Stripped Screws In Hinge On Door

- a how to video....my first of many to come....looking forward to sharing!!!! This is not how I usually would do this fix but thought people would like the minimalist tool and cost way...I usually would use all power tools...drill, driver, oscillating saw...the oscillating saw works great cause you can stick dowel in jamb of door with glue on it and then cut flush..much quicker...
I have searched countless videos for this fix and each one had some crazy expensive fixes. This is the most minimalist and cost effective fix. Thank you sir.
Your Welcome!!!
Did this today on an exterior door. Drilled out top/bottom hinges with 3/8" bit and used a 3/8" dowel and pro-glue. David Mack makes it look easy and let me confirm... it is. Our house is from 1934 and we bought it in 2001. For 19 years I've dealt with a pretty crappy front shutting door but those days are behind me. Hinges are right and tight. Thanks, David. Game changer!
Your Welcome!!! glad I could help..thanks for watching
Best video tutorial on this subject so far. I'm out to buy some dowel now
+Tim Howell Thank You!!! Glad I could help!!! Thank you for watching!!!
walmart has some different size dowels for about a dollar a bag in their craft section.
Me too... Out the door to Lowe's
Definitely going to be fixing the door like this!! Thanks!! Love that I can actually learn to do this stuff on my own, rather than pay someone every single time.
Glad I could help!!
Thanks for showing this. It beats going to Home Depot and paying $10.00 for a pack of 4 "Screw-it-again" hole starters.
i've watched about 5 other videos and the fixes all seemed cheap or half-a$$ed to me. This is by far the best fix i've seen that also looks very sturdy. As a new home owner, this is exactly what i've been looking for!! Thank you.
+Corey Fernandez Your Welcome!!! Glad I could help...Thank You for watching and congrats on the new home...
My friend was having this issue with their front door. Thank you for this video, now the door is working brand new.
Your Welcome!!! Thank You!!!
That was possibly the best and clearest video I have ever seen on a door hinge fix. Really well done ...great job!
+John O Thank You!!!..
Good job. Plain and simple with no special tricks or tools.
Thank You!!!
We just used this tutorial to fix our door! Easy to follow for an amateur like us and our door seems like it’s solidly in place!!
Glad I could help!!!
You can also buy a box of pre-made dowels for $2 or $3. Great recommendation to use tape on the drill bit to prevent going too far into the wood.
Love the idea. Cuts out a step and you can have them ready for the next stripped out screw holes. And, you could probably also use the technique to fix furniture that is falling apart.
Great video. Followed these steps to fix the stripped screws on the hinges of an exterior door. To be sure, it took me a bit longer than the video. But I had most of the tools and materials on hand, and the result was great. Many thanks!
Your Welcome!!! Thanks for watching!!!
Of all the videos on how to do this fix, I found yours the best. Thank you very much.
Thank You!!!
You sir... are awesome. Thanks for making an easy tutorial that a legit repair and not a hack job. Off to the hardware store tomorrow!
Your Welcome!!! Glad I could help!!!
I just popped in some plastic drywall anchors, worked great
Thanks man great video, I can't wait to get started fixing my pick up truck door it's been loose for about a year and a half now.
Thanks for this video! The toothpicks worked just great!
Your Welcome!!!
Thank you!! This will help a lot with our annoying bathroom door that is bobbing around.
Your Welcome!!!
You're so great!! Thank you for confirming the correct way to repair my 80 yrs antique mahogany closet door. I paid 3x for no one repaired it the correct way I thought it should be with wood in the holes. If I do it myself I know it will be correct. PEACE
Congrats on your repair..glad I could help...
Very simple and strong fix. Thank you.
Your Welcome!!! Thank You!!!
Thank you for the easy and quick fix instructions...
Your Welcome!!! Thank You!!!
Wow! Thanks…I have a few hinges with same issue. Now, I can repair them correctly.🤗
Your Welcome!!!
Thanks a bunch I'm about to take care of this door very soon. It's the top hinge as well... i hope i don't mess this up.
Your Welcome!!!
never heard of dowels till now. tyvm.
Your Welcome!!!
assume,I didnt even think of that . Was thinking I'd have to change out door frame. Thank you
Your Welcome!!!
Loved it! Simple and straight forward!
First video i found and the last video i need.
