    I think that guitar is more for the advanced player because that style of tuner ( slotted) can be a challenge during string changes, and some people don't know how to feed the strings thru the back of the guitar. And remember not to over tune the high E.

    Hi Ellen I wanted to ask you have you ever done a tutorial on memorizing the fretboard and breaking down on how you play chords in different places?
    i’ve seen a lot of guitar tutorials telling beginners you have to memorize the fretboard but they don’t exactly explain how to do it other than just memorizing it and they don’t go into what it’s for, or why you should memorize it and then once you have it memorized how you are actually supposed to use it now that you know where everything is.
    As a beginner should I try to memorize the fretboard or learn chords and bar chords first? I’m not really sure where to begin.

    Hi, Ellen. About two weeks ago, I took delivery of another "transparent" black Donner DST-400. Sadly, unlike yours, my DST shows NO wood grain through the finish and is entirely opaque. I still rather like the look, but had I known what the black would look like upon arrival I would have gone with the green. Suppose they decided to give a few bodies 4 or 5 pieces of alder (or a mix of mystery woods). What better way to cover up that "oops" than by another that resulted in the complete concealment of the evidence of the original crime. Doesn't mean that the body actually sucks or anything, but there's no way to know short of prying off the pick guard -- something I admit I should have done by now (Okay, there's MY "oops!"🙃). Could be even that would only tell you so much. ...
    Okay, curiosity got the better of me, and my Donner is currently string-less and awaiting parts, fret job and setup, so I went ahead and snatched the pickguard off for a look. Turns out Donner saw me coming and painted the interior cavities. I could see a glue seam about halfway down the pickup cavities, suggesting that the bodies are made of 6 pieces of wood, rather than the 3 it might look like with the green ones -- at best. I still have no clue what one might see through a truly transparent finish. In case anyone is interested, it looks like the pickup routes might accommodate 3 humbuckers with the right pickguard support. I haven't seen that before. Imagine one of these puppies with 3 full-size humbuckers and three 3-way mini-toggle switches (one each per humbucker, of course); each wired to give full humbucker, off and coil split options to each pickup. The versatility! All the positions and wiring options available in the same space as with a 5-way switch. Just have to learn how to switch between options quickly. Wouldn't you have to do that with the DST's stock electronics? Sure, it would be easier, but you'd still have to put in some work. And it would still be worth doing the work, too, in both cases. I've done it myself. In the 80s, I was able to get a pre-Fender Charvel super Strat that had a basswood body, a maple bolt-on big block 22-fret neck, a Floyd Rose that had been originally done that stupid way, with a locking Floyd nut right behind a regular string nut, meaning you still had to get the regular nut right before the Floyd could help you. A previous owner modified the neck in the nut area by building up the area somewhat with a putty of some sort after removing the original nuts and shaping the result to allow the mounting of a Floyd in something resembling the proper manner. This axe also rocked 2 stacked humbuckers in the neck and middle positions and a full-size humbucker in the bridge position, emulating the H-S-S pickup configuration in visual form, and each pickup was switched between on and off with a trio of 2-way mini-toggle switches, placed in a row roughly where the 5-way switch would be in a regular Strat. When I still had this guitar (It was sadly stolen.💙), I would practice to songs with it, just like I would the other, 5-way-switch-equpped Peavey I owned along with this beauty by the original Charvel/Jackson, and I would switch pickups in-song with it just like I would do with the other. I just had to do different things. I could also get different results, especially since this guitar also had a 9-volt battery-powered active preamp in the system, allowing for active cut/boost 2-band eq. I really miss this guitar. It was easily the most versatile guitar I've ever owned, and I never got it up to its potential because I didn't know then what I know now about setups. If I get brave about the wiring, the Donner could fill the gap. While I would be loath to remove the Donner's stock pickups (I REALLY LIKE them!), that just means I could use a wiring diagram showing how to wire another push-pull pot into the place of the middle tone control pot with the switch bringing the neck pickup into the mix with the switch engaged. This would mean yet another four sounds: Neck and bridge full humbucker, neck and bridge split, all three with bridge full humbucker and all three with bridge split. It would still be simple, fast, intuitive and visibly hidden when not in use. Hope I find a way someday, but this guitar is so sweet without all the mods, I'd say it's good right now. I do have something of a problem with the fretboard radius; most of my guitars have flatter fretboards. My next rounder fretboard has a Gibson-inspired radius of 12 inches, and I go up from there. This baby's Indian laurel fretboard sticks with Fender's modern standard of 9.5 inches in fretboard radius. It's taking some getting used to, but I'm rather liking the experience so far. We'll see how it goes after the fret work. All bets come off until the setup after is done!

    Can you do a video journey of playing the electric guitar with a whammy bar?
    That would be more interesting since you do have a playlist of your electric guitar journey.

    The tremolo needs to be set to float. It probably comes locked down. Overall, that guitar needs to be set up, which only costs about $30 at a shop if you don't know how to do it yourself. It will sound better that way too.
    I still don't use the whammy bar, but I do use the tremolo with my palm.

      Ahhh wow I just did a quick google search and had no idea about the different ways you can set up the tremolo! 🙌 Thanks for the info and I'll have to look into what works best for me (a relative noob 😂)

      @@for3v3rfaithful : A Stratocaster type guitar is highly customizable for playability and tone.
      If I just got a new Stratocaster or most any other guitar, at the minimum I would DIY or take it to a shop to:
      * File the nut
      * Clean and oil the fretboard--which should be done about every six months
      * Polish the frets
      * Adjust the neck relief
      * Adjust the string height
      * Adjust the pickup height
      * Adjust the intonation
      A lot of people buy guitars and end up quitting not because they can't play, but because the instrument was difficult to play without these basic adjustments, particularly the nut and action.
      Look up "How to setup your Stratocaster." There are a lot of great videos on that.
      The funny thing is, I've been a sax player since pretty much near birth but have no idea how to service a sax; guitar though, only 2 years and 9 months and I do all of the work myself. My Stratocaster is 100% custom; I replaced everything but the body, and even that I lined the cavity with copper shielding. I even changed the tremolo. No pot metal on my guitar!
