Not gonna lie, my grandfather and then father both expressed this method as a way of telling dogs apart, the purer the breed he said the less likely they are to cry out. It was interesting to see the video unfold. Excellent content as always! And one more unique observation, Putin is holding the dogs back paw with his left hand. Almost certainly to avoid the dog slipping out of his arm but also because short of doing so, he would have to squeeze the dog harder to the point of probably hurting the puppy. It's impossible to hold a heavy dog with one arm without squeezing hard on the rib cage. He's being so very gentle with the animal.
Yes, like the other commentators said, this is how female dog, cat, leopard, tiger, lions carry their young around. The "pups" will usually remain calm and quiet so that to avoid detection during the move. Too bad, human baby does not have loose skin on the neck, otherwise Duchess of Cambridge could have controlled Prince Louis easily during the recent incident in UK.
This is a fabulous video. I have always wondered why the puppy was held like that and your explanation was amazing. Keep making these videos Phil!! They're so cool!! 🐕🐕🐕
you've really never seen a dog handled like that? I can understand not liking it, as i don't do it, but its extremely common and its called scruffing. puppies and kittens have scruffs to be carried safely by their mother, and when they are carried they have a hypnosis response so they don't wiggle around. Though I should point out that you shouldn't be doing this to a puppy of that weight, around 8 weeks for large breeds is about when it will start to hurt them. also while you shouldn't pick up an adult cat like this, pinching their scruff can still trigger that hypnosis response and calm them down, not sure if this works with adult dogs though.
Their internet is hyper-restricted. I worked in the Republic of Georgia as a teacher in an American School and our company had a location in Ashgabat. We had professional development with teachers who lived there and they were so happy to be in an unrestricted environment. Even a VPN didn't do much because the internet there was so poor.
You have such a knack for finding interesting facets of culture in the odd intricacies of human interaction. This is another unique video in my firehose of RUclips suggestions!
Great video, Phil. Cultural context does matter in both foreign relations and in its media coverage. Of course, having a head of state doing such act and the reaction will be as expected (LOL WUT?), most fitting for clickbait but as you said what he did was a symbolic gesture of a strong geopolitical (and economic) alliance.
Great point. Just to add: although at a certain point scruffing them that way due to its weight and age isn't ideal and would only be uncomfortable for the pup. The puppy doesn't look like it was born yesterday but a bit on the "hefty n happy" side..I couldn't see its momma carrying it in her mouth, but the pup following by her side as it's a bit grown up (as u can see in the video).
i saw something recently it was about pointing out flaws in dictators and why calling them mad excuses them for their actions as we refuse to believe they are human well they are human and know exactly what they are doing so dont excuse them by saying its a mental illness they cant control instead hold them accountable for their actions
Alabai is one of the great dogs in the Earth: strong, brave, independent, and very smart. If you have some big area of land you want to defend Alabai is number 1.
Lifting a puppy by the scruff of his neck is definitely one way of determining its demeanor.... Mother dogs lift their pups this way which makes the pup freeze motionless allowing her to, for instance, move the pup to a safer location without a struggle... ❤😊

He cares more about the well-being of a puppy than actual human lives in Ukraine and even his own people whose lives he’s using for his political games.
It’s SO much creepier now that we know why he holds the dog like that. Straight out of Animal Farm. The puppy that complains or asks for help is not loyal, not fit to be called an Alibi, and thus worthless. You can imagine what they do with such puppies.

my grandma and everyone from my family in Europe picks up puppies like that. It's a perfectly fine way to pick up your pup and if you use google it you'll see that so many do it without, and nobody is testing the dog its just a easy way to pick up a puppy. Pretty sure farmers even in the US hold dogs like that. You might just be reading slightly way too much into this.

During the whole video I was wondering about the puppy: how's he doing, what about him...Wasn't really following Putin's private life but this dog wasn't played up that much either
Yea, I'm also curious what happened to the dog. He'll be around 5 or 6 by now. I hope the dog wasn't just shipped off somewhere shortly after the photoshoot and he's having a nice life and gets plenty of love and exercise.
I remember this because I watched it like 3 years ago and as I didn't knew much about Putin at the time, I thought of him as a likeable person and was confused why everyone was so surprised he rescued the puppy. 3 years later, he went out of his way to prove me wrong. The comments were right. I stand corrected.
Damn that's a good video Phil. You just don't know for sure if you're going to get gold until you start digging. Mostly when I think of Turkmenistan I think of it as one of the "totalitarian three", along with North Korea and Eritrea it is the most authoritarian country in the world.
Bruh you are so funny same with this guys... many animals pick up their little one by the neck also does... but a human cant justify it because of our hands and fingers... but when they dont have those or cant use them like us they use and you didnt geus it their mouth and teeth...
