That was by far my biggest video disappointment so far this year. A worker wandered into the camera's path, so I had to move the camera. That wouldn't be a big deal, I move the camera to get a better angle all the time. But it happened at the worst possible moment. I never saw the tower collapse -- I heard it while I was still setting up the camera.

As a person who understands and appreciates architecture, it saddens me to see a well-preserved building wasted. Why weren't the windows salvaged? Don't say cost because cost isn't the issue. These building should be stripped of windows, lighting, and interior pews, woodwork. ALL can be reused, re-purposed.

Anyone moaning about the architeral salvage should get out there and do it themselves. I'm sure the contractor would be happy to work with you in advance of the demo.
As for the windows, I can tell you they would be useless. Look at the height of them and the size. How many buildings have the floor to ceiling height to fit those and be suitable for the style as well? Getting them out in one piece and transport would be next to impossible.
Lastly they would not meet modern building codes with regard to glazing and heat loss etc.
But if you all know better, get out there and save some windows!

John, this series is very relaxing to watch. I commend your efforts to show how the area is changing. A new generation always builds upon the ruins of the old, since the beginning of civilisation.
To those that lament the demolition of this 60+ year-old church, it isn't just a condominium going up on this two-acre site: Christ Lutheran is building a c.350 seat santuary on this site, too. I guess that the redevelopment of the property with the addition of housing will provide a sufficient trust fund for the church to maintain its mission into the twenty-first century. As is often said, a church is not its building, it is its people. As a follow-up thought to the preservationists, I sympathise with you to an extent; however, these old buildings from the last century, from before the energy price shocks of the 1970s, are notoriously expensive to maintain. And mainline churches in America no longer can rely on endowments and member-estates to pay the bills. This project, renewal of the physical space and a realignment of the mission to the faith community, makes perfect sense to me.

    • @JohnZWetmore
      @JohnZWetmore  2 года назад +3

The plans for the site were changed several times over the years. The final plan is just apartments, with no new sanctuary for Christ Lutheran. In contrast, Central United Methodist Church in Arlington was able to incorporate a new sanctuary in the apartment building being built on its site.

As someone who loves the art and science of history and historical preservation, I have to provide a factual statement- not every old building is historical, nor can all older buildings with great architecture be saved. It has never been that way in world history. Some of the old gives way to the new, and yes, sometimes that which is old is new again. Fact of life

Why is wrecking company not using a long-boom (Liebherr) to do this job? Maybe they don’t have one or the developer wasn’t prepared to pay the haulage charges. In any event it would speed up the work.

Again - it’s incredible that they tore all of this down - wasted beautiful architecture, just to build apartments. The apartments created from converted churches are beautiful reuse of old properties - and the apartments with stained glass and other cool remnants can fetch premium prices. Such incredible nearsightedness on the part of these idiot developers.

THIS IS A CROOKED COMPANY. LOOK AT THE PAY-OFF'S. UNION SHOP AND THEY WORK TURTLE SLOW.
Berg, through his attorney, admitted to participating in paying bribes. Berg paid Haskins at least eight times totaling $14,000 while
Haskins worked for Adamo, a large demolition contractor in the HHF program in Detroit, and
later paid $4,000 in bribes after Haskins went to work for the City of Detroit, where he was
responsible for bids in the HHF program. Berg also paid bribe money to Daguanno, a senior
estimator at Adamo, on at least 71 occasions over eight years totaling $372,750 related to
demolition subcontracts, including in the HHF program.

This operator don't know his job. He goes to the hardest parts first. He should first demolish weakest parts and than put the hardest off balance. But he wants straight to concrete and steel. He does not have even the basic knowledge about phisics and engineering. He works here and there without any plan.
