Rafi Saab is the only singer who ‘defined’ the concept of ‘playback singing’. Playback singing in cinema is a specialized genre, which Mohammed Rafi understood very well. That’s the reason when Rafi Saab sang for various actors he sang according to the actor’s speech delivery and and that’s why when one sees Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand, Shammi Kapoor and few others one feels that the actor himself is singing on the screen. True genius with divine voice and what a great human being Rafi Saab was.
This is just one aspect of amazing singing of Rafi Saab. There are all types of songs, from sad to happy, gazals, bhajans and many more different situations . Apart from film songs there are private and non film songs where we just listen to him with the awe! The most surprising and rather shocking thing is to hear in Piyushji’s talk is as if the giants like Naushad, Gulam Mohammed, Sajjad Husain, early Shankar Jaikishan, Madan Mohan and others had no role to play as if. In fact the truth is that both Anil Bishwas and Salil Choudhury being the great composers still could not handle the vast range of singing of the giant called Mohammed Rafi. It was their limitations not Rafi Saab’s. Also can’t deny some sort of jealousy for other composers. Anyway, the profound qualities of Rafi Saab’s singing doesn’t need these explanations.

Rafi was definitely ONE of the greatest semi-classical film singers. Please show me just ONE-SINGLE complete classical (CarnATic and/or Hindhusthaani) concert by the so-called LEGENDS in Indian film industry. Most are just SEMI-classical singers including Latha, Aasha, S. Jaanaki, SPB, Rafi, Sonu, etc.

S.D. Burman loved both the greats Kishorda and Rafi sahab equally.
My personal opinion is that Rafi Sahab's sweetest songs were composed by the great Sachinda for Dev Anand.

Please don’t underestimate music composers. Singers only paint some additions to a beautiful painting because music is like a painting and had already been laid out for the singer. The main foundation is of the music director and composer. The singer uses his voice to decorate. If the painting is poor you cannot make it excellent.

I had listened an interview of Mohd.Rafi sahab in which he told that all music director were his gurus, and he learnt from each of them. So every music director had an impact on his singing. But, everyone knows that he has heavenly voice and no one can be compared to him. He is above comparison. He is a gift of all-mighty god to us.

With due respect to both legendary composers, Anil Biswas and Salil Choudhary, it's not Mohd Rafi who was at the receiving end but these very music directors who got distanced from the hindi film industry by sidelining Mohd Rafi. No composer, film or film maker clicked without Mohd Rafi. Even the great OP Nayyar in a fit of rage dropped Mohd Rafi from his films for three years and in the process got wiped out from the industry. No one, just no one, regardless of his or her reputation is qualified to pass any adverse comment on the peerless Mohd Rafi. The only complete singer so far who ticked all the boxes is Mohd Rafi and no one, male or female, then or now or a century later can even come remotely close to our "Mahaan Bharat Ka Sabse Anmol Ratan - Mohd Rafi". There are many films in which Dada Burman has used only Rafi and no Kishore - as examples I can quote Pyasa (1957), Kagaz Ke Phool (1959), Manzil (1960), Kala Bazar (1960), Ek ke Baad Ek (1960), Tere Ghar Ke Samne (1963) Benazir (1964), Kaise Kahun ( 1964)etc. So how can we say that Dada Burman was not in primary favour of Rafi ? Rafi has sung many songs with special mellowed voice under Dada Burman like Tere Mere Sapne ab ek rang hai, Din dhal jaye, Mera man tera pyasa, Dil ka dard nirala etc. Burman knew how to use Rafi's voice most efficiently.

nailed by sharma g. i have been listening to Rafi sb for decades and always notice something special and different when he sings for Dev Anand but could not figure out why. now Sharma g has clarified the whole thing. as a die-hard Rafi fan, I can easily spot this difference in his singing.
As done by Anil Biswas ji and Salil Choudhury ji ,also In this video , the image of Rafisaab has been lowered in a roundabout manner. Efforts have been made to show as if Rafisaab was not at all a good singer before "Pyasa". We all respect Sr.Burman sahab for his voice, tunes and magnanimity. But we can't forget that apart from " Suhani raat dhal chuki " ,Rafisaab delivered excellent songs in Amber , Dastan , Deedar and above everything, in film Baiju Bawra. Who can forget "Wo duniya ke rakhwale " and Tu Ganga ki mauj ? These songs were tuned by great music director Naushad sahab .

Pyaasaa was 1957, Rafi Saab had huge hits and wonderful songs mich before that - be it Baiju Basra or CID or numerous other movies - most top hits through 50s and 60s were by Rafi Saab. This guy has tried to hide his poison pretty well. But in front of Rafi Saab these guys are very small. Listen to Manna Dey - he always said Rafi Saab was absolutely the best.

