- What's it like to be a young person in Germany? What do German teenagers get up to in their free time? And who are their role models? Rachel finds out more in this week's Meet the (young) Germans - and welcomes a special guest, German TikTok star Younes Zarou!
Rachel moved from the UK to Germany in 2016. As a relative newcomer she casts a fresh eye over German clichés and shares her experiences of settling into German life. Every two weeks she explores a new topic - from unusual bans to meaty cuisine or haunted castles. This week: Young people in Germany.

Were there any surprises in this week's episode? Let us know!
I was surprised! 😁
Those are Germans - there are no surprises with them.
I was surprised to hear that Facebook is not a popular social media in Germany!
Young people in bosnia espatiali 14-20 yr olds smoke, drink and are opsesd with games and phones
I was glad to find out that German teens care about the environment and politics (to some degree). The NFL fan likes the same team and star as I do!
No matter how kind you are, German kids are Kinder.
Hahahaha

@@SlushGamerLP it's a play on words because "kinder" is the German word for kids

No young person could ever figure out how that Jugendwort des Jahres is chosen - when i was in school that competition would usually be the first that we learn of these words
Maybe now that young people actually get more of a say in it, we will be better informed on youth speak :D
Also, „Gammelfleischparty“ was pretty surely inspired by one of the „Gammelfleischskandale“ during those years... not the youth’ fault, someone just made fun of it.
Yeah those words used to be so foreign to us young people, like a couple years ago when "smombie" was elected, nobody i knew had ever heard that word before, but i feel like recent winners are more accurate. Like "lost" and "Ehrenmann/Ehrenfrau" or just "Ehre" get used a lot where I am from and "I bims" I feel like was more of a subculture but not unheard of. They're getting much better
It's weird how they basically used to make up all these Jugendwörter. No one ever used these. All these words sounded really ridiculous to everyone. But most of them stuck. Like "hartzen" for example.

Can't help watching videos about Germans and wondering what the heck is going on. The presenter needs to come with a warning that her witty style might cause a mild addiction to all things German. Well done Rachel, you are brilliant.

0:39 "Their stress levels rise when it comes to school" "German kids seem to be graded constantly"
Meanwhile in Asia:
*not able to scream because you are dead inside*
I learn to be quiet and walk away if my Asian parent started to say a rather offensive things about me in an argument. I know they don't mean it and it's because they are already stressed out. If that could help them let off the heat, so be it. I'm grateful I still have my parents.
Don’t underestimate German schools. I went to school in Japan and in Germany and I personally was twice as stressed in Germany than I was in Japan. I also noticed my classmates in Germany being more stressed.
Well as a German 15 year old I would like to say, that because we normally get graded every week or so and because one year of online school / lockdown all our "Klassenarbeiten" have been pushed back further and further. Meaning when the lockdown ends we will have to write about 10 major tests in one or two weeks. And since the teachers need to evaluate us on our work in school this is the only chance meaning if you get a bad grade there is no balancing out, it's all or nothing now.
Very stressy :(

"Drinking has reduced" maybe in the urban regions.
There's a German saying: Trink 3 Bier in der Stadt und du gilst als Alkoholiker, trink 5 Bier aufm Dorf und du bist der Fahrer.
And I can say that's true 😂
Ah interesting, unfortunately there is no distinction between city and countryside in the stats I saw - but that would be interesting to find out!
Agreed. I grew up in the “Speckgürtel” so I experienced both sides a bit and I’d say my friends from the country side started drinking earlier and heavier stuff than my friends from the urban areas.
True, when you live in a rural area, there's not much else to do, so no wonder alcohol and lately weed are so popular ...
Do you know the definition of an alcoholic? It's someone who drinks as much as you do but you don't like them.
Exactly. I'm one of those rare persons that don't like to consume alcohol.
The youth word just startet to be somewhat relatble since 2k19 i guess.
Anything before that was simply unknown to anybody and labled as being a word of the youth - which it wasnt.
Yeah, "lost" seems to be valid!
that's true! I work with young people and before 2019 even the teens hadn't heard of the youth word before.
Because it was started as a marketing joke from a publisher. Young peoples suggestions were only taken in the last years, I think :)

I am from India. I am 17. I admire the fact that German youth has decreased the consumption of alcohol and cigarette. In our country the age limits are almost same apart from alcohol. Here, the young people like us are too much focused with education and career which is increasing the stress level. Till age 20, at least they remain dependent on their parents and are close enough to them. However the hobbies and most used apps are all same. 🙂🙂

