attempt to hide the fact that the ROUS was just a man in a rat costume.
It also helps that everything we see is supposed to be from the mind of a child imagining what everything looks like while the story is being read to him. Hence how we ended up with quicksand that is instant, royalty all wearing absurdly oversized crowns, a person sitting down to shake pebbles out of their boot and some of them being nearly the size of your fist, etc... It isn't just a fantasy movie, it is fantasy exaggerated to silly proportions
During the filming of the Cliffs of Insanity scene, when the were winched up an artificial cliff (the scene was a composite of this, real cliffs with dummy figures and models) Wallace Shawn, who played Vizzini was really worried because he was scared of heights and he thought he might ruin the film. As the started being winched Andre the Giant could tell that something was wrong. He looked down at Shawn, stroked his head and said “Don’t worry, I’ll look after you, I’ll look after you.” From that moment on Wallace Shawn was fine and they completed the day’s filming without incident.
If you like this, you should watch Willow, another great action/adventure/fantasy, as well as The Goonies, which is another 80's classic not to be missed.
In real life Andre The Giant would not be able to lift his own body one inch off the ground. Serena Williams said she can't do a single pull up. The strongest guy in the world can only do a handful of pull ups. When you have a lot of body weight it's hard to lift off the ground.
Andre in particular was in terrible pain during the filming of this movie. As Cary Elwes (Wesley) recalls, "He was dealing with pain from a back operation from all the punishment he took in the ring." Andre's pain was so intense that he couldn't even do many of the stunts. "He told me that because he was a giant, in the ring wrestlers felt that they didn't have to hold back and would smash chairs on his neck and things like that," Elwes remembered. He also suffered from acromegaly, a hormonal disorder that develops when your pituitary gland produces too much growth hormone during adulthood: He had constantly increasing bone mass in the bones of his hands, feet and face, causing debilitating health issues. On the scene with Wesley on his back, Elwes had to be completely supported by cables, Andre's back couldn't take the slightest amount of weight. He endured with grace and smiles, and had a heart as big as he was. RIP Andre.
4:00 It's the fairly standard quasi-medieval 'fantasy' setting. 5:05 The little guy is Wallace Shawn, he has been in many things where they needed a small actor. The giant was a former wrestler called Andre the Giant. sadly his Gigantism lead to health problems, at is often does, and he died at age 46. 5:40 They just told you their plan, they are going to kill her and leave her body on the border so the two countries go to war.
If you were not talking over the dialogue you would’ve heard the little man saying that they’re going to kill her in order to implicate the enemy kingdom and start a war- he was paid to start a war.
Cary elwes broke his big toe between takes when the count hit him on the head he really was unconscious and had to be rushed to the hospital the castle is a real castle in Derbyshire filmed inside and out
@@Lirtzie Ok thanks for letting me know, would you consider reacting to Dennis the menace (1993) if you do , make sure you watch the end credits scene, some people can miss that out if you don’t watch it all the way through, thank you for the reply!
Happy Valentine's Day, Lirtzie!!!♥♥♥♥The big guy is "Andre the Giant". He was a famous wrestler. Nice to see you doing another film reaction. This is an excellent choice for Feb. 14th! This enjoyable fairytale appeals to a vast audience! Great reactions to The Princess Bride, Flirtzie!!!🎬👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Happy Valentines Mike 🌹 Ah I have probably seen him in other shows/movies, that's why I recognised him! Thank you so much Mike!! I have another movie reaction that will be out soon ✨
This movie is for everyone boys and girls it is such a great movie. This movie is based on a book. The writer of the book also wrote the script of the movie . The scene with Westley and the six finger man when the six finger man hit him in the head was real and the actor who plays Wesley had to go to the hospital. here was real spark between the main actors in real life Westley and Buttercup that's why it works. Andre the giant used his big hands to protect Robin Wright (Buttercup ) head when she was cold on the set. You should also see Wilow, Lady Hawk, The Never Ending Story and The Labyrinth 1986. This is one of the movies with an epic soundtrack like Conan The Barbarian or Highlander which you should also see. one of my favorite quotes from this movie "“We are men of action, lies do not become us.”"
Thank you for this one Lirtz! A true classic from my childhood, glad you liked it!😊Another one you could watch, if you haven’t already, is ”The neverending story”. One of my favorites as a kid!
I know this movie backwards and foward. Scandi dubs are entertaining. I understand about 60% of the words. (Norsk, Swede & Dane). And pick up new words while watching.
This film is a delight in every way and I love it uncritically. Yes, parts of it are a bit cheesy but for those of us who grew up watching it, that's just part of its charm. The rat costumes were not... brilliant. Eh, it's a choice. Inigo and Westley were clearly fighting on a sound stage rather than the ruins of some ancient castle. I'm OK with that. Director Rob Reiner clearly enjoyed and respected the fantasy-romance-adventure genre and that's how he was able to have fun with it so successfully without mocking it. Right across the board, the cast is excellent but I want to give special thanks to Billy Crystal as Max and Carol Kane as Valerie. They only have a few moments of screen time but they are simply magical. Thank you for sharing this with us and I look forward to your next upload.
This whole production, from sets to costumes, almost feels like it was meant to be presented as a stage production rather than film: It doesn't pretend to be super-realistic, which is absolutely part of its charm. I love it!
