This song embodies everything that makes Rush who they are. Insane drumming, intricate guitar work, driving bass, smart lyrics and a plethora of time changes, add to that Geddys unique vocal style and this encompasses everything that makes this band a cut above. Quintessential Rush. 😊
I have used the “Rush In Rio” version of this to introduce a number of people to Rush. And yet another song that just proves live Rush is the best Rush. The only time I’ve listened to the studio version in recent history was when Justin dropped his reaction video. Lol. Absolutely incredible
This song, and the whole PeW album might well be Rush's peak song and lyric writing. Both are so good on this album. "Art as expression, not as market campaigns, will still capture our imaginations" "The most endangered species, the honest man, will still survive annihilation." Those two lines especially always resonated with me.
What a great song! Alex once said it's one of his favorite to play in concert. I think this was the tour when they brought the song back into the playlist. If I'm not mistaken, they hadn't played it in a while and this was the tour when they started to add it into the mix frequently.
Superb song, really one of the best. For me that series of albums from 2112 through to Signals is some of the best musical creations and creativity that any band would be proud to call a career. Simply fantastic, love it! Thanks Justin, thanks for for staying on this journey.
I get chills every time I hear this song to this day, as well as I finding myself head-bobbing and swaying to the grooves, riffs, and crazy drum parts that all seem to be just about perfect. ❤️🙏
I'm also in the "Permanent Waves > Moving Pictures" camp. Also, during this tour, the fanbase went nuts when they realized that the setlist included both 2112 in its entirety as well as the return of Natural Science.
For me this is some of the best song writing on one of the best albums ever, period. Everything about it is a masterpiece and those transitions O my!! And yes it's in my top 5 Rush songs awesome man I still get excited listening to it.
neil and geddy awesome drum and bass rocks in pretty much every track , however iv grown to admire alex more and more his playing allows rush to go off on their tangents . incredibly emotional player
Natural Science. It was and always will be my favorite live song and the incredible imagery behind the stage. The lyrics the music incredible! 🔥🤘Completely epic. ♾
Totally agree. Signals and Permanent Waves are a notch above Moving Pictures, but MP is still really good. Natural Science has got to be in my top 5 Rush songs. Just awesome.
Great reaction. It's crazy that we had to wait until Different Stages to get this song live (it was inexplicably not on Exit Stage Left or A Show of Hands). I've heard bootlegs of the Permanent Waves tour, but I prefer this version of Natural Science, almost two decades after it was first released. The band seems a little tighter and seems more concerned with how it sounds to the audience, and they weren't just trying to replicate the studio version. Oh, and I'm also a Rush heretic in that I prefer Permanent Waves and Signals much more than Moving Pictures. Moving Pictures is a masterpiece, obviously, but the songs just don't work together as cohesively, and they don't have the same overarching spirituality to them.
The big deal of this tour (which I saw in TO) was that they did all of 2112...but the thing that blew me away was when they pulled THIS out. I honestly never thought I'd get to see them play Natural Science. They returned to it on a few tours after T4E..but in that moment it was a shocker to me - best moment of the gig.
My favorite part is at 3:02 when they repeat that opening bit (I don't know what it's called - stanza? IDK 😀) so much better than the standard version IMHO
Funny. Haha. ? I got stuck in an elevator yesterday. Saturday night. Calls made, etc. I found the music still played on my phone. Really, seriously, no kidding. What did I play first? Natural Science. Really. Perfect timing Justin. One of my comfort songs.
Moving pictures was arguably a transitional record (people will point to Signals, but they were showing their synth direction on Moving Pictures) where you could say Permanent Waves was the peak of their late-70's style of prog rock.
People talk about Moving Pictures and I think it's their best selling album but Permanent Waves is something!! Definitely Signals too, and most of the others!
After watching you from the beginning I feel safe in assuming you would enjoy playing this song…that it would simply be a nice mix of challenge and fun. Appreciate you taking us along on this ride through their discography.
My pet peeve with generational bands like Rush is when they don't use the actual instruments they used on the old songs. I want to hear Geddy's Ric, Alex's actual acoustic, not a jazz bass made to sound really close to the Ric, not an electric with whatever gadgets on/with it to sound like an acoustic (more like a tinny Ovation). A band traveling together in a van being their own roadies/technicians may not want to lug around multiple pieces but if your this large with multiple trucks and personel there is no excuse, except for Neil's drums a couple extra guitar cases for roadie #17 to carry in and out of trailer #9 is not a big ask, is it? Very nitpicky, maybe, but it's visually satisfying to see an actual acoustic on a stand in front and extremely satisfying to see the beautiful Ric slung over Geddy's shoulder, my mind instantly thinks "Yes, here comes an oldie for us oldies". It's kind of weird visually to hear a sound that you know comes from one thing, coming from another, I have a friend whom has a 72 VW Beetle with an American V8 engine transplanted in it and it just is "weird" to hear.
I think this is the first time they played "Natural Science" in years (NS and 2112 both in the same show?!), also where they unveiled the new live arrangement that repeats the "Wheels within wheels in a spiral array" phrase, but cuts Alex's second solo toward the end.