Thanks!
Your Welcome!!! Glad I could help...
This is the way I have always heard to do this right using good yellow wood glue let sit for day then re pilot new hole.
Another way I thought was to use plastic molly anchor just tap it in.
Good idea how you fixed the issue though by not removing the door completely leaning the door at an angle without removing pin on bottom is putting stress on bottom door hinge screws as well screws in jamb that could easly crack wood & even twist hinge, I make it a practice & so simple just to pull all pins remove the door rather then taking the high risk of twisting bending bottom hinge or even pulling screws out & breaking the wood on door & jamb
Yes, that can happen..I believe I commented that you should remove the door unless you have three hinges...for the demonstration I did not to save the length of video. It did drop down more then I would have liked it to but the hinges on that door was quite sloppy...thank you for taking the time to watch and comment!!!
Thanks, this was easy and my bedroom door is now rock solid
Your Welcome!! Glad I could help..
Gulf tees people, keep gulf tees in your toolbox, get the two size gulf tees ( preferably hardwood ) so you can fix any size hole, and in cases where people put like five different size screws over the years, the gulf tees allows to start from scratch with fresh holes and all the same size screws again ; )
You're welcome!
Thanks man I have a few doors at home to do this to.
Your Welcome!!! Glad I could help!!!
Good solution to this problem. Here's another way: Remove the hinge screws one at a time. After removing a screw, with the hinge still in place held by the other screws, stuff the hole with as many toothpicks as you can (or a piece of dowel or a wooden golf tee, but no need to drill a pilot hole if you use toothpicks). Tap them in with a hammer to ensure the hole is stuffed full. Break off whatever remains outside the hole with a hammer or a utility knife. Put the screw back in. I would use a drill or an impact driver rather than a screwdriver, but that's just me. The toothpicks will fill the void inside the hole, the hinge will now be held on tight as a drum. Do the same with each hole one at a time. No need to remove the door from the frame. No need for a second person or "third hand" to hold the door. I had this recurring problem with my bathroom door. Every couple weeks I would have to tighten the screws on the hinge. After discovering the toothpick trick, I haven't had to touch it for 15 years.
Thanks, buddy. Great fix, great video.
Your Welcome!!!
Thank You!!!
nice work
Thank You!!!
Thanks I'm going to do this for my office door that fell off
+D-Nugget nice! Glad this could help..thank you!
Great job! Thank you.
Thank You for watching and commenting!!!
What would be the reason NOT to use something like a wall anchor instead?
You probably could but this way your bringing back essentially the same material that originally was there. Most plastic anchors will either slip in holes or when removing, stick to screw and just sit there and spin and then here comes the yanking…they also tend to strip out a lot easier then wood does..in the beginning, I commented on several other ways that I’ve seen and I feel that this is one of the ways that will hold up longer. I was just passing on information, that I at the time didn’t see on RUclips. Thank You for the question and watching my video!!! There is always different ways to something. I love to learn and will continue to pass on any knowledge that may help others.
Thank you great video
Your Welcome!!! Glad I could help!!!
Thanks, you have solved one of main problem.
Your Welcome!!! Glad I could help!!
So helpful!! Thank you!!
Your Welcome!!! Glad I could help!!!
what about longer screws?
Longer screws can work but if longer screws stripped out also then you will need to do something else…people tend to over torque the screws and then the wood just gives up on holding over time…
Please include the measurement of the dowel and the drill bit. Then we can do it easy.
Dowel will be same size as drill bit..anything 1/2” or under should be fine as long as it’s bigger then the already existing hole from stripped out screws..
Great. Thanks for sharing.
+Matthias Gattwinkel Your Welcome!!!
excellent video, but once dowels in door jam, what length screws: dowel length or longer?
You can use the original screw . The dowel just fills and replaces the stripped area that the screw could no longer hold onto to become tight...
Does this work for the door itself too? Mine is stripped on both sides 😢
Yes!!
Thank you!! I believe you saved my sanity (and marriage!) lol
David Mack/ Mackdfixings what if the door isn’t a solid would do, would it still be the same?
@@carolpierce2872 I'd also like to know. My husband said no... I'm tempted to try anyway... I'm going crazy not having a bathroom door 😭
Yes..make sure you use glue and let set up a little(10 minutes)...there is at least a inch of solid material running up the edges of the door even if it’s mdf..the glue will bind and adhere..
this was helpful. Why aren't you making more videos???