German youngers sound pretty inspired. :)
I think as part of globalization, young people around the world are thinking more and more similar.
The main difference with my country (Argentina) is that they are probably under more pressure, because the economy is bad, and are worried about global and everyday life things at the same time. So, the topic of mental health had become popular. And the only heroes in this mess are memes.
The pure join of memes can compensate the fears of ur countries economically development? :o
It can’t compensate at all, but by laughing from time to time decreases the stress levels and it helps to think differently for a moment. It is good to avoid the “burn out” just all the time worrying.
"Gammelfleischparty" was the term of the year 2008. Half of the youth of that year is already 30 itself. You don't have to feel that bad Rachel.
I love this series so much! Rachel you should be the host of more formats like this 🙂
Rachel on a trampoline while maintaining her TV presenter persona was funny and surreal ❤️👍🇬🇧
Hey Rachel Stewart
I am a German 18 years old man, and i want you to know, that the "youth word of the year" was first elected by the people in 2020. previously it was determined. Thes old "youth words of the year" often had no support by the german youth. The german kids laugt over the words and there was a big lack of understanding. So it is obvious, that you don´t liked the word from 2008.
This year is the first year that teenagers can actually nominate the words themselves instead of voting from a pre-chosen collection of words. So what german teenagers did was to nominate completely random and partly nonsensical words without any meaning at all. For example, "mittwoch" (wednesday) or "geringverdiener" (person with low income). Oh and of course there's "sus"
As an American who has been in prison, I am interested in if crime among Germanys Youth is High?
Love the longer format. ❤️
Kudos to this Meet the Germans Euromaxx series, presenter is spot on plus the editing team do a great job!

Something I'd like to add are mopeds. Because we can only drive cars at 18, mopeds (125ccm motorcycles) which you can drive at 16 are extremely popular. Especially on the countryside.
And thats another thing. Youth in the city is quite a bit different than on the countryside.

The pandemic made one thing pretty clear: Younger people - to be more specific: those who are not allowed to go to an election yet - are basically nonexistent to the politicians. Billions for Lufthansa, but not a single air filter - recommended by almost every scientist - for schools. Supplying every school with such a filter system in Germany would've cost a sixth of what Lufthansa got with the first support package. "Protect and support is still the motto in air traffic" quote of Andreas Scheuer, Federal Transport Minister. What did the politicians say about the air filter systems for schools: Too expensive.
To bring it into perspective: Spahn always says he is confident to be able to make "everyone" in Germany an offer for the vaccination by the mid of this year...to this day, there is not a single vaccine available in Germany that is approved for children...so much for the "everyone".
Last year the word "Hurensohn" was the most voted for Youth Word of the year, but since its an Insult it was cut from the competition.
Ma'am I really like you the way you present the topic is marvellous and I am planning to study in Germany for master's. Love from India ❤️
Its good to see our youth do so well. When I was young it wasn´t cool to like your family. All we did in most of our free time was playing video games and drinking.
It's pretty much the same now minus the video games
It's funny that the people who coined the word in 2008, are most likely over 30 now
There's no escaping the Gammelfleisch stage of life 💃
I'm pretty sure they've already been over 30 back in 2008, the youth word of the year was never voted on by young people and didn't resemble words teenagers actually used until 2019, usually no one had even heard the word before (let alone used it).
I’m an 18 teen year old from Scotland, UK and was surprised that consumption of alcohol has decreased by so much in recent years in Germany, do not feel like that is the case here, where it is very common and if you don’t get drunk, not as popular.
It is the same in Germany.

Where I am from (Northern part of Germany) the drinking has most definitely not decreased haha. If anything it increased but the aspect about smoking is definitely true. And you have to separate Dorfkinder from Stadtkinder because the people from the Dorf love to get drunk and drink far more than people from the city

»Gammelfleischparty« is so brutal. I feel like I've aged out of being nasty to order people, at 24 lol.
The term actually has some recent history. Between 2005 and 2006 there were several scandals, primarily in regards to döner meat being severely out of date in a lot of places. I think it all came from the same company, after the different local stores fought a hefty price battle, with a döner kebab sandwich being offered for as little as 1€.
I really appreciate that lost is the winnner of 2020😂 Especially during the first and second lockdown we had to teach the subject material to ourselves. Everything we were supposed to learn in school had to be done at home and was required in the "Abitur". So we laughed at ourselves and said "we are so lost. how are we going to get our Abitur in 2021?" Hi.. I would like to see how much Germans think about the Philosophers, physicists and mathematicians. Is it something that the general population care about, do they understand the importance of these, etc.
There is a BBC Scotland documentary on James Clerk Maxwell "The man who changed the world". In this documentary a professor asks Scottish people if they could recognize who he was, and sadly there was no one who could.