06:39 I think you need to listen to this album again, alone, with a bag of weed, and the largest air drum set you can imagine. Joking aside, you seem to be having fun with this. Putting a fun start on the day. Thanks.
This song represents the definition of prog-rock as well as what Rush are. It is just so PROGALICIOUS! A perfect intro. Each instrument being wrenched of every possible note and sound by three masters of their craft. The time signature changes. Multiple parts with different sections and the beautiful transition between them. Perfect story told by intelligent lyrics. What can you add!? Nothing. The song "speaks" for itself. Wait until you hear "The Garden" from 'Clockwork Angels'.
2nd fav. Rush tune!. Let's take the Justin Challenge...track by track, Permanent Waves vs. Moving Pic.s. My pics. 1) Spirit of Radio 2) Freewill 3) Jacob's Ladder 4) Limelight 5) Camera Eye and Different Strings are a push for me. Love them equally 6) Natural Science. 7) Vital Signs (unopposed). I concede, but by micron scale margins for each tune.
I can't recall them ever playing the "Art as expression" verse, and Alex's second solo, at a concert. Strange, because it doesn't save much time. I wonder if there are technical reasons? I can't imagine that's the case.
Signals my favourite album , hands Down. Permanent is phenomenal also, but I don`t really think of how great it is until I listen to it again. Entre Nous and Different Strings are classics, and like you said top to bottom bangers. (I just looked at the discography and realised i group my favourites in threes. Farewell, Hemispheres, Permanent - Signals, Grace, Power Windows - Presto, Roll, Counterparts - Vapor Trails (original mix), Snakes and Arrows and Clockwork Angels. hmm)
LOVE THIS SONG!!! Great reaction!! I’m guessing you like “Clockwork Angels” as much as “Permanent Waves”! Guess we’ll have to wait and see… I’ll be here!! Be well and God bless… from Texas!!
Neil and his fiłls😂🔥 Who does that? Don't give me some whipped answer about another fav drummer, No one does this. This is what makes him great, such imagination.
I agree with your take on Moving Pictures. I have always felt that Moving Pictures (1981) was a relative low point (compositionally and sonically) between Permanent Waves (1980) and Signals (1982), which is, I guess, a blasphemous thing to say in Rush circles.
Many CDs manufactured in Japan have 1 or more bonus tracks because they are more expensive to produce in Japan than to just import them from elsewhere. The bonus tracks encourage Japanese consumers to buy consider paying more for the domestically-produced CD, and tempt completists from elsewhere to buy a Japanese version. It props up the Japanese industry. Most of these tracks are live versions, B-sides, and unreleased tracks.
I agree PW is better than Moving Pictures + I think Natural Science is one of the best album closing tracks ever. Watching them play this live was always a highlight for me. It demonstrates everything that makes Rush great. Geddy’s vocals are in peak form here too.
Well, damn. Japanese release only? I bought this set when it came out and until now was unaware of “Force Ten” being a part of it in any way. And I have to say it….. my favorite version of that track to date is on “A Show Of Hands” so I’m really looking forward to this. I’m betting on huge bass and great production/mix and I’m prepared for a new favorite version. I hope I’m right! Lol. I’m also betting a lot of us old fans are in for a treat. It’s not often something like this comes along when you’ve been paying such close attention to a band for so long. Live Rush is the best Rush. I’m going to hammer that idea until Justin uses it. Lmao
Really powerful version. I didn’t see them on this tour and I can’t remember why. Nine times out of ten, Geddy’s little vocal improvs didn’t seem to enhance anything. Sometimes quite the contrary, like those frigging gospel vocal melismas he would get into at the end Vital Signs. If you ain’t Aretha, you might wanna hold back a little. 😄 This was a great performance, though. They were still firing on all cylinders.
🎶There are those who...🎶 stand by 2112, A Farewell to Kings, and Hemispheres as the "holy trinity" by the Holy Triumvirate. For me it will always be Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures, and Signals.
Your face through the entire thing says three things to me. 1. Your favorite Rush record is Permanent Waves? 2. You love Natural Science? 3. Rush was an incredible live band?
Hey teach so I've always said when they got that click going. You should make the album longer more in that mode. They could have had two great albums. Permanent waves and whatever you want to call it afterwards. Call it afterwards
So, you're not going to be covering the "Feedback" E.P.? It was what energized them enough to come back with "Vapor Trails" after years off following Neal's tragedies. Worth a listen, definitely!
I actually was disappointed that they skipped my favorite verse and the second guitar lead solo. It's still good but I miss the hyper- kinetic energy of the PEW Album and Tour Version, it was more of a Rush, no pun intended
Love this song. Love it live, but hate when they cut it shot by omitting the second guitar solo. I guess you have to adhere to local loud music time restriction laws?!🤷🏻♂️
They Changed The Song. The First Verse Was Repeated Twice . This Song Originally Has Two Guitar Solos. They Took Out The Second Guitar Solo Towards The Last Part Of The Song. The Rest Of Their Career They Never Played The Original Version. That's Not Good. 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔 Thumbs Down. Sorry! 👎👎👎👎👎
This song embodies everything that makes Rush who they are. Insane drumming, intricate guitar work, driving bass, smart lyrics and a plethora of time changes, add to that Geddys unique vocal style and this encompasses everything that makes this band a cut above. Quintessential Rush. 😊

