    As a staunch conservative, we don’t agree with the people calling this woke. Our general stance is that diverse characters are great, IF they are original and well thought out characters. Not just there for diversity’s sake. Ciri deserves a lead role more than any female character I can think of.

    • @Nathan-l9j6t
      @Nathan-l9j6t 21 день назад +3

      Ciri does deserve a lead role, just not as the Witcher. What we saw in the trailer was Ciri being formed into Geralt 2.0, killing the entire Ciri character we saw develop in the Witcher 3. I personally don't want to play Ciri as the Witcher, doesn't make sense to me.

    • @JoshBoeke
      @JoshBoeke 21 день назад +21

      @@Nathan-l9j6t You got all that from a few lines of dialogue and a single fight with a monster? Come on, man. Geralt was known for his lack of emotion, Ciri (as shown in the trailer) was far more demonstrative in her mannerisms and clearly not just "Geralt 2.0" - she's wanted to be a Witcher since she was a child, so pretending like this changes her character somehow is absurd.

      @@JoshBoekeElder Blood wouldn't let her mutate. I didn't read the books but from what I gathered she tried to drink a witcher potion or something and she was resistant to it. And she's also more resistant to toxins than a full on witcher. I assume she would reject the mutagens too, especially since they're given to boys at 7-10 years of age, before they've hit puberty
      She's already badass enough with teleportation and time travel. Witcher magic is simple magic that can be cast with one hand that sorcerers pretty much see as cheap party tricks so she could easily learn it. The only thing she couldn't do is use potions and decoctions, not a big issue if you incorporate her Elder Blood powers into the gameplay somehow

      The issue is that woke is not a set thing but a different line that must not be crossed for different people. Some people consider any female protagonist to be pushing a “girl boss agenda”. I’ve even seen people call Lara Croft woke. There was absolutely no way these same people weren’t gonna call a ciri game woke

  • @Unworshipediety
    @Unworshipediety 20 дней назад +6

    I don't smoke the anti-woke pipe. Folks seem to be so unhappy and they do it to themselves. Life is hard enough, why get yourself mad by your own choice? Besides, Ciri is lore-accurate, has been there the entire time, and makes sense. What this proves is that hate channels *need* content and hate never ends. They want all female characters to be boobies, and all characters to be white or stereotypes. As for woke folks, they need to learn how to write stuff better and learn what _sub-text_ means. If they want to include some idea, just _trust the players,_ and don't spoon-feed the audience so much by saying---> *HEY LOOK AT ME!*, so much. I'm pretty progressive myself, but even then _some_ ideas don't need to be so front and center, depending on the context or time frame. That said, the Ciri situation is just so weird because she looks... like a Witcher should look.
    I'm very excited about the game because the whole reason I never played a Witcher game was because I just didn't like Geralt enough. But now, I'm playing The Witcher 3 because I want to get into the world more so I'm prepared for Ciri's adventure I have started to read the source material and so, far... it reads very well. It's a crazy world!

    Ciri as a main character is awesome, and she is the perfect successor to old man Geralt. Let the dude retire and f*** some sorceresses, give the man a break people. The young blood must take over at some point. Story wise this has been set up for a long time coming now! Why does people think it is woke? I don't understand...

  • @fffan6728
    @fffan6728 20 дней назад +6

    There is no "woke" agenda here. First, while some focus on Ciri’s appearance, she looks a bit older and rougher, but still has her curves, makeup, and looks pretty good. More importantly, there is no forced diversity anywhere in the trailer-all the characters appear as Slavic people, true to the setting's time period. As for the claim of Ciri being a "brave and stunning woke female protagonist" and a "Mary Sue," the trailer actually shows the opposite. Ciri messes up the fight, starting completely unprepared, and unlike Geralt, who would have taken his potion before the fight, she only takes it afterward. She almost gets cornered by the creature and barely manages to fight her way out of its cave. In contrast to the Witcher 3 cinematic trailers, where Geralt fights flawlessly and saves the girl, here Ciri fails, and the girl is killed anyway. Some people criticize Ciri’s line "Save yourself!" as woke, but if you actually listen to the full context, she also says, "To shelter! To your father!"-so she doesn’t hate all men like the true "woke girlboss" characters in games like those from Naughty Dog. This shows Ciri’s concern for the girl’s safety, not a rejection of men. The trailer doesn’t empower Ciri by making her perfect; instead, it highlights her struggles and failure, offering a more grounded, flawed portrayal of her character, which is completely fine in my book.