नहीं, आपने कदाचित समझने का प्रयास नहीं किया। ये शर्मा जी के अपने भी विचार हैं कि बर्मन दा से पहले तक रफी साहब रफ थे। क्या आपने 52 में आया गाना .. दिल में छुपा के प्यार का तूफान ले चले, सुना है। ये ओपी नैय्यर से पहले को स्टाइल है, जो नौशाद ने कई साल पहले शुरू किया।
मैं पंडित जसराज से मिला हूं। वो रफी साहब के बहुत बड़े फैन थे। उन्होने बरकत अली खान की बात की , जो रफी साहब के उस्ताद थे। उन्होंने भी रफी को 45 से पहले ही सराहा था।
क्लासिकल के सबसे बड़े उस्ताद मन्नाडे स्वयं रफी साहब को सबसे ऊपर मानते थे।

After this post, my respect for Salil Chaudhari and Anil Biswas has plummeted like hell. If you can't provide a plausible reason for DISLIKING someone, you don't deserve to occupy the said position and expect to earn respect. Anyone who hates/dislikes Rafi sahab CANNOT be a nice person per se.

But I think you are overreacting to what Anil Biswas & Salil Chowdhury said about Rafi Sir. It is well known that music directors of that era, geniuses as they were, were also extremely accentric and had strong likes & dislikes about singers.
I don't know what Anil Biswas and Salil Chowdhury said exactly, but both of them had moorings in Bengali music, and that style did not gel with Awadhi style.
Rafi Sir was still finding his feet in the late 40s when Anil and Salil were top composers. So it's no big deal that Rafi was not the favourite singer for their compositions. On the other hand, Kishore Manna and Hemant were all Bengalis and they fit perfectly with those two composers.
You would do well to know that Naushad, who did his best work.with Rafi Sir, never considered Kishore a singer. He even called him a nausikhiya. So camps and favourites happen in this business.
As Peeyush said, after initial hiccups, SD Burman became extremely fond of Rafi and they created many timeless classics.
For me though, there will never be another Rafi. He was God's own voice !

Naushad composed Baiju Bawara. Shabab. Deedar. SD has played a role, but I feel exageration. This bengali gang was nervous of Rafis' potential. They somehow tried to tame Rafi. But Naushad, SJ, SD, Madan Mohan, OP fully stood with Rafi.

Disagree to a great extent. Technically and respectfully Burman dada was too great, but also Madan Mohan and SJ and all others were too great. And we love, respect and adore all those giants!
But Burman dada was himself a rough singer, how could Rafi a rough singer!!!
It is universal that "Every Music Director teaches Every Singer how to sing". But the things here said in the video are out of proportion, biased and ill intended.
(i) At that time low pitched songs were popular, thus singers like Sehgal, Mukesh, Talat, Hemant were popular. The thing is that the artificial nasal singing of Sehgal and Mukesh can lead to low pitch, but though Rafi could had used that, but he almost all the time did not prefer nasal singing. Even Kishore at that time used (or had to use) nasal singing to sing those low pitched songs. Talat had natural tendency for singing low pitched songs. Rafi developed his own style. Even the popular story that he copied Durrani, is not true, he was quite different from Durrani.
(ii) Manna was already an exceptionally outstanding singer.
(iii) As far as modulation is concerned OP most of time used a far great modulation in the voice of Rafi not SD, e.g. 'Hai Duniya Usi Ki' song.
(iv) It is exaggerated to say ‘Rafi copied Geeta Dutt’. If the Music Director is same, then it is obvious both the co - singers will be heard similar, what is the great deal about this!

But before that Rafi had already developed his own style:
1) Kahaan Jaa Raha Hain (Seema, 1955 - SJ)
2) Aaja Ke Intizar Me, Jane Ko Hai Bahar Bhi (with Lata Mangeshkar - Halaku, 1956 - SJ)
3) Sun Sun, Sun Sun Zalima, Pyar Humko Tumse Ho Gaya (with Geeta Dutt - Aar Paar, 1954 - OP)
4) Udhar Tum Haseen Ho, Idhar Mein Jawan (with Geeta Dutt - Mr. & Mrs. '55, 1955 - OP)
5) Aankhon Hi Aankhon Mein (with Geeta Dutt CID, 1956 - OP) {See the modulations here also}
Naushad had already used Rafi successfully before Pyasa.
As the time and style changed, Mukesh, Talat, Hemant, Manna all were shadowed down by Rafi, except Kishore, as both were equally good. Thanks to SJ and OP.
Rafi justified the difficult compositions of SD like "apni to har aah". We can not imagine any other singer could have sung this, except Manna to a great extend. Thus, in conclusion, we should not compare and demean the great artists!

It was quite apparent that Salil could never actually grasp the genius of Rafi. Surprising that a great calibre like him was unable to "like" Rafi's voice. Maybe one reason is that Salil's composition, while rich in variety, width, sweetness and an incredible knowledge of world's classical and folk music lacked a certain emotional depth we frequently find in SDB, Roshan, Naushad and Madanmohan.
Rafi sahab was like water - He took the shape and quality of the vessel - whether it is music director or actor - he surrendered himself.
Naushad - he made him a classic singer.. O P Nayyar's contribution was the most I believe - He made him to sing peppy, light, joyful and tehrav songs.. S D Burman made him to sing with simple attitude.. Khayyam taught him to sing ghazals and Madan Mohan did wonders with him,, Roshan made him perfect in qawwali, Shankar Jaikishan taught him to sing like western singer..
