Also the main feature of a smart phone is the screen itself which totally restricts any innovative design, whereas with a feature phones we've seen some absolute design icons that smart phones can never emulate. I still have an Ericsson T28 and the Nokia 8110 "Matrix" phone. Both of them draw more looks and start more conversations than the latest offerings from Android and Apple which from a distance look near identical from a to their models from 5 years ago.
I do see the rise of "I used a dumb phone for 30 days" type of contents, but I don't think it's a big trend. It's a tiny minority (>1%) who makes a complete switch (and many of those switch back to their smartphone a few weeks/months later). I do get the distraction/spending too much time on smartphone argument, but a better approach would be to make your smartphone dumb-ish by simply deleting social media apps and installing a minimalist launcher. Sometimes workplaces or banks require a smartphone app, or you need a map in an emergency, so it's better to be able to accommodate these situations.
Hello. Thank you for the wonderful video. I'm a Japanese author! Due to my smartphone addiction, I started using a dumbphone for my mental health. I've written a book and videos about my experience. I found your video very interesting. I think digital detox is necessary worldwide. I've heard that dumbphones are experiencing a resurgence overseas, so I'm hopeful. I hope there will be more simple phones like this!
My wife and I are up in age and we use laptops for medical, email, youtube , movies , etc. When we are out of the home, we just need to talk to each other, or emergency services, that is all. I have come to the conclusion that all we need are prepaid "burner' phone plans and reliable flip phones. Seems fast, reliable and low cost. Am I correct ? Can you help ? Subbed and shared.
I think a prepaid burner phone is a great idea. Especially if you're from Europe or the US. Lots of great flip phones available as well as the more classic Nokia style phones. Thanks for the sub! ☺️
I have a perfectly working 25 year old Nokia and a more up to date feature phone and an iPhone. I don't have social media and in the attempt to remove myself from the eyes of the overlords I went with a Pixel device and installed GraphenOS which comes with very little in a the way of apps pre-installed, so its a blank slate, can be a smartphone, can be a dumb phone, you choose. As I like a camera available, listen to music, perhaps a need to do online banking and like a device that when arrive at a shopping mall does not invite me to join a network, this seems a mid point solution. No google, no apple harvesting is just a bonus
If you get a “dumb” phone, make really sure it supports 4G LTE and its Voice over LTE (VoLTE) functionality. Reason: many carriers are turning off 2G and even 3G digital cellular functionality and that would make a lot of older phones useless.
I'm shocked that only 70% of people check their phone within 10 minutes of waking up. I would have thoughts it's like 99% checking their phone immediately when they wake up.
Alarm clock for sure. And if I had missed client calls overnight for a last minute shoot or something like that. I want to be prompt in responding. But whether that's 7am or 7:30am, I suppose I COULD "not" check my phone for 30 min and it wouldn't impact them too much. Imagine waking up and going 30 minutes without looking at your phone. Only happens when I'm camping lol. @@the_flipside
I honestly hate having a smart phone, but I'm not sure there's any other option for me (at least right now). I'm a housecleaner who communicates with her clients via text and listens to podcasts while she works. I'm car-free so I really rely on Google maps etc. for biking around, navigating transit, etc. From time to time (rarely, but it does happen) I need to Google something for one of my clients (a recipe, or cleaning product info, etc.). But it makes me so uncomfortable how relatively new this technology is (not even 15 years, I think) and yet how firmly it's cemented in our lives. I didn't have a phone at all when I was in high school; I was already an outlier then, but it wasn't unthinkable. Now it's hard to imagine anyone hiring you for any job at all if you don't have a smart phone. I will be interested
I am car free as well the problem is everyone uses smart phones to know what bus to take and when the next bus comes or where to drive if they have a car. It amazes me how people don't know how to get anywhere without one. I lived in a large city before smart phones I had a analog cell phone that could only call and I managed to get everywhere by public tranist we as humans have the ability to memorize where everything is to this day I can go back to that city and I still know where everything is and what bus/subway to take to get everywhere. I have never had a smart phone currently use a Punkt Mp02 it just calls and texts doesn't even have a camera and I just wait for the bus to come life is different without a smart phone but I will argue that is is much healthier without one. Male 47 years old here. There was no such thing as a cell phone when I was a teenager.
is quite stupid to buy the light phone for 300 having the option to buy a feature phone from nokia, Alcatel or any random Brand for 20$. These pones wont help you to remove the smartphone from your life. No without wasap or Spotify, Google maps or Google translate.
My issue with smart phones isnt the social media addiction as I dont tend to use social media, but my problem stems from the huge amount of notifications. Its so bad that I have severe anxiety from it because its mostly from my mail accounts that I need on my phone thanks to my university.
The nothing phone is another product that aims to decrease people's screen time. The default OS has a very monochrome theme to try to make apps less appealing to jump into, and they have a bunch of lights on the back which can perform a bunch of functions like telling you when you get notifications or even tracking the progress of timers or food deliveries, thus encouraging you to lay your phone face down and giving you less of a reason to pick it up. Now these are the claims about it's design made by the company itself, you could also make the argument that those lights are an appealing gimmick to play with which will encourage people to use the phone more to mess around with them, the phone comes with software to do so, but I'd say they're at least making an attempt. You also have motorola razr foldable flip phones with their small basic led screen when closed, which the company claims helps you disconnect from your phone since it's such a basic display. This is of course clever marketing to sell the cheaper outer display as a feature, but the fact that several companies are even bothering using "it'll make you use your phone less" as a selling point makes me think there must be market demand for it that they're responding to. Maybe we'll see more of it in the future, who knows.
Besides been a youtube trend still never saw anyone using a feature phone besides grandma even then some grandpas have a smartphone, maybe in the usa is different like their obscession with water bootles.
Tell me why I spent the whole video thinking the term was "dump phones." 😂 (That's not on you, I even read the title like that. 🤦♀️) It's an interesting idea. I've never had a single inkling towards breaking my addiction though. 😂 My phone might as well be welded into my hand.
i think we're just not built for all the stimulation the modern internet gives us. yes the dopamine hits are nice and im addicted and not quitting in the forseeable future but i do think dumbing down could lead to a better life, it's tricky, if you can socialise and do human activities then im sure it would but if you cant afford it or physically do it because of the capitalist hellscape we live in, then computers are a nice escape.
Imagine i wana talk to everyone in the phone. Like ppl don't text on social media groups, or discord or telegram ... etc... to the other side of the world that is sleeping .. Boomer phone probably is a best name.
It's not that easy if you already rely on a smartphone every day. If that solution is really simple as you said, most people right now will not often using a phone right now. But no, it's not that simple. The developer already thinking about how to make an app that can make user want to use more and more, you hook into their app and 1-2 hours already gone
Although the content of this video is truly very interesting, I feel like the tone of your voice is slightly not matching the interesting-ness of your content. I would recommend to you to have a more "lively" voice, say, by having the tone of your voice bounce more.

