    Those little "Easter Egg" mini wingfoots on the upper sidewall serve a purpose. They correspond to the location of the treadwear indicator bars in the tread pattern to see how far the tire is worn down. (Some other tires will use a triangle instead of a wingfoot.)

    i got a set of originals mounted on new wheels at walmart. walmart didn't have a adapter to balance the tire. i thought it was going to be a bad ride home unbalanced. i was wrong. 20000 miles later and i don't have a single weight, i never balanced them. no vibration at all. best tire ever.

    If you do mud a lot, get MT's. This looks like a great all round tyre for most people. Snow is something a lot of people in USA will drive in on a daily basis. Wet roads is my concern as mine are on a daily driver, see's mud maybe once a year. I'm more sand/rock 4 wheeling.
    Still, it looks good but for now...AT3W Falkens will do me, they are nice and quiet too.

    I personally swear by Dura Tracs. I worked at Les Schwab for 15 years and have seen just about everything out there. I live in east Idaho and my main hobby is snowmobiling, but I also hunt/fish/camp/shoot...anything outdoors basically and I've never found a tire that did so much, so well. I drive an F150 and with my sled in the back, I can conquer the worst that Island Park and W. Yellowstone has to offer. Once this 3rd set wears low, I WILL BE getting this updated tire. Yes the BFG AT3 road a little better, but that's not important to me at all. What's most important to me is winter traction and the BFG as well as the Toyo's don't hold a candle to the Dura Trac's traction. The 3 sets I've had have all worn like iron, no cupping or feathering, but I probably pay more attention to my tires than your average consumer. The Baja Boss' and the Falken At3 are also strong considerations as some of my buddies swear by them (especially the Falken), but I'll be a Dura Trac guy for years to come. SO GLAD they didn't change too much of the original design!!

      I’m thinking about trying the Baja boss at. It looks like it would eat the wild peaks. But considering the duratracs as well. Gonna try something other than a mud tire and hope I don’t regret it. Drive mostly on pavement unless hunting. But do drive on construction sites regularly.

    I ran load E Duratracs in 33” on my Tacoma with a lot of extra weight from winch/plate bumper/sliders and put 90k miles on them and they had minimal wear, and were great on rocks, snow, sand and gravel. They weren’t noisy on road either. Never had so much as a flat. They still had over 50% tread remaining when I took them off. I only changed them because they were ten years old. Didn’t want to risk dry cracking on something used for towing and off roading. Replaced them with a new set of Duratracs. Then they came out with the Kevlar like 6 months later.

    Thanks for the video. I'll likely run some RTs on mu XJ. Ran a set of Kevlar Duratracs on my XJ 2 sets ago, (got new wheels with crappy ATs on them, but I'm too cheap to let tires go to waste) and am running Kevlar Duratracs on my 150 currently in NorCal. Really have enjoyed this tire for years on two different trucks. Finally someone else says it, the Duratrac was the OG hybrid tire. I really can't think of a time I wished I had KO2s over the duratracs, but I never had sidewall issues with these. If this newer RT tire drives better on rode, I'm sorry to make you all mad but why spend money on a KO3 and wait 5 million years for your tire size. The Duratrac RT and Falken AT4W has you covered today for less monies.

  • @Jason-bd5iq

    Mickey Thompson ATZ was the first hybrid tire which since the introduction of low rolling resistance tire’s specifically for EVs and hybrids have now taken the name RT(rugged terrain).

    I’ve had the Duratrac RT on my Tacoma for about 7k miles. No chipping yet, but I haven’t abused them offroad much. In the snow of NW IA they performed fantastic last winter. Better than the OG Duratrac IMO and the Kenda Klever RT that they replaced. I think overall it performs better 98% of the time than the old ones. The other 2% is mud, but I will avoid mud at all costs, it’s just nasty. lol

    • @Harry_Gersack
      @Harry_Gersack 19 дней назад

      Oh really? I only know the old ones and I'm surprised you say the new design is better in the snow. Just by looking at them my guess would've been they're not as good as the old design, in terms of offroad performance.
      I would've guessed the old ones are better in really deep snow and the new ones better when there's (a thinner layer of) snow on the road.
      Say what are your exact conditions when driving in the snow? How deep? What's underneath? And is it more powdery or sticky snow?

    • @cpftank09
      @cpftank09 19 дней назад

      @@Harry_Gersack in really deep fresh powdery snow like mountain trails, I’d say they are a little worse. It’s likely splitting hairs though. But the snow you run into on the road, even fresh snow, I’d say they’re as good or better. I live in NW IA so we see a good combo of powdery snow when it’s frigid out and wet snow when it’s warmer. The new RT’s seem to handle the day to day snow storms, packed snow, slush and patchy snow better. Though IMO, if the original Durtracs are significantly cheaper in the same size, I don’t know if it’s worth the extra money for the new ones? Up to you on that one.

    I've been waiting for this video. Thank you! I currently have DuraTrac tires on my 2012 Chevy Silverado 1500 4WD Crew Cab LT Z71. I've had them for 3 years now. Perhaps next year, I'll get the DuraTrac RTs installed. I bought my DuraTrac tires after the original Wrangler Fortitude HTs wore out from the 2018 / 2019 Silverado LD Z71 take-off wheels and tires that were installed on my truck when I bought it used as a one-owner dealer trade-in. I liked the Wrangler DuraTrac tires because they were OE on the new Silverado Trail Boss.

    I can confirm the new RT captures & spits rocks a lot more than the previous version. Duratracs on F150 since 2011 (among many other brands - always back to Duratrac), on F250 since 2020, changed to Duratrac RT in April 2024.

