    very nice video, very nice and appropriate music. What a nice countryside it is, somewhat unchanged since 50 years it seems, but so few cattle to be seen, although there is a plenty of grass…

    Beats more road building. Far more sustainable & allows time for travellers to chill out & enjoy the experience of travel through the beautiful countryside.

      I remember the Motorway building boom in the early seventies; the first since the M1 in 1959. Everywhere I travelled there were these immensely wide carvings up of the landscape, far wider than a two track rail line and no great protests or talk of tunnels and green corridors then!

    Will this section of the new line only be single track then???

    • @ds1868
      @ds1868 3 года назад +8

      @Rob Tyman Nope it will be double track and rated for top speed of 100mph. It was originally double track, reduced to single track after the cuts in the 1960s but will return to double track. Lots of work needed though many bridges are being rebuilt and the earth works stabilised and a brand new station at Winslow. Plus a brand new flyover at Bletchley This is why it's costing over £1 billion for this section alone.

      @@ds1868 Thanks for adding this information.
      Do you know if any part of the route will reuse any of the former Varsity line trackbed?
      I heard Starmer indicated funding for other lost routes, which will be needed when petrol car sales phase out and affordability/limitations of electric become an issue for many.

      @@dahliagreen5919 Hello, the former Varsity line track bed is being used all the way from Oxford to Bedford. The video you see here is one of the mothballed sections between Bicester and Bletchley. However the section between Bedford and Cambridge will be completely new. This is due to the fact that sections of the former track bed have been built over. Either way the entire route between Oxford and Cambridge will built for 100mph running. For an idea of how the entire route will look like take a look at the completed section between Oxford and Bicester: ruclips.net/video/eueA0O2LghU/видео.html

      @@ds1868 Thank you very much. I had wondered a lot about the route, because of development around Bedford especially, and near Sandy. From there to Cambridge it's relatively clear with a few exceptions.
      The former Bedford-Hitchin line was under discussion some years ago, but apparently dropped as a partial duplication of the re-sited varsity line.

      Once you get to Cambridge (Main), the existing XC service runs to STN regularly. It's the "getting to Cambridge" solution that is most problematic, with the original "Varsity Line" formation built over - hence the consultation about going through the new and emerging settlements around Camborne.