Actually, the only question I have now, after this excellent presentation, is: Does holding the dog like that hurt it? Does shaking it hurt it? Where is the dog now? That last question is probably impossible to answer, just curious. Shaking a baby causes brain damage, are puppies the same? I don’t think you went overly deep, I think it was understood on both sides what it meant. Thank you!
I wanna know if they ate the puppy, or whether the puppy was actually a robot designed by the CIA used to brainwash and control Putin from the inside, I don't think you've poke enough or even questioned enough about these possibilities...
WHAT IT SHOWS IS THAT PUTIN DOESNT APPRICIATE HARM TO THOSE WHO DO NOT DESERVE IT. THOSE TRAITS DO NOT CHANGE. REAL MEN CAN RECONIZE REAL MEN. I LOVE PUTIN
I find it hilarious that most people complaining about how the dog was held obviously have never been around a mom and her puppies. It's like when this girl told people I neglected my dog because her food bowl was always empty when she came over at night. But she never owned a dog and didn't realize your supposed to feed your dog on a schedule especially when your dog gets wet food.
Yes, you should pick them up by the scruff of the neck because that way they don't squirm. Because as you pointed out, they're moved by the family adults. It is in the DNA from when dogs were wolves. Other species like bears, cats, and just about any species out there will move them this way.
All mother dogs carry their puppies like this, its normal.. ive always carried puppies under 3 months like this, any older and they lose the thick loose skin designed for it and it hurts them, and no he wasnt doing it as a pain thing to see if its tough, its a submission thing if it trusts the one holding it and if it does it will be submissive and loyal to its owner just like its mother... its not a test of pain as it felt no pain, its a test of courage by being completely controlled whilst suspended high and not questioning its owners intentions..
Aaahhh. It's wonderful that you made this video, nice! It's such a good reminder to be tolerant toward others cultures, without knowing I totally judged him. 🥺 I should work on that hey.

im not 100 percent convinced parents carry there pupies by there skin on the back of the neck i honesty dont know why this is not mentioned at all
you've really never seen a dog handled like that? I can understand not liking it, as i don't do it, but its extremely common and its called scruffing. puppies and kittens have scruffs to be carried safely by their mother, and when they are carried they have a hypnosis response so they don't wiggle around.
Though I should point out that you shouldn't be doing this to a puppy of that weight, around 8 weeks for large breeds is about when it will start to hurt them.
also while you shouldn't pick up an adult cat like this, pinching their scruff can still trigger that hypnosis response and calm them down, not sure if this works with adult dogs though.
I was looking for this comment.
A perfect complementary video to John Oliver's. Amazing work and superb research!
I'm Russian and that was quite interesting to watch
I want to become russian and this video was great ❤️
Their internet is hyper-restricted.
This is another unique video in my firehose of RUclips suggestions!
facets
Great video, Phil. Cultural context does matter in both foreign relations and in its media coverage. Of course, having a head of state doing such act and the reaction will be as expected (LOL WUT?), most fitting for clickbait but as you said what he did was a symbolic gesture of a strong geopolitical (and economic) alliance.
People all over the world pick up puppies that way, it's not a special Turkmenistan thing. It mimics the way that dogs pick up their own puppies.
That seems reasonable a lot of the time!
Alabai is one of the great dogs in the Earth: strong, brave, independent, and very smart. If you have some big area of land you want to defend Alabai is number 1.
Ppl worried about how the dog was held 😆. That is a lucky ass dog. Yall should feel sorry street dogs ,not oligarch dogs lol
I really appreciate your in depth look at obscure events in history that would otherwise just be forgotten. Keep up the great work!
thanks!!
Lifting a puppy by the scruff of his neck is definitely one way of determining its demeanor.... Mother dogs lift their pups this way which makes the pup freeze motionless allowing her to, for instance, move the pup to a safer location without a struggle... ❤😊
How crazy is it putin came to the rescue of the puppy and said wtf, why you holding it like that. And comforted it next to his bosom
It’s pretty crazy.
wow that is an interesting explnation,I was alwayrs mad because this guy held that gorgeous puppy..thanks!!
holding a dog like a mcdonalds combo meal is wild
Now that's an excellent explainer video ... thanks
Oh my God. I haven't watched the video yet. But I have ALWAYS wandered what happened to this little pup!
As a Turk, i do not search deep meaning on it. The people and their mothers holt their puppy just like that. It is a normal thing!
What happened to the dog? This one is hard to track down. But I made a short about a diplomacy dog that I was able to learn about: ruclips.net/user/shortsx3wIkIwPRZk
It's Nato that come to Russia border . Russia has the right to protect the motherland from missile infrastructure.
