    Whether you're making a cloak for a costume or for a traditional armor, this video will cover the basics you need to construct it! Chuck shows how to make this cloak out of a piece of whole hide upholstery leather, but you can also cut panels out of smaller hides and stitch them together. This cloak also features a collar and faux hood. We hope this video inspires you to make your own version of a cloak!

    Can we as a society, bring back wearing cloaks? I like having my shoulders and head covered, but not my forearms...so a cloak would be amazing.

      My wife has been known to wear a cloak on occasion. I like the idea of them as well. I think the issue is cars. A cloak will either bunch up or will need to the bundle to the side when sitting in a car. Riding a horse a clock would work much better. In general though, I agree that cloaks should be a more common occurrence.

    I wish you would have put it on Chuck to see how it looked while wearing it. It would make nice rain cloak for any event outside if it starts to rain.
    And one made with Camo Print would be good for sitting in your blind, giving you snow, rain and wind protection waiting for that big Buck to come by.
    Those cheap plastic ponchos really suck if there is any kind of wind. Pretty much a use once and they are shot.
    And if you don't remember to get another one you end up getting wet or going home.

    FYI, If you do the studs before you glue the collar together, and only put the tines through the one half you won't have to worry about the tines loosening over time. Also if you have a stud setter or a rounded end setter of some kind (I used different sized steel bearings welded to steel pipe and that welded to a steel plate) to pich the times in more, making the tines turn in onto themselves slightly instead of just overlapping themselves. This only works with hollow backed studs.

    I'm new at this leather craft, I did do it over 40 years ago in school back when they really taught kids an let them make different type of stuff. But now I'm disabled veteran and retired and found your videos about 3 weeks ago and started thinking, wow I forgot how much fun that was an bought tools and leather to do it. I am going to teach my 3 grand babies to make things from leather because they all love making crafts. But you Mr Chuck, you sir are a true leather craftsman in every thing you have made on here. An this cloak, wow I love it and never seen anyone make one before. How much does a thin hide of leather cost like you started out with that huge piece. What thickness is it and what animal did it come from. I don't think you said in this awesome video. An a huge Thank You to Everyone who helped video record an edit all these great videos because I know that's alot of hard work. Thank you all from Mr Chuck and his video staff because you all make such great videos and my grand daughters told me this guy (Mr Chuck) reminds then of the fun teachers at their school, always having that positive attitude and reminds us of Bob Ross the painter who never maked mistakes just happy accidents. Staying positive is best way to be. I've noticed if I'm not feeling well, I grab my phone get on RUclips and find my buddy Mr Chuck, and before long I can forget about the pain and want to keep watching more videos until I fall asleep. Here it is after 5am in the morning and I'm going to watch two more, then go to sleep, maybe. But I've said that same thing every hour since 2am this morning. Again, simply love your videos and craftsmanship and yes I save them for later to let my grand babies watch so can pick out what they want to make and we do. I still need to find a few more hand tools, I'll check out your website. Thank You and God Bless You All.

    I've made a few cloth capes from curtain cloth and ran a chord through the bottom. To keep it from getting lost I used big clover knots. At first it was for weight, (I wanted it to billow, not fly.) but I also found that I could fold the end up to my neck and create a shoulder shroud effect that handled well indoors.

      There are patterns for vests, Google them. I made a vest out of suede and it was a royal pain making sure it fit the person I made it for. Before you try you might want to consult a seamstress. Joann's sewing and cloth store and also Hobby Lobby has them too. You might want to try it with cloth before leather. Sewing suede was harder than I thought as it was like trying to punch and sew rubber.

    • @MountainFisher
      @MountainFisher 4 года назад

      You will need to find the thinnest suede you can find or it will be too heavy, try velvet cloth instead. Do you have a decent sewing machine? If not just gluing the liner isn't sufficient, you need to sew the edges. A regular sewing machine will be good enough for 2 oz upholstery leather and thin velvet cloth, but most suede is 3 oz and 5 oz of leather would be too much for a regular low end machine. You can hand sew it, but it will take forever. Talk to a seamstress about particulars.