Thank You!!! I plan on making more but my life situation has changed some in the last couple years..I’ve moved a couple of times from different states. NY to SC to help and be closer to my parents then 6 months later had to move back to NY because my wife’s mother took a turn in her health. I broke my ankle and leg 5 months ago on the job and been slowly recovering from that..they say it’s probably gonna take a year or so to get back to mostly normal. I’m just getting off the crutches and or cane for most of my day but switch back to crutches at night cause my ankle and leg swells up. I had two surgeries on it with in 3 weeks. I got some new metal hardware in there now. I got some ideas for some new videos but definitely need to be more mobile then I’m at currently. I’m sorry for the long drawn out answer but definitely been side tracked the last couple of years and switching jobs also. Thank You for watching and taking interest in my videos. I did take a couple down also a while back. One just didn’t seem to be being watched and another was a review on a jig. I pulled the review to keep myself out of a situation I didn’t want to be in between two parties. I promise more will be on the way in the future.
Can i reuse the old screws to screw the hinges back in?
Yes, as long as they are in good shape!!!
Thank you
Your Welcome!!!....Thank You for watching!!!!
Very good. Thank you.
+Maurice Cardinal Your Welcome!!! Thanks for watching!!!
Hey david mack do u have any advice or tips on squeaking door hinges or can u upload a vid like this one on that topic ?
Advice on squeaky hinges I would say pull the pins and clean any dirt and grime(remove paint if any), then lubricate with a dry lube or a 3 in 1 oil(few drops).
Paint can be removed with acetone(nail polish remover).
I repair a lot of doors, I use chopsticks, free at your local asian restaurant
thanks
Your Welcome!!!
No safety glasses silly. Also, how does it work with really bunged frame.
I felt I didn’t need safety glasses for this. All should take the precautions for their own safety. If the dowel will hold tight into the frame once screw expands the dowel in the frame or when glue dries you should be good...thank you for watching and giving feed back and question! All is appreciated....
I'm trying to put the door back on and it wo t stay in place to screw it I'm I need help
A little cardboard, paper or something that can support the bottom will help out!!!
You can't just use longer screws?
+sheep friends you can if they grab the studding....people sometimes don't want miss matched screws or longer screws were used and no longer grab... Sometimes the shimming of the jamb may have the studding to far away...
You can use longer screws in the middle hole. The top and bottom holes on the hinge are closer to the edge of the 2x4 behind the frame and could vere away from the 2x4 and catch the drywall which will not hold
Thanks I was wondering why the middle screw would always grab better.
Can you Just come fix mine?😂
No help- I have no one and one of the screw is rusted flush with the hinge. It’s like it’s welded in place and the head is stripped. Please don’t tell me I have to remove the door it’s mostly clear glass, from 1900-☹️
Not sure how bad the screw is, or what tools you may have..sometimes smacking the back of the screwdriver with a hammer while turning(repeatedly) can help loosen..stores do have extractor kits where you drill the screw and use extractor..
Well, that's certainly one way to twist and damage your lower hinge. Always try to keep you door level when working on the upper hinge with wedges or a sturdy screwdriver under the handle side of the door.
lets blow the saw dust off after we have glued it. this is indeed the masterful ninjas secret to a snug bug.
Toooooo long.
Actually the best advice I would tell your readers is that you allow the glue around the dowel plugs to dry for a minimum of 12 - 24 hours before you drill them out - especially for heavy doors such as a front door. Reason: Titebond and other professional wood glue manufacturers recommend this. Why? Because as David just stated, it takes time for the wood glue to cure and become stronger than the wood itself. If you only wait 15-20 min you risk not only the newly installed plug to possibly push in when you drill into it, but even if that doesn't occur, if the glue is not allowed the 12-24 hours to dry, as you screw in the screw the plug itself could also spin in the hole it is filling while you're screwing in the hinge screws - especially if the pre-drilled screw holes are smaller than the screw itself which is normal. While installing hinges following the steps David gives is common practice, the homeowner needs to be patient enough to let the glue completely dry/cure and bond with the wood. There is no air deep in the plug hole, so the glue needs to dry chemically. Good steps Dave. But please emphasize the need for patience. LOL
I shoved some wood epoxy in the holes and waited 1h as per the manufacturer recommendation and it was still VERY SOFT - complete waste of f’ing time
We used to let huge live edge tables (with biscuits and clamps) cure with wood glue for
Try putting a wedge under the door before you remove the screws initially, the door will stay in place thru the rest of the repair. It frees both hands to better assist the dowel and screw insertion
It's a trick an old carpenter taught me years ago.
