Half-Life: Alyx is just around the corner. I decided to revisit the rest of the series and give it a new breath of life through VR, when I discovered an experimental build of the game, featuring NPC's powered by voice recognition and machine learning. The result? The most infuriating (and hilarious) playthrough of Half-Life VR you could imagine. Join Wayne, Tommy, Dr. Coomer, Bubby, and [REDACTED] in their quest to escape Black Mesa!

I love how the premise of this is that Wayne is just playing a secret prototype version of the game with hyper-advanced ai, but the second he is in game, he *becomes* Gordon and suddenly has a son and graduated from M.I.T.
Wayne got so into it more people make fan content of it not being a game and gordon being naturally part of the story than the og concept, i adore it. 🤭

i mean the explanation wayne gave on stream was "i have to get in character to make the ai work", which worked well lore-wise for the initial bit of "oh yeah this is totally ai". production-wise it's just obviously better if wayne has a pretense that allows him to method act. hell, there are moments later in the series where wayne is stressed out of his mind irl over things going wrong behind the scenes and/or chat misbehaving and man he just masterfully channels that energy directly into gordon.

My take on Benrey is that he's an anti-piracy measure and the whole passport thing is a prompt for someone to look at a monkey island code wheel type thing to verify their copy of the game. Because he's self aware and hard-coded to prevent pirates from progressing normally, he becomes the antagonist. Should've bought the game, Wayne.

The improv in this is so next level at times. This whole thing had me in stitches! And huge shoutout to Dr. Coomer, his impersonation scientist voice is beyond amazing.
The passport guard coming in after the explosion is comedic GOLD
The person who acts Dr Coomer is definitely the most convincing. He feels like he has a few bugs as he repeats sentences and sticks with a tone of voice which sounds consistent every time.

4th wall breaks are SUPPOSED to surprise you, you need to be fully immersed into whatever show or movie you're watching, and then they need to surprise you.
Doing it repeatedly, especially with Mr.Passport guy, ruins the immersion of the idea this guy had.
Also, that's an awful 4th wall break, never break the 4th wall like "This reminds me of another game", thats just awful, and low effort.
Wait for a moment whereupon you can make a genuine reference, and don't ever mention the reference, specifically just make the reference so as to allow people to come to the conclusion that you're referencing something else on their own.

It’s a shame too. Bubby does technically have the most accurate scientist voice compared to the half life scientist NPCs which could lead to some good comedy if he chose himself a character that would fit with that, (one example: like only communicating in the pre recorded voice lines the original scientists used in his voice and the odd sentence). That would be unique and funny if done right.
But as a character right now he never achieves his potential as he seems to his act like he wants to rush things along with no running gags or things that make him stand out.

As of today, this series is now four years old. So let's talk about this. I think that Half Life VR but the AI is self aware is a genuine showcase of the power of improv. As stated by wayne, everything in this series was not planned. Every piece of dialogue was made on the spot. And for people who (at least to my knowing) have no experience with acting, this is impressive. The ongoing story is super funny and creative, without even needing a plan. Most players didn't even know what there characters name was gonna be until they had to. It's incredible. This series is machinima at it's best. HLVRAI, even for how stupid it is, is improve at it's finest.

Can we take a second to appreciate not only the great comedic timing of the cast but the editing too, like perfectly cut screaming and cutting off after a character says the darndest things? It’s almost professional editing you’d see in high-budget flicks. I love it. ❤

Almost all of this was improv, and according to Wayne, up until act 3 and 4 pretty much everything was unplanned. In conclusion, it was most likely accidental foreshadowing.
This is genius, like a combination Freeman's Mind, Real-Time Fandub Games, and all the best parts of Gmod. This is not enough to explain how much I enjoyed this, but I love it.

I love how they never made it not feel like he didn’t miss like a core aspect of the game. They always make it feel like he missed an important mechanic, and accidentally sequence broke his way into all this.

Holly's Dr. Coomer has inspired a new form of self care for me. Whenever i'm too depressed to eat or get water, etc. I just announce, "Gordon, I'm Hungry/Thirsty/etc." And I keep doing that till i annyoy myself into taking care of myself.
