    I never thought I'd have the patience for smocking, but recently I have discovered that with hand sewing, it's all about the process, not the destination! Thanks for the tutorial.

      I absolutely love smocking, I'm still in the practicing stage but I'm hoping to incorporate it into a caftan I'm making for my Mum. It's very relaxing (although I cheat and use those markers that go away with heat or water to help keep my lines straight).

    Such wonderful demonstration. I was checking online to purchase a smocking pleater machine, gosh the price is high, only put hope on second hand one now, but not much information found.

      Look for a video about preparing the fabric for smocking. You make parallel rows of gathers and in each row, each gathering stitch is directly below the one in the previous row.

      You’d use the shirring technique if you want to use elastic.

    Should the pleated(gathering) threads be removed after the smocking?

      No one seems to have answered this. YES. The gathering threads are removed after embroidery otherwise you don't get the elasticity that was the original purpose of smocking

      I was taught at school by a very very experienced needle woman and we worked left to right. I think it's what works for you really