    About unrealistic body standards, Ciri lives in a time and place where they don't have horrid processed foods that cause a lot of obesity troubles amd she most certainly does not live a sedentary life. She walks, runs or rides everywhere and she practices physical combat which is incredible energy intensive. Also, it's likely that she'll go through periods of starvation simply due to a lack of food.
    It simply does not make sense for Ciri to be fat, or anybody in the witcherverse.

    What I am interested to know is how far through the story this clip was taken from.
    I think it is important to see the back history of how Ciri gets from leaving the witcher to this point. I want to see the story of Ciri becoming a Witcher. I'm hoping this is what the Witcher 4 will be and that this clip is later on on the game. Maybe, in the beginning, Ciri is younger and this is towards the end of her path to being a Witcher.

  • @Asankeket
    @Asankeket 21 день назад +6

    I don't get it either. Ciri looks great. if you can watch her face as she's talking, watch her move, and tell me she's ugly I have to ask what's wrong with you. And as Legendary Drops has mentioned in his video, the animations are authentic for a woman, so the accusation they turned her into Geralt 2.0 are without substance. I do get the lore concerns, however. I wanted Ciri as the protagonist of the next Witcher game, but I expected her to be more focused on her Elder Blood powers. Where have they gone? If they play little or no role in the game, I will be disappointed, but it's possible that's one of the progression paths they've planned.

    • @damned0wl
      @damned0wl 21 день назад +3

      Yeah, my guess is that her Elder Blood powers will be suppressed at/near the start of the game (either by the mutations or exhausted by stopping the White Frost), and then we'll be able to build her up with more focus on witcher abilities, or sorcery, or space-time manipulation. Witcher mutations being new, sorcery being something she abandoned as a child and now apparently returns to, and the Elder Blood (maybe) being something she never wanted, but it's coming back anyway... That would fit with the way CDPR have been talking about combat and builds, how they want to bring more role-playing opportunities to the gameplay.
      Pure speculation, obviously :)

    • @The_ViciousOne
      @The_ViciousOne 20 дней назад +2

      I wouldn't be so hung up about the lore actually. Besides the fact that the game breaks the lore by existing, the time peroids in the games aren't part of original cannon, so there is no reason to not reasonably expand the lore if done with respect to the novels. Given CDPR's previous writing in tw2, 3 and Cp2077, I have no doubt they'll manage a reasonable solution.

    Totally agree. The only other feasable option, would have been a no name character like in cp2077. And they would still have to explain how that can become a witcher... In the end I personally think most people that complain so loudly dont know the original cannon too well nor how twists in story writing work... I mean, they even said years ago, that tw4 would play at least 10 years after tw3, so how did they expect her to look?

    People that didn't expect Ciri to be the main character of Witcher 4 and are angry about it never played Witcher 3 and are just grifters that don't like female main characters. Or they are severely mentally challenged to not expect that after completing Witcher 3. It was clearly building up to Ciri being the main character of a sequel game.
    At first I thought the people reacting to Ciri's appearance in Witcher 4 were just overreacting due to current gaming trends when it comes to female characters looking unattractive/masculine. Ciri in that trailer looks fine/average to me. Her face appears more plumper all around. She was definitely more attractive in Witcher 3, but I can chalk it up to Witcher 4 Ciri being older and that this was a cgi trailer. I think they could have made her look more attractive, but a female video game character not being a supermodel is not the that big a deal to me in a vacuum. But lately for the rest of the game industry it has been a red flag that other aspects of the game are also going to be unappealing.
    Then I learned about CDPR doing DEI crap from someone's comment on the trailer, and then I saw a video from 2 years ago from CDPR about them embracing ESG. I am capable of pattern recognition. DEI workplace, the move to Unreal Engine 5, unappealing female characters design, this stuff has usually lead into games that I personally view as bad or mediocre. I hope I'm just wrong, but I'll wait and see.
    And after buying cyberpunk 2077 day one, you better believe I'm waiting for detailed reviews once the game has been out for at least 2-4 weeks until I actually bother touching this game myself. Day 1 reviews from IGN and the like mean nothing.
    The Unreal Engine 5 thing is the one that worries me the most tbh. The real purpose for ditching Redengine for UE5 was so that the newly hired ESG devs can have their generic engine because they aren't skilled or talented enough to work with tools not in the assembly line and require them to be innovative. Makes me think Witcher 4 might as well be made by Ubislop. Again, I could be wrong and hope I am, but we will wait and see.

