Shoukry meets Salva Kiir

    Egypt's Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry met with Sudan's President Salva Kiir and his Foreign Affairs Minister Martin Lomuro in the South Sudanese capital Juba today.
    STORY-LINE:
    The Egypt Air plane taxis on the tarmac. It is carrying the Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry.
    Officials wait by the runway in the capital, Juba, and soon Shoukry disembarks, ready to meet the president.
    Salva Kiir and Shoukry embrace and shake hands. According to Egypt's Foreign Affairs Ministry, they discussed "the overall bilateral relations and means to develop them in all fields, as well as a number of regional issues of common interest."
    The Ministry also reports that Shoukry presented Kiir with a letter from the Egyptian President, "conveying his regards and appreciation to the South Sudanese President for his efforts aimed at achieving stability and development in South Sudan."
    Then both delegations head to the meeting room.
    Shoukry says the talks are "developing our relations in solidarity with the people of South Sudan and showing Egypt's willingness to continue with its efforts to support the stability of South Sudan."
    During the meeting a memorandum of understanding is signed, thought to be on the establishment of what the Egyptian Foreign Ministry called "a political consultation mechanism between the two countries."
    South Sudanese Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs Martin Lomuro praises Egypt for its support of South Sudan.
    "It was Egypt that led the African bloc in the Security Council to defeat the draft resolution intended to impose an arms embargo on South Sudan. Egypt remains committed to ensure the success of this young nation," he says.