the beggining of that song is ordinairy, but when they shift, its a blast.l.o.l, old rush will never die, rock history, masterpiece, 🎸🥁🎸
Neil`s percussion has always been my favourite thing. Next-level. This is a super-tight performance. Excellent stuff.
I get chills every time I hear this song to this day, as well as I finding myself head-bobbing and swaying to the grooves, riffs, and crazy drum parts that all seem to be just about perfect. ❤️🙏

A perfect Rush song…Alex needs lotsa love for this one. ❤
I still remember the first time I heard Permanent Waves. I was completely blown away.
Permanent Waves was the introduction into my RUSH obsession
@@destdeac mine was Exit Stage Left.
My favorite song on Permanent Waves after The Spirit of Radio!
Great reaction. It's crazy that we had to wait until Different Stages to get this song live (it was inexplicably not on Exit Stage Left or A Show of Hands). This song was one of the highlights when I last saw them, on the R40 show, along with Ben Mink joining them on stage for Losing It.
Amazing. Did you see them in Canada?

Probably my favorite Rush song. Has everything! And a challenge to play on guitar as well- but oh so fun!
Permanent Waves was always my fave Rush too. Every song from it still gives me chills every time.
Best track on that album 👍
A top 10 Rush song. Dare I say it’s better than everything on Moving Pictures. And I love MP.
Funny. Haha. ? I got stuck in an elevator yesterday. Saturday night. Calls made, etc. I found the music still played on my phone. Really, seriously, no kidding. What did I play first?

The last epic song of Rush, I love it
The day this record was released i skipped school drove the record store and bought it! I then went home sat back and was completely blown away!
So glad they extended the part @ 3:00
After watching you from the beginning I feel safe in assuming you would enjoy playing this song…that it would simply be a nice mix of challenge and fun. Appreciate you taking us along on this ride through their discography.
Geddy’s bass line in this song basically says “I like to play bass”
No doubt. Permanent Waves is a beast. Their best work. So many great albums but this one stands alone
Top 5 Rush song for me, it never gets old 🔥
What a stunning performance.

@@kennyplay5982 It's at about 6:30 in the march section.
“All these years. Geez. So confusing.”
Dude, you should consider trademarking that!

This song is a beast!
Permanent was the newest album after I became a Rush fan and what an album.
The second guitar solo is missing
The third movement “Permanent Waves” is shortened.
Great song. Great performance.
Love Love Love this song! 💖💖💖
Permanent Waves is up there with my favourites. Signals I really like except for Countdown.
This song represents the definition of prog-rock as well as what Rush are. It is just so PROGALICIOUS! A perfect intro.
