  • If you're playing publicly in a wedding or church and you're suddenly asked to play something in an unfamiliar key, rather than making some excuse about eating dodgy shellfish and rushing off to the toilet, try this. More videos at www.quaverbox.com

      Michelle Kramer You'd be surprised how many different songs sound strikingly similar. ThePianoGuys do something with a bunch of pop songs that have different melodies but the exact same chord progression. I bet Coldplay uses a similar progression in a lot of his music, that's probably why he thought it sounded like him lol

It could sound like crap to everyone else, but you've succeeded if it sounds good to you.Play music first and foremost for yourself, imo. hardly
      the theory behind pop music is pretty simple: I, IV, V, and vi chords in different orders (and sometimes the same order)
      the fact that there are hundreds of videos on youtube saying the same thing in a different format without explaning the theory is amazing to me
      learn basic theory which takes like 30 minutes, and you can improv like this in any key signature

  • @quaverbox
    @quaverbox  12 лет назад +2

    Thanks for the feedback! If you switch the chords on top, then it's not really an "emergency" technique anymore because you'd have to think a lot more. You'd then need to know the scale/chords in the key you're playing and approach it in a more conventional way. On the other hand, instead of just using the 1st and 5th, you could also use a 7th. This extra note might provide enough variation to the mix so that it's not as repetitive.

    This technique is really aimed at those who can play pretty well in certain keys but have no clue in other keys. They'd therefore need to work out the 1st and 5th of the key and use that as a starting point as they played each chord. This allows them to quickly produce chords like the major 2nd, m7 and the sus in a foreign key without having to think so much. If you're new to the keyboard, I'd recommend learning those chords first before applying this technique as it'd make more sense that way.

  • @quaverbox

    This is really just a simple technique to help beginner piano players in an "emergency" situation - it uses the 4 most common chords in popular songs. The fact you can identify the progression as a I-VI-V-IV probably means you're already capable of adding other notes. If the progression uses chords like II or III, I wouldn't blindly play the 1st and 5th of as better options exist. If you're playing a II-V-I, chances are, it's a pre 2000 song, and I'd choose other notes that better suit that era

    Nice work!
    I like the way you use the 1st and 5th as harmonic "anchors", but suspend 2nds and 4ths in the right hand, making for a more interesting passage than just the 3rd in the middle of the triad in root position.
    Another, jazzier variant of your technique is to move the right hand up two scale degrees: use the 3rd and minor 7th as anchors, and filling the space between the anchors with the 5th (for a more basic sound), varying it by using the 4th or 6th, exactly as you did using 2nd or 4th between the 1st and 5th anchors.
    Thanks for sharing! We can all learn from each other ... :-)

    Hope this helps

    So it seems like in pop music, omitting the third and ignoring good voicing is widely acceptable. And I noticed many times pop music don't always have a perfect cadence. G9 to D is plagal. I - vi7 - Vsus- IV2? The harmony is quite parallel, but because of all the decorations it makes up for it.

    This is really sweet! I studied for years and did rather well, but I learned improvisation way too late! (austerity is a woman of ill repute, rant) If I couldn't remember it, or read it off a sheet, I couldn't play it! It was like being brought up in the Ayn Rand, school of the Arts. "Bust tushie over it, until your parents could impress whoever was brave enough to enter that Twilight Zone THEY called home".

    haha! I've only fallen asleep once during a piano lesson, but that was for about 30 seconds, and could probably be considered as an extended blink =)

    I've taught myself chopsticks, jungle bells, Mary had a little lamb, and the first 9 or 10 notes of fur Elise. I'm pretty proud.

    Do you know the best way to learn piano being entirely new to instruments and music? I absolutely love and am entirely fascinated by how they sound and play and desperately wish to learn how to play one.

    yeah i know! it's just the frame rate of the video camera that's out of synch with the frame rate of the tempo display, and that's why sometimes it flickers (out of sync) and other times in the video it doesn't (in sync). It's like the game I used to play as a kid listening to my dad's car indicator ticking and seeing if it ticks in time with any other cars indicators around us =). good news is, all my recent videos have been shot on a different keyboard with no flashing lights!

    1 - 6m- 5- 4 progression. not quite as standard as 1- 6m - 4 - 5 progression, but works well enough. The technique he's teaching by the way is NOT sus2, rather it is add9(no 3)- in that he's using a jazz chord voicing, as opposed to a closed voice.

    Hi Terrance! I absolutely love your videos - in fact, these are the only videos that REALLY help me on the internet (trust me I've searched, seen and bought probably hundreds of videos, including going to a private piano teacher!) guess what, yours beat them all. You are the best mate!
    What I'm wondering about is that you play the same chord just switching the bassnote, how would I go on about this technique when in a foreign key, but also switching the chords on the top? not only the bass?

  • @goodled
    @goodled 11 лет назад

    haha - made me laugh when you chose Ab as your foreign key, as a gospel musician Ab is more common than C
    Great video :)