As a Russian I am so exited to watch videos on stuff that is relevant to me that are made by my favorite journalists on RUclips. Watching about peculiar history of USA is cool too, but hey, mom, look we are in a TV!
At the same time it is sad that the reason this is happening is not a good one :(
You could tell even Putin steps in to take the pup As he obviously didn’t like the way he held it Puppy was abit big for that grasp 😮
I need to go back and watch original again. I always was taken by Putin's body language as he appears to show concern for how the dog is handled.
Yes - that response is kinda key.
I always understood its a safe way to hold puppies, not cute but safe. But why did Putin, a dog guy, react like that? Dog was never in danger nor uncomfortable.... Is this Putins sweet side?
@@lizbatista9838 I kinda thought that it showed Putin was thinking a) this is kinda weird how he's holding the dog so long and b) I'm not gonna be dragged into this guy's photo op for another 20 minutes.
Thanks 🙏 that's cool!!!
To me you'll always be the funny British man.
Thanks for bringing us along on this journey too!
Is that a British accent? I don’t think so.
You’re not British
Jesus! That man picking that poor pup up like that makes Putin look kind. Unbelievable.
pretty normal to pick a pup up from the neck, their mothers do it too.
Loved the video! I’ve been fascinated about Turkmenistan since the John Oliver episode. Gurbanguly is quite the character and I once made a powerpoint presentation about him to show a group of friends. I never did learn why he held the dog like that but I’m glad I know now! Gonna go update the presentation now!! Thanks!!!
Haha a powerpoint fantastic!
His son is now in power and that pssy is even more mysoginistic
Afghanistan is not a flat dry desert. Its in the mountains and under the rain shadow of the Himalayas. So the picture you showed was somewhere else. I've lived there.
I have heard it is epic and beautiful ❤
We always picked up puppies and kittens like that where I am from. It renders them immediately calm and submissive. Pick up a kitten by its scruff and watch the reflex action illicited from the brain and nervous system in a few seconds.
It is natural because their parents carry them this way when necessary to move them or rescue them.
He cares more about the well-being of a puppy than actual human lives in Ukraine and even his own people whose lives he’s using for his political games.
Ah yes the most important questions being answered with grade A quality
it’s for the puppy
you heard him, it’s for the puppy
I'm truly grateful for the education.
Had no idea about half the facts here.
I'll keep watching the space.
I was expecting some follow up on the Puppy. Like is the Puppy still alive and living with Putin? What happened to the puppy?
It's been promoted to the command of General on the Donbas front as Putin keeps losing all his Generals.
@@DucatiKozak do you have a link?
Can you go back in time and find out why LBJ (President Johnson) picked up his fully grown beagle by its EARS??!
He held that dog like a bag of potatoes I'm trying to give to my mom
It’s SO much creepier now that we know why he holds the dog like that. Straight out of Animal Farm. The puppy that complains or asks for help is not loyal, not fit to be called an Alibi, and thus worthless. You can imagine what they do with such puppies.
Never did I think a puppy was so important to international affairs!
First time I’ve seen a politician take responsibility for designing something and actually believe them. That pedestal is very tacky.
same with the books! i always assume it’s a ghostwriter, but these books….
Wildest premise for a video I've seen all week
1:21, did the puppy liked it when it was being held like this?
Is this type of animal cruelty?
WoW ! Wonderful work, bravo 👏
Best first minute of a video I have seen in a while. Very fun and well written introduction
Awesome stuff, this channel is a gem. I don't know if you write articles but if you do in the future post it on your community tab. Not every week or whatever but occasionally do it with something special that you wrote. I'm subscribed here for the quality content you author and create.
thanks a lot! i try to post my vox videos there. i wanna get back into writing but just don’t quite have time yet!
I love how Americans try to pronounce the 'kh' sound authentically. But they put too much pressure on it. I would pronounce the 'h' sound at 1:27 the same way I pronounce the 'h' in 'hospital'
thanks for the tip! i watched a ton of rec videos for this but this is interesting to know!
I think we ask this about all authoritarian leaders wondering if they are a genius or just crazy.
Yeah it’s like both sides just seem too extreme to me…but I can be talked into either.
You’ve got to be some level of crazy to want to be a dictator, no?
Thanks. Saw that clip a few months ago, thought it was odd, but never looked into it beyond that.
Phil, I expect you might be interested in reaching out to the various associations of "Returned" Peace Corps Volunteers from Central Asia's Stan countries. Look for "RPCV Kyrgyz Republic association" or similar and you can mine a lot of information on this kind of question. I served in Kyrgyzstan 25 years ago and can tell you the difference between besh and bashi and all that kind of thing still, but there's a little subculture of a few thousand American teacher types who used to live in villages across the world.
Never thought of that - that's a great idea!
