In my case I was diagnosed with stage three kidney disease, that diagnosis is still listed in my chart. I started carnivore near the end of March and in May my kidney numbers had improved and in August they were in the normal range for my age (73). For me that solves the question of whether a high protein diet is bad for my kidneys, setting aside all of the other health benefits I have received. This includes having my A1c falling to a normal range.

Oh my gosh James, you just made me cry. I'm so very happy for you! I started carnivore in March of 2022, but the holidays got me back on SAD (lots of sugar). I started back up Apr 1 and have been strict ever since. On my right side, they took 1/3 of my kidney in Jan 2015. (Cancer),(very small tumor, clean margins)
All my checkups these 8 years have been great since then. Until now. Ultrasound showed I have hydrophrenosis in my ureter on the LEFT side and protein in my urine. I have to ask myself if this is from carnivore diet? Where I got my checkup (MD Anderson) said that I was stage 3a. But I had a normal checkup 6 days earlier with my reg pcp which had my eGFR at 83. 😳. Obviously, my urine results came back abnormal because I was burning full ketones. But the protein was there...(a trace).
This has had me so scared. They don't know what's causing the hydronephrosis until they do a CT or MRI. I don't want to do that because that always damages the kidneys. Ugh.
BUT, I don't want to have an emergency with a kidney either.
This Dr just told Judy that it's better to have lower amounts of protein more times a day. Is this what you did?...or were you fasting like most carnivores?
Gosh I'm so stinking excited that you turned your numbers around to normal, you must be on cloud nine.

@@cindyhesse5196 I eat strict carnivore and eat OMAD on days that I eat. I have done some longer fasts over the last seven months up to ninety-six hours. I have been just doing twenty two hour fasts for the last couple of months, but I am going to do a week long one next week. My freezers are full and I have some meat that needs to be eaten this week, so next Sunday is DDay.
We are all so different it is hard to draw parallels sometimes, but it certainly wouldn't hurt to spread out your protein through the day. It also might be worth trying some fasting. Jason Fung is a Nephrologist who promotes fasting and is worth checking out. I will pray that you are alright.

Went carnivore two years ago which helped tremendously but I'm still undereating and have a hard time with proper nutrition (whilst still gaining weight). What I AM eating is really good food, just not enough of it. This discussion hit home for me that it's vitally important to load the protein especially first thing in the morning which i've been unable to do. OMAD I maintain my high school weight.
    2MAD I gain weight.
I am a volume eater and I eat too much. EVERYONE needs to experiment for themselves.
I also had to slow down on added fat, I just eat what comes with the meat, again that works for ME.
I find that a few blueberries in my yogurt occasionally is a treat not triggering carbohydrate craving and wheat causes anxiety.
My advice to anyone just starting out (I am a 2 year ketovore less than 20 grams carbs per day)
Get the junk out of your diet, go to carnivore as an elimination diet for a CLEAN way to detox (I had no clue wheat caused my anxiety)
Experiment and reintroduce and take all these experts with a grain of salt.

I didn’t believe it initially-so I decided to go 2 weeks gluten free to disprove his work. Well…! I had so many health improvements during that 2 weeks that I extended to 30 days-and here I am 9 years later living gluten free and so much healthier

It seems that younger fat people are better able to add fasts in their week to reduce insulin resistance, but those older than 50 should be extremely careful with fasts and OMAD because they are more likely to lose muscle during fasts and not eat enough protein if they just eat once or twice a day

If I don't add fat to even "fatty" meat, my appetite is not controlled. I'm still experiencing craving, obsession and food chatter unless I eat more than that. What do you mean by you “lost a lot of bone on carnivore?” How does being carnivore affect your bone health? Have never heard of that. And how do you know that it isn’t because you’re not getting enough calcium? I’m curious, not criticizing or anything since I have no idea whether being carnivore does affect one’s bone health. I’m simply making an educated guess that it shouldn’t, but am very curious as to how you came to the conclusion that your being carnivore made you lose bone.

Because I noticed that recently myself when I felt really full and couldn’t eat another bite, but then I was able to eat a ton of ice cream and all sorts chocolate desserts nonstop. So he’s definitely right about protein being extremely satiating. Of course, fiber also makes you feel full, so if you’re having plenty of protein with vegetables and fruits for your meal, you definitely can feel very, very full for quite a long time. But I can still continue to eat if it was ice cream and chocolate desserts. 😅

Yeah, but there’s no debate that protein from animal products are far more superior than plant-based ones. However, I have heard of bodybuilders that are completely plant-based and I’m sure it’s trickier to do than simply getting protein from animal products. Not against plant-based or any other type of diet, but I personally prefer an omnivore diet so I can get nutrients from various sources. People that follow a certain diet of any kind tend to be fanatics and that really discredit them in my eyes. I only listen to science-based evidence, not people with agendas and/or biased simply because they believe their beliefs are the only way and the correct way. And I find them extremely annoying and egotistical. Don Layman isn’t anything like those fanatics pushing their own beliefs onto others out of pride and bias. Everything he shares is science-based with no agenda and no prejudice.

