Normally, using leader on blue coin (going first in round 1) is bad because leader ability can be saved as carryover for future rounds. And on blue coin, your opponent has the option of letting you overcommit and passing and losing the round while keeping one extra card in hand. When you are red coin, using leader is not as bad because it can help you win the round on even cards.