Amazing Time Magazine wouldn't take a few minutes to do actual journalism and find the same answers you did. That's the world we live in. Sloppy journalism and propaganda. Thanks for clearing this up. Bravo
Super interesting
This is just... Legitimately great journalism, honestly.
my grandma and everyone from my family in Europe picks up puppies like that. It's a perfectly fine way to pick up your pup and if you use google it you'll see that so many do it without, and nobody is testing the dog its just a easy way to pick up a puppy. Pretty sure farmers even in the US hold dogs like that. You might just be reading slightly way too much into this.
Yeah even dogs mom's hold their pups like that
We do the same thing with our puppies in the US
I absolutely hate seeing people pick up a dog be the neck like that. HATEFUL.
You explained it exactly according to NATO's eye...that's what you guys always doing in western media..great job🤣🤣🤣🤣
Thank you for sharing these interesting details...i was curious to know, why the hell, he is holding the pup like that !
Strange and interesting. Truly spectacular Phil!
Putin took the puppy home and laughed hysterically as he feed it to his Siberian tigers.
One again a question I had never really could find the answer.
Thanks! I will catch up on your vids soon!
ท่านพี่ปู..รักสัตว์นะดูสิ..อุ้มแบบถนอมรักเหมือนอุ้มเด็กๆเลย..ชื่นชอบพี่ปูมากๆๆค่ะ.
6:51 so he was holding him that way not because he is a weirdo, but because he's performing a test of his dog
come on Phil, you googled enough about him to realise he's batshit crazy :D i worked at a local university (in Russia) where students would regularly miss studies and eventually drop out without ever starting to study even though they had our official visas because Turkmenistan's border control believed they want to flee the country, they just never come. it's so widespread no-one is surpirsed. it's impossible to extend your passport, too, so even if you manage to go to another country for education and would like to stay there for good - welp, there is literally no way to extend your passport except go back to Turkmenistan, hopefully extend it but probably never manage to exit the country again
also Putin is definitely a madman, all dictators are
the son is proof!!!!
And all these books that were showed - No one read them. Usually the government forced people to buy them or sometimes you can get a book as a present from a work, but only if it’s a government agency.
You can hold puppies (and cats) like that. In fact, they like it.
Excellent video! When i saw the original video, i was SO angry. But watching your video sheds some light on it
During the whole video I was wondering about the puppy: how's he doing, what about him...Wasn't really following Putin's private life but this dog wasn't played up that much either
Yea, I'm also curious what happened to the dog. He'll be around 5 or 6 by now.
I hope the dog wasn't just shipped off somewhere shortly after the photoshoot and he's having a nice life and gets plenty of love and exercise.
It's reported that Putin really likes animals and has lots of dogs so I think (and hope) the puppy is fine.
@@Arushi701 One Austrian liked puppies too
You discovered water 👏🏻
I remember this because I watched it like 3 years ago and as I didn't knew much about Putin at the time, I thought of him as a likeable person and was confused why everyone was so surprised he rescued the puppy. 3 years later, he went out of his way to prove me wrong. The comments were right. I stand corrected.
The headlines at the time definitely show how the media vibe was different too - you weren’t alone!
Putin's not a psycho, he's just a thug. Not too bright, but not a puppy-kicker.
It was showing close ups of him flinching to cradle it. Yeah, more compassionate in that moment that for the last 110 ish days.
Great video. Such an extraordinary view into a unknown social construct. Great detective work
Damn that's a good video Phil. You just don't know for sure if you're going to get gold until you start digging.
Mostly when I think of Turkmenistan I think of it as one of the "totalitarian three", along with North Korea and Eritrea it is the most authoritarian country in the world.
It's not just weird or a test; it's painful for the dog and should never be done!
I would imagine that it is at the estate with rest of his dogs.
No, it doesn't hurt, it's a little puppy, and that's how their mothers carry them.
their coat is thick, its not the same as pinching a person by their neck
So, who else jumped to Last Week Tonight immediately after watching this? One of Oliver's best episodes.
It is a good companion too for those who won’t to dive into more unusual antics.
I once heard that pure breed dogs could be picked up from the skin of the neck and it wouldn't hurt them
You finally spilled the beans after mumbling through the hole video GOOD JOB
This image has haunted me for YEARS... YEARS...
I finally know why. Thanks
6:52 "not because he's a weirdo!"
Akhal Teke Horses : Allow us to introduce ourselves
Hahaha those poor, beautiful horses.
My friend from Turkmenistan told me that by law they can only drive white cars, kinda weird.
Aaahhh.
It's wonderful that you made this video, nice!
It's such a good reminder to be tolerant toward others cultures, without knowing I totally judged him. 🥺 I should work on that hey.
Central Asian is criminally underrated and Turkmenistan is one hell of a curiosity.