Glad you like the relationship The Man in Black and Inigo have, especially the "sword-gasm" each one of them has. 😉😛 Now, as far as you identifying The Man in Black as Westley, you're able to do so because you're WATCHING THE VISUAL DEPICTION OF A BOOK; anybody hearing the story read to them will have only their imagination to conjure up "who's who."
I remember seeing this movie in the theater when it came out with about 20 friends, and it's one of my happiest memories, ever. It's timeless and wonderful, and every time it shows up I drop everything to watch it.
Didnt know valentine's day is a thing overseas. I hope you and yours enjoyed it. May I request your reaction to The Green Mile, Fried Green Tomatoes, and Train to Busan
Inigo gave the 6 finger man a blow for every wound he took before. Not just the cheek scars He even stabs him in the left chest and right bicep, after he was stabbed there after being hit with the dagger. And his finishing blow was where the dagger hit.
Billy Crystal...all his movies are great! He told THE best story once...being in a restaurant, sitting at a table. He gets his food, starts eating. A guy at the next table says to him," u know this food is great, but u know what would be better? When they cut the meat really Leeeean, it's nice and leeeean!" So funny!!
Holy cow. I watch this movie & reactions constantly. In the book, which I finally read this year, they always mention a tally on the most beautiful women in the country. Buttercup moved up as she aged. Am I the only one who thinks this reactor is incredibly beautiful? Also yes it was a man in a rat suit. The midget who plays it was locked up for drunk in public the night b4. They had to go find him & bail him out for the scene. 😂
It WAS cheesy - but that was deliberate and part of the comedy. The cinematography was also superb: the director really knew his job. Cary Elwes (Westley) wrote a book (called "As You Wish") on the making of the movie. Its an excellent read. When Count Rugen (actor Christopher Guest - a REAL English aristocrat!) hit Westley with his sword hilt, he was originally not convincing because he didn't want to hurt Cary Elwes. They had to re shoot the scene and Cary told him to actually hit him. He accidentally did it too hard and knocked him out for real. That was the take they used. When Cary slumped unconscious after the hit, he wasn't acting!
Pretending no one on 95 comments mentioned this before, Mandy Patinkin's father died from Pancreatic Cancer when he was eighteen years old, to give Inigo more emotional depth he imagined Count Rugan/the Six Fingered Man as the cancer that killed his father.
Also, Andre the Giant/Fezzik couldn't actually catch and hold Robin, who played Buttercup, because he suffered from severe back problems from lifting his own weight and injuries from wrestling, so, she had to be supported by a harness and cables when she dropped into his arms.
Great reaction. My favorite movie of all time. And that last "As you wish." still gets me to tear up a bit.
This movie was made before CGI and special effects so, yes, I've always loved how they made no attempt to hide the fact that the ROUS was just a man in a rat costume.
CGI existed (Tron was 1982), but but it cost a lot. You're still right though. Even the worst practical has more character.
@@hackerx7329 That's a great comment! It's grandpa reading the book but we are seeing the adventure through the Grandson's eyes.
The rat was deliberately hokey. And special effects existed long before 1987.
I always felt that the scene where the grandfather reassures that Buttercup wasn't eaten by the eels, was a genuine fourth wall break
During the filming of the Cliffs of Insanity scene, when the were winched up an artificial cliff (the scene was a composite of this, real cliffs with dummy figures and models) Wallace Shawn, who played Vizzini was really worried because he was scared of heights and he thought he might ruin the film. Great reaction, Lirtz!
Fun fact: The actor who plays Wesley is Cary Elwes, who played Dr. Gordon in SAW.
Thank you Slade!! What?! I didn't notice that 😮 😮
Cary Elwes actually got knocked out (six fingered man with the sword hilt) and had to go to the hospital.
Whoa really?! Hope he didn't get any serious injuries!
I could never fall asleep, when someone read a story to me.
I would!! It can be so relaxing and it ends up you falling asleep 😴
@@Lirtzie I would be too excited to find out what's going to happen next.

Happy Valentines Henry ✨
7:46 Haha... well more than double that. Andre the Giant weighed 230+ kg.
Weeelll, that was way more than I said lol!!
But, he wore the weight well at 223cm tall. 😉
Yes, you are correct about "Predator". It was shot mostly in Mexico on location. Both Arnold, and director John McTeirnan lost 25 pounds each there.
25 pounds?! Yeah it is always positive and negative things with shooting a movie on spot and not for sure!
Indigo was on Chicago Hope, The Doctor/Patient, criminal minds!
This has been a favorite movie of mine, since it first hit theaters. I just got the novel, and plan to start it early next week.
3:57 It reminds me of "Robin Hood: Men in Tights". Especially, the lead actor!
Loved your review. Thank you!

A Tiesto mix was pulled from this film. . .
Actually Andre weighed upwards of 225 kilos
18:52 Can you imagine how coarse and irritating that must be?
30:49 He is, after all, a man.
Omg yes, I don't even wanna think about it!
Lol, well.... 😆
Andre the Giant was 240kg 😉
Andre weighed 226 kilos.
When Westley said "As you wish", he meant "I love you". Notice the grandfather said "As you wish", to his grandson, to close the film.
Because the story isn’t really about buttercup and farm boy It’s about the love of a grandfather fir his grandson. That’s the real story hidden. .
If you liked this, try
"Ladyhawke" (1985)
"Milk Money" (1994)
"Galavant" (2015) 2 seasons, 18 episodes total.
Ladyhawke! That's a winner!
I second Ladyhawke!