That's a good point ☝️
Your RUclips quality is incredible! Can't wait to see you grow!!
Thank you! 🙏
nokia feature phones could survive a nuke tbh
This is an incredibly well put-together video! You need more subscribers!
Thank you 🙏
Nokia please go back and make phones

I literally use my Nokia 1112 nowadays when I fell to be semi disconnected
If the LightPhone 2 didn't cost like 8 million dollars, I would've bought three of them.
Daylight robbery for a phone that can do FUCK ALL

The Light Phone 2 can do all of this
I am car free as well the problem is everyone uses smart phones to know what bus to take and when the next bus comes or where to drive if they have a car. Yes, I think that's a big problem too actually that I didn't get to touch on.
Why don’t you shut them off? All except phone…

I didn't know about that feature on a Nothing phone. Thanks for your insight!
Good video!
Thank you 😄
Bro can you please tell the code from celcius short film btw great video ❤️
been using a dumb phone for about two years now. It fits my life but it's not for everyone.
nice video

I know the feeling! 😂😅
I cant wait for my service to be up on my iphone. Im gunna sell it and switch to a dumb phone.

I share those sentiments exactly! At the moment I try to go on 24h stints without my smartphone and feel it helps a lot
If it would have whatsapp it would be a no brainer for me. But without whatsapp it doesn't have a use case to me other then a gimmick
Yeah, WhatsApp is pretty vital
Imagine i wana talk to everyone in the phone.

How about just ... not checking your phone so much?