What do you recommend for a wedge for the door? I can not find anything g
@@slizardthelizard1988 Depending on the size of the door, I've used wooden wedges called shims in bundles at the home improvement stores. On larger heavier doors I've used log splitting wedges. Two large straight tip screwdrivers stacked works well too. Just use your imagination and you'll be surprised what you come up with.
Frank T Stets thanks
Some stores sell pump up air bags also! Anything around your house that you can put under there to hold it up...cardboard will even work...
David Mack/ Mackdfixings thank you 🙏🏾
I have been a contractor for over 20 years, learned a lot of really great tricks from RUclips over the years. But, you sir have hands down won the award for the best solution to a problem that I have ever seen!! I tried it today. Even the client's socks were even blown off. Thank you and I look forward to checking out your other videos. And, btw, I NEVER leave comments on RUclips! That's how happy you made me!
Glad I could help...always something out there to learn!!! Thank You!!!
If this is the first time you are having to tighten up a loose hinge, what I do is simply use much longer screws. Three inches long will work great and will screw right into the actual stud framing the door opening. That is the quickest way to do it.
This video really helped me!! Thank you. I just finished my door and I’m a 29 year old girl with no one I could call on. I went to Lowe’s and got all the supplies and bought a drill too! Thank you this was so easy and helpful! Greatly appreciated!!!
Your Welcome!!!
I am so glad this was on here! Thank you, as a single female with no brothers to help, it was up to me to do it and it worked like a charm!
Your Welcome!!! Glad I could help!!!
With no brothers to help I think that's very sexist you have no girlfriends that can turn a screwdriver or a male neighbor that you can depend on you go girl
@UCbwO9amEz4c_nPCkAkb-Hmw if u dont stfu u Democrat
I tried the toothpick fix from another youtube vid. Failed. I'll definitely give this a shot. Thanks Dave!
Thank You!!!
Tip: Use a wedge or shims to hold your door up when you remove the hinge screws, it's that "third hand" you need to help keep the door in place. Then you just move the hinge plate aside to do your work, don't remove the hinge pin. And, especially, don't put a lot of excess stress on the other door hinge, you're going to have to repair that lower hinge now that you've torqued it out of shape.
Tip #2: drill the dowel hole just smaller than the dowel for a snug fit, you won't lose your dowel in the hole. taper the dowel end to make it easier to start in the hole.
Kragh Hertel agreed :-). A self centering pre-drill bit is great, too.
Tip#2 was genius. Did this, with a little glue still, and I feel like it’ll be stronger because of it. Great advice!
And to the author, great video. Thank you for sharing!
Just moved into a rental property and all the doors are falling off and they won't fix it for me, thanks for the useful info. This is the most comprehensive and professional vid I've come across.
Your Welcome!!! Thank you for giving me your input. I’m glad I could help!
That fire extinguisher has been recalled by Kidde.
Ed Burch You’re that guy huh?
That's what they put on rental properties nimrod where do you put yours behind the stove
Good job
God bless you we need that video
If I have a hinge with 1 stripped screw hole that needs to be fixed but the other 2 are OK, will I still need to fix the other 2 once I remove their screws in order to remove the hinge or should I be able to reuse those screw holes?
Should only need to fix the one unless you strip out the others when putting screw back in..
Thanks Uncle Buck
Easy straight to the point, thanks man. Great video.
Your Welcome!!! Glad I could help!!! And Thank You!!!
Tell the wife u need a du walt drill to do the job ! Ha problem solved and bits
I have several kinds...I have 3-Milwaukee, 1-DEWALT, 2-Ridgid, and put a old porter cable at the road last week end...
I was one of those guys who would use matchsticks, toothpicks, golf tees. This way is far more effective.
