    Thank you so much for this video. Peeling chestnuts has always been a stress inducing nightmare of trying to salvage the nutmeat stuck inside hard unyielding shells. I just finished peeling about 50 chestnuts and it took maybe 5 minutes. I don’t think scored them all lengthwise or the right depth but he end result was so satisfying. For me, about half the chestnuts had issues with the skin staying on but I’ve found when you use them in a roasted stuffing that skin disappears and doesn’t affect the final product at all. And the happiness of having a whole,skinless nut pop out effortlessly was such a nice thing to behold. Also, using the rubber gloves has a wonderful added benefit for anyone who does get a stubborn chestnut: they prevent hard chestnuts bits going up your fingernails..a miserable torture of Thanksgivings past. My full bowl of shelled chestnuts is prepped..eliminating one of the formerly most unpleasant parts of cooking the meal.

      Had the same problem. I suspect that you need to make sure you score all the way through the husk when you're doing that . . .
      Some worked great, others not so much.

      @@stevehorste4636 I have the same problem. When I scored them I made sure to go through both layers, but the inner peal still stayed closed when the outer shell split open. one even split in two and the inner peal was still stuck

      Yeah same. Though this time i still had a tough time getting the peel off. Pressed hard enough on the chestnuts to get a blister .3.
      But the inner peel is much softer after soaking, it does help, and it's not as dangerous haha

      We've offered our best tips for peeling chestnuts. There are of course some other factors that can influence how likely the inner peel is to stick to the nut. For instance: Age and dryness of the chestnut. Older, drier chestnuts are more likely to have skins that stick to the meat. Freshness is key; the fresher the chestnuts, the easier the skin usually comes off.

      Then work in 3 min batches through the steamer. In skin just peels right off. But must work out of the steamer one at a time.

    • @piatto
      @piatto 3 года назад

      Normally, peeled chestnuts are less flavorful than roasted as they aren't yet cooked. This method just helps you to peel them, if you are intending then to use the raw chestnuts to make flour or in other recipes.

      Roast them and they taste sweet. I like to roast them in the oven but you can roast them over fire. Be sure to score them and soak them before roasting so the skin comes off easily.

    Is there no quick way to just open the chestnuts without all the boiling, heating, and transferring. I don’t care if they’re not whole as I’ll be making them for a chestnut and cream pasta sauce.

    • @piatto

      Unfortunately, chestnut shells/skin don't just pop off as is the case with some other kinds of nuts. If you aren't looking for raw chestnuts in the end, feel free to check out some of our other English videos @piattorecipes to see if there is a method you prefer to this one. However, all methods for separating chestnuts from their shell/skin require some kind of cooking...