    • @WeaverLeatherSupply
      @WeaverLeatherSupply  4 года назад

      That would be BEAUTIFUL! The only thing I would suggest is a pig lining or something really supple and thin so the weight and the body won’t jump up too much. Send a pic when it’s done. I would love to see one lined!

    • @WeaverLeatherSupply
      @WeaverLeatherSupply  4 года назад +2

      Hi Luke,
      The leather is an upholstery leather so it wouldn't be water repellent and it will fade to some degree with a lot of sun exposure. You can add a topcoat, such as RTC to help seal it from rain but it will add a gloss to your leather. You can also clean and condition the leather if it does get rained on and dirty from use. Hope that helps!

    • @MountainFisher
      @MountainFisher 4 года назад

      No, would be too stiff. You could use veg for tooled edging though.

    • @WeaverLeatherSupply
      @WeaverLeatherSupply  4 года назад

      The veg just has too much body. Something like a “Milled” leather may work and that will take some tooling and stamping but it’s a bit mushy (just in my experience). The chromes are best just because of the supple nature of the tannage. You could make the collar out of veg and tool it or the edging as Mountain Fisher said.

      Check for the fabric ones and 3/4 circle, a half circle like this one doesn't close enough for such use. For fabric look for canvas (and wax it with beeswax for water repellant) or wool. The waxed canvas will most likely be better in bad weather (doesn't really need to dry), but stiffer and less warm. The wool is warmer, more supple, but heavier and will absorb water at some point, taking time to dry. In old cloak times bad weather was mostly avoided by staying home/inside rather than travelling trough it, because at some point water gets trough every fabric (or your sweat gets it wet from inside).

      farm tyfarms to for that information, I still like the idea of leather and that too can be sealed, as for colder weather I could just make a 2nd one with a fur inlay. I agree that people would stay indoors to avoid bad weather, however today's society doesnt permit such a thing I would like to discuss more options and maybe figure away to combine the good ideas or come up with better options

    That’s a stunning cloak! I have a few myself but they are wool. Now I wanna make a leather one.
    Would love to see pictures of it on, like how it falls. Especially together with the armor you mentioned.

    Can you do a cloak with a liner

    • @MountainFisher
      @MountainFisher 4 года назад

      You would have to use a cloth liner, two layers of leather would be pretty heavy. Also you'd need a sewing machine or spend forever hand sewing the edges.

    • @christophermcculley8318

      Silk liner would work

    • @MountainFisher
      @MountainFisher 4 года назад

      @@christophermcculley8318 A piece of silk that big would cost more than suede. Silk is sold by the square foot not yard. Very expensive if you can find some that big in a pattern you like. I used it for lining wallets.

    Must be missing something, or it's not that long of a cloak. With the hide dimensions listed on the website it's not big enough. If your 6' tall or over a reasonable drop would be tall 52"- 58" length makes the top side to side 104" at minimum. Largest listed dimension is 84".
    Hopefully im wrong this would be great for a ren faire in the fall.

    How would you do that cloak with a hood?

    • @WeaverLeatherSupply
      @WeaverLeatherSupply  4 года назад

      Hi Mike,
      The hood would be an easy addition and you can attach that in several ways. The best thing here is to find a fabric pattern for a hooded cloak, go with that pattern and sew to the base of what would be your collar. Good luck with it! I hope it’s beautiful!

    In fabric yardage, would this be 2 or 3 yards of material?

    • @MountainFisher
      @MountainFisher 4 года назад

      It took up about 2/3 of a side of leather which runs 18 to 22 sq. feet, figure it from there.

    • @WeaverLeatherSupply
      @WeaverLeatherSupply  4 года назад +1

      2 yards will give you a 36" cloak so it will be just a little bit shorter than the one Chuck made. I would measure and see where that falls on you and if you feel it's a little short, go with 3 yards and you'll have plenty!

    Loved everything about that cloak except for the false hood which just looked tacky and awful. Make a hood or don’t make a hood. Making a TV prop is not where it’s at. Following the logic of that false hood why even bother carrying a sword? Just stick a hilt directly onto a scabbard, right?