    Some thoughts:
    1. I think that Ciri is the real main character of the Witcher-pentalogy, and not Geralt.
    2. I think that many, who are angry about Ciri being the main character did want to play either Geralt or a Witcher of their own, who in their opinion must always be male.
    3. Those critics do not understand is, how vital it is to attract a new audience. without a new audience a franchise will die.
    4. Sadly it has become normal to rant and rave about new entries of a franchise and repeatingly tell everyone how bad that is and that it will kill their franchise. But those people are only a minority and forget that they do not own the franchise and that their personal expectations of the future development of a franchise do not matter.

    • @GamingBirch

      Thanks for the comment.
      I did feel like Ciri is more important than Geralt, but I read the books too long ago, and I didn't remember it well enough to confidently make that statement.
      I was thinking about who would make a good male protagonist. Geralt is obviously the first choice, but I feel like that would completely ruin his ending in Blood and Wine. And I probably wouldn't even want to play as someone new in such a well-established franchise with so many great characters. In Witcher 3 I really enjoyed the parts with Ciri, so this pick is great. Of course, that is just my view.
      In my opinion, this reaction just summarizes the built-up frustration with the world right now. Not only gaming, but for example movies too. People see someone wants to "bring new audience" and they automatically interpret it as "we are aiming at modern audiences" and we all saw how those things turn out lately. I somewhat understand the reaction, after all, I had it too, but in this case, it is simply torn out of context and twisted.
      As you said, in this case it looks like these people are in a minority. Most people seem to be excited about the announcement.

      That's such a strawman.
      1. How can Ciri be the "Real main character" when this is only the second game she's been a part of?
      2. That's just projection. Plenty of gamers have willingly played female characters and had zero problems. The difference is that the waters have been poisoned by obvious (And I really hate to say this) "Woke" garbage that has been pushed down their throats for the past 5 years; so much so that even when something seemingly genuine (Like Witcher IV) comes along, people are negative and hesitant. You can thank the "Woke" devs who pushed people into that line of thinking.
      3. That's such an incorrect statement. The attempt to "Attract a new audience" is PROVEN to only have negative effects in the gaming-sphere. Playing to your core audience has always shown to have positive results. This is factually backed, not speculation.
      4. Oof, this one is bad. You listen to your audience if you want to make a product that you can sell them. This is business 101; make the product people want. It is the MINORITY of "customers" that want games to change directions.
      Finally, I personally like the look of Ciri in the Witcher IV. My only problem is that canonically, Ciri literally can't be a witcher and she has ZERO reason to be. Ciri was literally more powerful than Geralt, as well as too old to become a witcher.

      2. It has nothing to do with wokeness. It is interesting that if you can choose between a male and a female main character, many players choose the male one even if in canon the main character is female.
      3. You do not seem to understand why attracting a new audience is important. We are all getting older. If they try to attract a new audience their franchise will die.
      4. There have been cases were the developers have listen to the audience, but the end product was a complete failure. It is true that nowadays developers nearly all over the world try to appease minorities, even if the demand for that appeasement does not come from any minoritry but from activist who believe that they help minorities with those demands.
      5. Really? In one of the endings of Witcher III Ciri becomes a Witcher. We even know from the novels that she was trained as one. As far as I know there is nothing in the lore which says that women cannot be witchers.