  • @velvanae
    @velvanae 2 месяца назад

    The old Duratracs were also great on slick rocks, the extra siping on the RT should also help a great deal more. Mud is a tricky subject, you have regular mud, then you have Red Clay, Gumbo, and other sticky mud. If the latter ones are packed well and somewhat dry to damp it is almost like slick pavement (Extra siping will help there as well) But if it's soft that is a horrible mess, which is why the old gumbo mudders, super swampers, and ground hawgs were made extra wide gaps to sling that stuff out. It would seem to me those treads would hold clay and such better and cause issues, but then again I never ran anything like that in mud at all, so I have no idea what it will do. Anymore I am more interested in foul weather traction, and having enough weight in the back of the truck where it don't get squirrelly on me in those conditions.

  • @prestondeters5093

    They should have changed up the compound. The Duratrac is extremely susceptible to tread chunking and chipping. Hopefully, the reinforcement will help with the terrible cupping and feathering issues.

    Great information. i have a set of the older duratracks that now has 45k miles and although there is still almost 50% tread depth left, the road handling and noise is now terrible.
    So, the questions for the new ones is, how will they hold? I see the logic behind the changes, but when it comes to the sipping, the old problems will persist as the tire wears. The sipping is only in the first 3-4/32's and after that you lose 50% or more wet and snow traction. Not really a concern on gravel and pure off-road, but you still need to get to the trails and back and road performance after 20k miles will continue to be an issue. What is the purpose of a 50k warranty in this situation? The tire is not worn in the empirical sense, but it will have lost most function at half life, and that is a serious concern for those that use it on roads for 80% or more of the time.

We exclusively used Duratracs, they were an absolute nightmare! Constant uneven wear, constantly out of balance which made me have to rebalance every time vehicles came in for an oil change, 3K miles, ridiculous! Not a deal breaker but you definitely want mud capability when it's encountered on the trail. The rest of the features like added siping, tread reinforcement, etc is enough road improvement that they didn't need to mess with the air gaps.

    I've been running the original Duratrac tires for ten years. One of my favorite attributes is how they whine during cornering. I take turns a lot harder than the average driver. BFG AT's would just lose traction without warning. The Duratrac's would howl and slowly let go at the traction limit. The predictable feel and communication are more important to me than peak grip. I hope the new Duratrac's have similar corner manners.
    Most of these tire reviews focus on the mud, snow, and rocks. The reality is, most people are driving on pavement most of the time. I would like to see reviews of taking these tires to their limits in various conditions.

      I have a set of the originals on my '03 TJ, and am on my second set of originals on my 5th Gen 4RUNNER. I have about 10 years experience with the tires. In my previous life, I ran automotive repair shops for a prominent local business. I have never been a Goodyear guy. I was a Bridgestone lover at heart for the sticky rubber and good wear, which at the time, was the opposite of Michelin, BFG, and Goodyear. It took a lot of research and video dissecting (Jeep forums are great for tire video) for me to even get close to purchasing a Goodyear.
      They are loud. I don't care, but it may be a factor for some. My Jeep is lifted, the tires are 33x1050, and they still have saved me from wrong way drivers during snowstorm on 3 different occasions - that's a lot of snow and slush to push. My 4RUNNER is lifted with Eibachs, which make it more capable, but a better daily driver. I cam be as spirited in dry as I wish, and I still rule the deep snow. These tend to flat spot overnight, but if you've had experience with some 2000 era high performance tires, that's nothing.
      The fact that the OGs had holes for studs set them apart. Also, if you look at the vertical length of the center trad block, you can see that they disperse water and slush well, which in an emergency you'll appreciate. I will say, I like the new sidewall blocks, as that is what a tire with so many advancements over it's competition when it came out should be fitted with. More sipes are good, as I never understood the underrepresentation on the OGs. I don't like the Chile thing. I get it, but as a premium tire, I expect to pay, and I'd rather pay Joe than José. I love all races, but I hate the global economy.
      In short, the Duratrac was a Juggernaut, and I am sure that any changes they made will benefit more users. The issue for me is, that most of those folks don't drive what I drive, or they way that I drive. I guess we'll see in 4 years when I need a new set of tires...

    I appreciated this video. I owned the old duratracs and found them loud but much better in snow than ko2's. However, they wore badly and cupped in around 30k. Alignment and improper rotation may have been the cause, not sure. One thing I find with these tire review videos is that people rarely mention slush, that dreaded point at which snow starts to melt due to salt. This condition is my biggest concern. I look at my old mud tires on a retired 5th wheel. They were not better than my open range all terrain or my back country at2 dean tires. Grass, gravel, log roads. At2 and now 3z or 4z would be better than 100% smooth big block monster mudders. They were pitrun failures. Go all terrain to get back home with that venison safely kidderz!!!

    Again.. I’m not buying a foreign tire from an American company that keeps sending jobs overseas. That why I buy Nitto, Toyo, or Yokohama which are foreign companies that have made the US their home, creating large numbers of US jobs and major investments into the US economic success. Yokohama makes most of its off road tires in the US. BFG (Michelin) also have invested huge amounts into the US.
    Goodyear will probably have no tires made in the US in 10 years.

Gave me a tough time on yansing gulch and Holy Cross in Colorado. Planning to switch to a full mud terrain in the future for the best off-road performance and then possibly switch back to the duratracs in the winter since they do so well onroad snow. Went from the old duratrac to a maxxis razr at. It was a very cheap 35x12.5 compared to the other well known brands in the US. Literally saved $100 a tire compared to the big names these days like ridge grappler or Mickey T Bajas. I picked them up cuz the Aussies swear by maxxis and they know a good tire brand. So far they have been way better than the OLD duratracs at pretty much everything. Now it has me wondering how they stack up against the new duratracs. Not that I have any regrets, I never get the same tire/brand a second time in a row. I always try something different.
