Players like Doncic have a type of athleticism that is tough to measure. Hand eye coordination, lateral agility, and footwork are tough to get metrics on. When you combined those traits with his size, he is an elite athlete. Straight-line speed and vertical leap are easy to measure, but don't necessarily translate to production. Another great video by the way.

@@Oncopoda You're not necessarily wrong. There are certain traits you see in black players that aren't as prevalent in white players, and vice versa. Explosiveness is more visually apparent than the traits I mentioned and seen more often in black athletes. It seems like there has been an influx of white players in the NBA lately. It would be interesting to see if that is true, or it just seems to me to be that way. And if it is true, is it because talent evaluators are picking up on the traits I mentioned?

True. Durability and longevity is different for everyone. As great as Larry Legend was, sometimes he was too stubborn and sustained injuries he could/should have prevented. I know modern medicine is great and conditioning is wonderful but even the the most durable of elite athletes are outliers. Lebron is one of the few pushing 35 and keeping up with the kids. I think Luka needs to develop his power game and continue to hone his craftiness. He will never have a first step to just blow by defenders but he can create enough for opportunities to absorb contact and finish which I don’t see him do enough. He def has the frame for it, now it just a matter of chiseling it out. I’m optimistic because he’s only 19yo and has plenty of time to develop on that end. If he doesn’t do that, then his ceiling will dramatically be reduced.

    Great video.
Just on the 3rd play, not only does he do what you mentioned, but he jump carries/steps, the ball, over the defender, catches the help defender hip on his left, thereby preventing him from interrupting his play. It's pretty basketball.
However, I wouldn't agree he has 'below average athleticism'. He's stronger and more athletic then what you perceive on video.
He wouldn't average a triple double alone, on BB IQ.
p.s. Sorry for all the edits. Since Luka came off of winning the EuroLeague, being MVP and training with the national team, he had no break, before joining the NBA, that's why Rick (coach of mavs) and strength and conditioning staff, said, take time off, just play how you want to play this rookie here. Next year, we can start on adding strength and different skills, but for this year, we gonna chill.

I agree, for now. I'm a HUGE Bird fan, but I'd put 19-year-old Luka ahead of 19-year-old Larry. Luka was playing high-level pro ball at 15.
We'll see what Luka's play is like in 3-4 years. He has drive, ambition, and a strong work ethic. I'm looking forward to watching him develop.
When Luka reaches his prime, will he approach Larry Bird level skill and success? I don't know, but I sure hope so. That would be awesome to watch.

'Chubby' is a useless metric, and an inaccurate description of Luka, even at the beginning of the season.
As far as work ethic, Luka has improved in all aspects of the game throughout his brief time in the NBA. That doesn't happen without hard work.
As shown in the video, at 19, he's already an elite player in several categories, close to James Harden (reigning MVP) in step-back 3-pointers.
He's already had 3 triple doubles.
My man Bird was a freshman/sophomore in college at 19. I believe he would have been able to compete in the NBA at that age, but I don't see him dominating as Luka has. There's no way to know for sure, and I haven't seen much video from that time of Bird's career, so that's just my educated guess.
Time will tell. I'm not saying he'll be as good as Larry Legend (my favorite player ever), but based upon his production and improvement so far, it's possible.

Luka blew KD out that night. Klay,Iggy,KD they were hopeless that night. Luka was mad about tanking. He will be a monster and can close strong at the rim and does it in practice but in games last year got ZERO love from the ref.s. He blocked Lebron james twice on the same play and made LJ so mad he went off and played way beyond his season stats and then got the groin pull the next game.