    Motion capture gets very wonky if the face of the character and the actor is too different. More mocap = character will look more like their actor, so that their performance gets captured correctly. That's what I was told by actual developers the first time people lost their minds about changes to a female character's face. She is also a few years older, but that's more a convenient excuse to adjust the 3D model to the new actress' face.

    I think a lot of the outrage comes down more to the trailer seemingly confirming recent rumors of a few things for instance, cd project red lost a lot of the talent that made the witcher 3, thus the reason why witcher 4 will be on unreal engine 5 instead of red engine. On the website they were pushing the typical we hire for diversity a while back which also ties into trying to replace that lost talent and not having the experience to make another game on the red engine. Then there's the books as someone who played the games and literally owns the books while Sapkowski and Geralt refer to ciri as a "witcher" its because she had the training and the heart of a Witcher or spirit of a Witcher if you will, not because she undertook the trial of the grasses. As the trial is said in canon to kill females 100% and adults 100%, even if you explain this away with "oh but eldar blood" the fact is ciri is already powerful without being made a witcher so why would she bother? "she wanted to follow geralts path" Yeah i doubt it after being hunted across space and time fighting everyday for her life i think any normal sane person would want to retire and even in the books she just goes to another world and ventures off into a "you decide how she lived" ending. I noticed in the trailer that she didn't teleport around either so i suspect she "lost her powers" conveniently enough to make her less powerful. As for how she looks can you really blame people for being upset, again using witcher mutations and her face looking (more masculine) further confirms in some peoples minds that this is just DA:V (dragon age veilguard) all over again keep in mind a lot of people said "oh its just grifters and dumb people what does woke even mean" yeah well that aged terribly as DA:V in terms of sales and mass returns (gamestop) for those who tried it anyway is a flop, that game should win the award for the weakest writing ever seen. And seeing as bioware had the exact same situation happen (the talent leaving and the company diversity hiring) naturally people are going to fear the worst. Any fan of the Witcher wants the Witcher 4 to be good, but there's been a lot of disappointments in the gaming industry lately. So you cant blame people for being cautious or even paranoid. In the end it comes down to on both sides we hope the witcher 4 will be great. Also a side note from what i remember the new game director for the witcher 4 is the previous lead art animator which is like promoting a construction worker to do a computer programing job. So there's that too. Also don't forget "Cyberclunk 2077" over hyped the game, made promises they never delivered on, and launched it as a buggy mess so there's that too, yes they might have done a lot of fixing it up over the past two years but you don't get recognition for something you should have done in the first place. And for the record Ciri is a great character i didn't mind playing her in the witcher 3, i really hope they stick close to who she was in previous games and books so its the same Ciri we all appreciate, and not some DA:V level character degradation.

      The problem of hiring for diversity and hiring girls, in my opinion, should be put into context.
      We are talking about Poland, an extremely traditionalist country with a large gap between men and women...
      In most cases, a woman there does not even have the opportunity to be evaluated for her skills, they stop at the fact that she is a woman and therefore inferior (because unfortunately this is what happens in many countries in Central Europe)... Just think of the positions taken by Janus Korwin Mikke.
      Then many complain about inexperience, but it must be said that people have to start somewhere. At the beginning of a career, everyone has made mistakes or was inexperienced.
      It must be said that if they hired people just for activism, that's a different story.
      Undoubtedly, we must be careful, but I don't want to tar everyone with the same brush and lose all hope in CD Projekt Red.

    I agree with GB's assessment 100%. Just honing on Ciri being ugly in cinematic, watch TW3 first trailer of Geralt and then compare to in-game. Nothing is set in stone what the final product is like. In fact I like Ciri's look in the cinematic as she looks older and well mutation does alter looks a bit.
    Honestly, most of us cannot wait when TW4 comes out is just a few that are against TW4, specifically against Ciri they know they are minority thus have to be noisy.

