    I'm almost 26 years old and working an overnight security guard job and wanting to do more with my life. I didn't fit in with how things were taught when I was in school, and dropped out of high school. I was homeschooled from 6th to 8th grade so when I came back to the public school district they threw me into algebra 1, and unsurprisingly, I failed it 3 times. Now here I am again, learning on my terms, and so thankful that this free resource exists. Like Galileo said, "Mathematics is the language with which God wrote the Universe." It belongs to all of us and I'm proud of anyone else here trying to learn even if it isn't intuitive to them. Keep going!

    Hi Sir, I just want to point out at 05:40, -2³ is not the same as -2 * -2 * -2. Since it was not on parenthesis, just so not to confuse others. Thanks for being my teacher. Please keep it up!

    • @sethlawson8544
      @sethlawson8544 3 года назад +1

      Hi Oscar, I know the rules and jargon can get confusing! When a number has a minus sign by itself, it is a negative number. I can see why it might be easier for a beginner to evaluate expressions such as -2 with parentheses around the expression so that it's clearer, but it isn't necessary and Khan wasn't wrong to omit them. Infact, you'll probably never see it the other way for an expression like that, just because the minus sign must belong to the 2 and it must be the same as (-2)³. You also don't need parentheses between -2*-2*-2 because it doesn't matter what order you do the multiplication in since they're all -2.

    You've got to put the -2 in scopes to emphasize that the power of three acts upon both the minus and the two, even though both options result in the same answer in this case.
