  • To mark the 60th anniversary of the Central Office of Information, Fi Glover narrates the story of the British public information film. With films that range from the bizarre to the hilarious to the downright terrifying, the COI has tried to inform and shape the nation's behaviour. But as society has changed, so too has the way the government talks to us. This programme traces the increasingly sophisticated output of the COI through some of its most memorable films.
With Fi Glover, Martin Moore, Andrew Collins, Brian Winston and Peter York, 80's expert.

Thanks for not cropping out the ident at the start. As an American, it's cool to see how other stations function, and idents are one of the greatest examples of that in my opinion.

The scariest one I ever saw here in Australia when I was in primary school, was Never Go with Strangers, especially the scenes when the cars glowed red.

Frances the firefly is the fire campaign I remember.
When the fire service used to come in tell us stories about their job, they didn't mince their words either. They certainly around that campaign when I was in year 2 and in year 3, remember the nightmare after it...we got given these story books based on the lesson as well. The 90s were good.
I asked my niece who is in year 3 if she has ever had lessons off the fire brigade or paramedics she said no. I wonder if they even bother anymore =/
It worked though always be super cautious with fire safety.

11:30 This film was great! I've seen the full film on the CoI archive website.
Richard Massingham was a seriously underrated performer.

Thanks for adding to RUclips, my wife and I had a great laugh watching the public information films. We both agreed the Nuclear War PIF must have been the blueprint of Boris Johnson dealing with the Coronavirus pandemic!!!! I only wish Charlie (PhD) the cat had subtitles 😂. We still have Joe & Petunia as my neighbours😅 must get back into my refuge we have heard the 4 minute warning ⚠️

Somehow I actually survived this very dangerous time.
Charley kept me safe. (The cat, not the other Charley)

I am confused about one item. What was a policeman? It is something that doesn't seem to have survived the years. Well, I've certainly not seen one.

When I saw the army ad of the soldier in the field telling us his friends are behind me, I was expecting a tank running over him because the camouflage was doing its job, as a kid, that was the message I saw at the time

Seems to me that well utilised, this is well worth it. Shame todays government is neither brave enough to do this, or have the correct morals to spread.

These are the golden days the public wish we went back to, the good old day's, when you were divided and accepted your place in society, structure and discipline, meeted out by your superiors.
Brainwashing used to be very effective way of controlling the masses and keeping people in line.
The mentally Ill kept securely locked up out of the way of normal decent people, abuse swept under the carpet.
Unfair dismissal was being forcefully chucked out of the factory down concrete steps and threatened with further repcussions if you showed your face again.
Not good complaining as you'd be told to stop your whinging and whining, pull your socks up and learn to behave yourself

My father was a Community Beat Officer in the Midlands many years ago. He died in 2012.

Where I live in the Midlands, on one very long busy road are 2 odd houses in that they look different from the others, both painted white, my mum said they used to be the policeman's houses for that area.