    Well if the devs are waiting for a new audience then they could end up losing all. The people who invest in the Witcher are fans of the stories. Lose them and then their ‘word of mouth’ will make or break the game. No one wants the mediocrity and virtue signalling. I don’t want corporations telling me how to think. So if the reviewers I trust tell me this game has been gutted of Sapkowski’s world and lore then I simply won’t buy it. However, watching this trailer I was pleasantly surprised. Unlike Phantom Liberty which detracted from Cyberpunk 2077’s excellent storyline.

    CDPR team is totally different, OG members replaced with activists, working with Sweetbaby, one of the members claimed they wanted to punch gamers. They stated they wanted a new modern audience. Pair this with Ciri’s face being kinda puffed up like she got botox and having a sort of angry girl boss attitude at the end of the trailer. Just red flags all over the place. It’s still too early but we’ll see.
    I’m gonna say one thing, I know one other company that talked down on gamers and their stock numbers have plummeted HARD. CDPR is walking on thin ice. I’m not sure what will happen and I am skeptical but hopefully stuff will change and they’ll turn things around.

    The issue comes from multiple different angles here.
    First of all, 2024 was a clusterfuck of overly woke and DEI-stuffed games. Having another male character erased to make space for a female character is... bad timing at least.
    Another thing is the "ugly" Ciri. She's not ugly like you might understand it. Ciri had really attractive and feminine traits though. Those got completely erased. It's hard to point it out specifically, but she absolutely lost femininity. That isn't just adding 10 or 20 years. Reminds me a bit of Aloy in Horizon. Her face got "uglified" as well. Looking more bulky, wider.
    Lastly Geralt is a beloved character. It always sucks when you lose the definition of what a series is. It's like swapping out Master Chief in Halo or taking Mario out of a Mario game. It'll always get you negativity in response.
    That combined with the hiring of well known activists, having employees who want to "punch gamers" and all the other bits and pieces, it just doesn't instill confidence in a great next title. Yes, some people go a little far. I don't think it's coming from a wrong place though. Lots of people just loved the experience in the game so far and just want it to continue as a great series.

      1, Geralt retired in tw3 all the way back in 2015. Ciri isn’t replacing him, she is his successor. This has been known for almost a decade. How can you call this bad timing lol? People had 9 years of warning
      2, it literally doesn’t matter what ciri looks like in the trailer as Witcher trailer models are never representative of the actual game. Being mad about how ciri looks is just stupid because no one knows what ciri will look like, I doubt even cdpr do this early on as her model almost certainly isn’t finalized.
      3, I don’t agree that most of the criticism is coming from a good place either. Most people complaining didn’t even know Geralt retired in tw3. That means they either didn’t bother finishing the game or never played it at all. And honestly I get it, outrage is fun. It’s fun to hate on things and feel self righteous

    Ciri game endings: Lost to The White Frost. Queen of Centra. Be a Monster Hunter. These outcomes being Geralt's dialogues with Ciri. The DEVs chose the latter ,except they made her a Witcher when it was made clear no female physiology could survive the trial of the grasses and very few males did.. That I think is where the disappointment and controversy comes from. Promoting this new game as School of The Link, and Witcher IV was a mistake, Maybe players ignorant of the books and Witcher lore will buy and have no questions about it. BTW: Men are from Mars. Women are from Venus.

      No female have so far survived, but Ciri is also not a normal girl/women, wich is fully thanks to her elderblood. So if anyone can survive it would make sence it would be her. Probably magic involved aswell to make it work. Like help from very powerfull och skilled sorceresses.

    The problems are with the new Ciri is why she has to be the copy of geralt with scar on face and grey hair and why she stuggling with lack of power when witchers use lighting fast reflexes to kill monsters and not pure strenght? plus so many other franchises try to push their dei agenda in your face nowdays that it now backfires on every single one of them!

    • @marty.m2933
      @marty.m2933 21 день назад +3

      Well...as for her hair, it's just hers (eventhough hers are gray while Geralt's are more like white), as for the scar, she got it in the books and it was quite a blow And big charakter moment for her (actually, Geralt was thé one WHO didn't have any there originally). And finally - the problem wouldn't be so much physical strength, but rather speed and reflexes (possibly resistance to poisons, etc.)

