That whole album is a gem. My favorite is "The Man Who Sailed Around His Soul" which has such a cool vibe. And the video with it was great too. Very Prisoner TV show feeling, with that late 60's British Mod style.
I think angular just refers to the spiky, jerky sound they had in their punky beginnings. They took on a more pastoral tone with more than a hint of Beatles on their later albums. They always had fantastic catchy tunes with smart, moving and funny lyrics. They are usually, accurately, described as "quintessentially English" and a number of British indie bands that appeared later owe a debt to them. The singer on this is Partridge.
To check out the angular side of XTC's early days, try this series of three videos from the band which include the singles "This Is Pop?", "Statue of Liberty" and "Are You Receiving Me?" all released in 1978. Exact title: 3 XTC Videos (1978 - 1979) "This Is Pop" "Statue of Liberty" "Are You Receiving Me?" (4K HD AUDIO)
just spitballing but the tree represents religious beliefs and how people cling to it for support especially the elderly the film reverse is a cause/effect analogy referencing the did god create man or did man create god motif
Someone once said XTC were GOD's apology for the Beatles breaking up. They have an unrivalled back catalogue and are a big favourite with other reactors.
XTC are an incredibly wonderful and diverse band. They have a long and ever changing discography. Keep exploring.

2:21 JR Hartley there, probably thinking about fly fishing.
Did you listen to the lyrics?
My favorite by them is Senses Working Overtime. :D

A living collage of emotions and beliefs......and feelings.... in god
This song could have been written yesterday

My favorite band of ever, very diverse. That is an atheist song.
Overall, XTC are amazing but this one is a gem!
To all the haters out there: this is as well an Atheist experience. We are of profound disbelief in religious thought.
One of the worst reactions to this song I've ever seen
Not too impactful? Seriously?
I think I just watched someone completely missing the point of the entire song 😮
Pretty chill and soft, not too impactful, nice... REALLY DUDE!? I give up...
