    I became totally absorbed in the movie, which led to not only reading the very long novel, but also exploring other Indian films and books. I discovered Rabindranath Tagore’s wonderful writing. I also found the music very beautiful and haunting in the movie. So all in all I have become much more aware of and educated about Indian culture. Thank you !

    This web series was one of the best things I have seen in long time. If India is She and it ever drops her face veil it will look exactly like the excellent scenes, story and brilliant adaptation of the novel presented in this series. I think most of Indians know a Lata in their lives. The fusion of Galib and Daag shers into music of Anoushka Shankar is mind blowing. After watching this series I started to write poetry again which I had paused from few years. It just touched something inside me.

    For those who are not familiar with the novel it revolves around a mother trying to find a husband for her daughter in post- independence, post-partition India, a suitable boy!

    Loved every frame of this celluloid adaption of one of my favorite book and I must say the very soul of the book was so well intact through out all 6 episodes..!! I was wondering how it could be possible to do justice, in mere 6 episodes, to so many characters from multiple families, their interwoven lives and chemistry with each other and so much happening around them on social and political canvas of the country at that time..but I must say this mini series is crafted with razor sharpness with every single frame conveying so many facets and layers of story and constructed so beautifully like a painting, with subtlety of poetry..!!
    I already watched it twice and probably will watch again too, absorbing and observing very many minute details conveying so much about the people, their lives, their relationships, the places, the mood and the history of a new independent India so authentically!!
    Loved how the first scene starts with Lata eating guava, all by her self living her own moments, engrossed in her own thoughts and dreams and the very last scene also the same way at a different place after a few years..she had grown and moved on toward her own chosen path the same way the newly independent India had moved during that time frame..!!

    I like A Suitable Boy so far, but I don’t understand why the dialogues & their delivery is not tailored to the way in which Indians speak English. No representation of how language intersects with class. The verbiage is homogenised upper class British English rather than Indian.

    • @anhaietaa
      @anhaietaa 4 года назад +27

      In the 1950s, the Indian English educated class spoke in a hybrid British accent owing to the convent schools, and took a certain pride in doing so. Some sects still continue to speak like this in the present day.

    • @shivampatnaik2000
      @shivampatnaik2000 4 года назад +8

      I hear noticeably Indian accents from all the Indians apart from Mira Nair and Vikram Seth who sound somewhat British (not completely though). The way I speak isn't far removed from how most people in this video speak.
      Indians use a variety of accents while speaking English. Perhaps you haven't come across anyone who speaks like this in real life. But there are many Indians who do speak like this.

    Doesn't it look artificial when Indian languages make an almost homogeneous appearance in the series? Like why is everyone speaking in English? and if it is to make the series for a larger audience, why the mother of Pran and Mann Kapoor isn't? In the current days of subtitles, it felt a bit outdated while all the non-English/partial English spoken series are creating their mark on their credit in the global audience, for example, Ramy or more commercially appreciated La casa de Papel, Dark etc. 1950s India with almost everyone speaking English all the time felt unconvincing, distracting!