Not sure if a fast loses muscle mass. Fasting researchers say no, that we adapt and only lose sensecent cells and fat, and recycle proteins from damaged cells which makes sense. When we were cave people we fasted when the hunt went bad. Losing muscle would not make sense, only when starving beginsd after about 30 days, then the organs also get eaten. The primary motivator for animals and cave people is hunger. The body is smart enough to prioritize and adapt on every level - that's what it does constantly. Have fasted twice for 14 days with no problems at all. Was not even hungry. Had surprising energy too, and just felt great. Dr. Layman should get away from all those studies and try it. As for Judy, she overthinks and obsessively worries about everything. She likely does not have many cave people as clients. If you optimize 80% your body will do the rest because you are not actually optimizing your biology, just getting it within a healthy range where the body can take over.

It’s impossible to get enough protein and nutrients on OMAD. Tried it myself and lost a ton of muscles. Is there a reason you have to do OMAD? If you could give yourself a 10-hour eating window instead of doing OMAD, you could divide your protein intake into 3 separate meals, with about 4 hours in between. I think that’s the best way to calm your anxiety is to stabilize your blood sugar by eating 3 meals a day or two meals with a high-protein snack. OMAD makes you lose muscle and causes anxiety because your blood sugar could really dip outside of that one meal you’re having. Happens to me all the time when I do OMAD and I get headaches and feel weak sometimes if I go without any food for longer than 24 hours. There’s really no benefit in doing OMAD, just a lot of hype for those preaching OMAD to make money off of people by making people think they’re improving everything about their health when it isn’t and zero scientific evidence to support it. I tried OMAD for at least 3-4 years and it did nothing to my health, other than making me lose tons of muscle and headachey, hungry and anxious.

There's something called Protein-Sparing Modified Fast which is very low carb, low fat (30 grams/day) and high protein. Maria Emmerich is known as one of its biggest proponents. But she just wants people to do it twice in a week on non-consecutive days and eat higher fat the rest of the days. People that do it too frequently, particularly women, can have a lot of hormonal problems. It's supposed to work like a fast but consuming protein so that the body doesn't cannibalize its muscle when fasting.

But I wish there was more discussion on the vegan arguments that protein consumption is overrated. I guess there may be no arguments because no real studies (in humans) have been done. Probably not in mice either...at least not REAL comparative studies. Like how higher protein might extend life, vs low protein, and include ALL variables. Like for instance, restricted calories with low protein vs restricted cal with high protein. Of course quality of protein matters, so specific amino acids would have to be varied, as well. Probably too convoluted to put the studies together, and get funding, too. 🤔

I don't understand how this community is not bringing awareness that there is too much protein consideration. As a male, strict carnivore for over a year, all metabolic factors average to optimal, with the exception of blood sugars. If I eat over 90g of protein a day, regardless of whether it is spread out with a high-fat ratio, my blood sugars will go to Type 2 diabetic levels. I know many others that experience this as well. Why is this just ignored by the Carnivore and Keto groups?

@@lf7065 Below 120g per day of protein, I can keep BG at around 90 to 110. Below 90g of protein, I can get it closer to optimals. If I eat over 120g, not sure how much above results in how high they go but I will go to 140s plus BG. This is with A1C testing and strips at fasting, before I eat, 30,60,90,120 minutes after I eat, and before I go to bed.
Yes, I was diagnosed over 10 years ago. I reversed it on Keto, not knowing it was Keto at the time. Went back to my REALLY BAD HABITS, drinking included.
About 2 years ago I went a strict carnivore. For a year I listened to people like Dr Barry. That was a waste, he told me to eat more protein and claimed protein won't raise your BG levels or try to sell the BS about how it is not pathological. He is 100% wrong.
I am very fit, basically have a 6-pack, and have experimented with vigorous exercise from cardio to resistant training and even experimented with no exercise to see if I was overdoing it.
I have experimented with fat thresholds and mixture of animal foods from lion diet to a mixed bag. Experimented with OMAD to 3MAD.
The only thing that moves the needle and a pretty predictable fashion at this point is the protein or at least the caloric load that is based on the amount of protein I am tracking.
Here is the issue that exists with these Carnivore doctors. They don't know, they are just guessing. Even in excessive levels of glucose, it takes decades to realize the damage it is doing before you can see them on tests. They have no way of knowing if excessive protein is doing the same. So what do they do, they just try to rationalize it. I get it, it is what pays their bills.
The only thing I can drill it down to that makes some logical sense, is that we are designed to be at an energy deficit, but at what cost?
From a historical perspective, how we evolved, we didn't have 2lbs of meat a day to eat 365 days a year. Add all the other factors in modern life, who the heck knows.