I used golf tees as they were the exact diameter as the hole ..I scored them with a utility knife so they snapped off exactly at the right length after inserting with wood glue. Door works fine now , and it was a heavy front door with spring loaded hinges
That works also!!!
David Mack/ Mackdfixings Yes thank you for the video ! Gave me motivation to go for it
Your welcome! Glad I could help...
Thank you for watching!!!
Thanks. Straight and to the point . 😀😀😀
Thank You for watching!!! Glad I could help..
Cool. And an easy fix.
Yep!!
This was painful to watch but good job bro
Was my first video!!! The more I do them hopefully they will get better..lol..Thank You for Watching and commenting!!
My kids just broke the bedroom door and now I thought that was it was done for. I watched other videos but yours was the most helpful and straight forward. thanks bud..
Your Welcome!!! Glad I could help!!
If you do strip it out, do you just drill 3/8” again and repeat the process? I have a door that won’t close at the top. I can’t really adjust the screws on the hinge because the holes in the jam are stripped. I tried shimming the bottom hinge to try to make the door more square but now neither top or bottom will clear the jam. It’s really annoying.
Yes, just drill again and put new dowel piece in..
Try putting longer screws in first if the stripped screws are the ones that go into jamb, to see if you can catch studding...if you do and get nothing then drill and put new dowel piece in...
@@mackd654 my weekend project
David Mack/ Mackdfixings it worked!! The door closes perfectly now! Thank you so so much for the tip! I’m keeping these dowels on hand now as I redo every room of the house I just moved into!
$0.98 for the 3/8 dowel. Cheap and easy fix! Thank you!
Can I marry you? My door fell off completely (old house) Funniest thing you're going to see is a 5'2' woman trying to hold the door while fixing this sucker.
+Christine put a little something under the door on the handle side..makes it easier to balance and align hinges at correct height and angle while you get screws in...probably one of those heavy solid core doors in your old home also which are a little heavy to manipulate...
Funny . Like the parts where you disappear to get your tools.
Thanks for the tips bro
Your Welcome!!! Thanks for watching!!
nice!
Works great, thanks.
Your Welcome!!! Glad I could help...
Thank you! Just did the fix on my door.... worked great!
Your Welcome!!! Glad I could help...thank you for watching!!!
Thanks, going to give this a shot during the weekend.
Your Welcome!! Thank You for watching!!!
Great video! Our exterior door now closes with ease, without having to lift and push. Thank you!
+Justin Jewell Your Welcome!!! Glad I could help...thanks for watching...
super helpful explanation/teaching. 10/10 would recommend.
Thank You!!!
Perfect! I think I can do this myself!
Great video! Thanks a bunch!!
Thank You!!! Glad I could help!!!
This is what I needed. Tapped in the dowel... screwed the screws... and the door works! Subscribed and Liked!!!
Glad I could help!!! Thank You!!!
You’re an amazing teacher 🍎🙌🏽
how do you fix it if it is a hollow core door in a trailer? I have used dowel and wood filler system and it won't hold
If the door is that much damaged you will have to go with bigger dowels or you will have to cut out edge of door with knife and chisel..the front and back thin panels need to be carefully pried off at damaged edge and then remove the 1-1/8x1-1/8 edge and glue in a new piece that is made out of a 2x4 or similar wood..this will need a table saw to get correct sizing..glue and clamp into place and then reinstall..that work maybe not worth it so you can purchase a new hollow core slab for $30-50 and fit to frame..
You could also use toggle bolts that push through enlarged holes and the wings will catch the inside edge of side but you will need to switch the toggle bolt out to a beveled edge screw..
I’m assuming that it’s the door is damaged and not the frame(door jamb)???
Actually they are both damaged. I think my granddaughter was maybe swinging on the door. You know that there is no real wood in a trailer. I'm almost to the point where I might try gorilla glue. ;)@@mackd654
Mobil homes definitely have there issues with quality of the materials but, glue and wood should still attach to the mdf, cardboard, or other materials..if you want to try two part epoxy that squeezes out of a plastic syringe to mix..spread that around area with the dowels and let sit for a few hours..it will make it become brick hard...the epoxy is like 5-15 minute stuff but let cure longer..then reattached the hinges and it should take care of your issue..
Thanks for posting this. I ran into this problem today and this trick worked like a charm.
Glad It helped you!!!