      @@levtak8030 Then focus on things they're actually doing wrong as a result of obsession with dei. I feel like people are losing the plot a little.
      DEI is a red herring, the real issue is that people pushing it generally do a bad job and negatively affect games. There is nothing inherently bad about diversity, the word just became a dog whistle.
      So wait until they actually screw something up before complaining. Otherwise you're really looking like haters. It very well could be a BG3 case where it's inclusive but good.

  • @seleckt6600
    @seleckt6600 21 день назад +2

    The outrage isn't about ciri being the main character. It's that she's a witcher. The trial of grasses has an abysmal survival rate for any adult, and a zero percent survival rate for women. This is why there are no female witchers. Now, all of a sudden, out of the blue ciri is a witcher. The very first female witcher in history to survive the trial of grasses. How? Why? This is a pretty big part of the lore. Oh, because CDPR isn't looking for existing players, they want new players. Well, what new players? Those who don't know about this lore? Why? And what are they aiming for with a "new audience"?

    • @marty.m2933
      @marty.m2933 21 день назад

      Excuse me, but can I ask - are you reta*ded? I'm asking just because it was covered in the video and you can even read the article aswell. They clearly said they wanted to attract new players, because that's kind of the goal of game companies in general. Doesn't mean they don't want the old ones. What don't you understand about that? Or like, when they repeatedly said the SAME thing after Witcher 2 and before realese of Witcher 3, you think that meant they were rejecting old players and were only interested in new ones, or what kind of logic is that?
      As for the lore: how did she survive? I don't know, the Elder Blood? Or some modified version of the mutagenic trials from the Lynx school? She get special help or upgrade of trials from Avallach? I don't know, and I won't know until the game comes out.
      First of all, though - CDPR makes changes to lore all the time. For example, they absolutely revamped the whole concept of white frost, which I think is a much more fundamental change to both lore and story. The fact that the women never survived was never even that crucial. I'd understand the outrage if Ciri wasn't a bred brood of genetic super-elf Larra Dorren with insane powers, and was just a random new female character.

      I do not understand why people are complaying about Ciri being a witcheresses and that it is against lore. None of the wither games are not part of the original lore and the very first game started with the biggest recon ever when they resurrected Geralt.
      Usage of potions, alchemy, witchers signs, mutagens is a core game mechanics of the witcher games. After the Second Conjunction of the Spheres (end of Witcher 3) Ciri also lost most of her powers so if she is supposed to be next main protagonist (which I and many more people were praing for) then these issues had to be somehow addressed.
      I think that Witcher 4 adopt fan-created lore where after the Second Conjunction of the Spheres and the influx of new waves of monsters into the world, due to the rising demand for witchers, advancements regarding the mutation formula for women were made which led to the creation of the first generation of true witcheresses. Thanks to that a few new witcher shools were established, among them also School of the Lynx founded by Lambert & Keira. (check the The Witcher Fanon Wikia for more info).

    • @ablackknight2744
      @ablackknight2744 21 день назад +5

      It's not all of a sudden, she was always meant to be a witcher by profession. If you're speaking strictly about the trial, it's not really a stretch to come out with some bs explanation considering her lineage, We always hear about how special her blood is, so would it be unrealistic to claim it allowed her to survive the mutations?

    • @damned0wl
      @damned0wl 21 день назад +4

      Nothing in the lore says that female witchers are impossible. The witchers and Triss in the books did think about putting Ciri through the Trial of the Grasses - though they didn't have the knowledge to do it. If it was known that girls can never survive, why would they even consider it?
      The process may have to be modified for female anatomy, but at this point the Trial of the Grasses pretty much has to be reinvented to create any new witchers at all anyway. Ciri becoming a witcher doesn't break the lore, it just has to be sufficiently explained - and seems pretty obvious that it will be, since her going through the Trial will be part of the game.
      And a "new audience" means just that. It's been a decade since the last game came out, of course there will be new people getting into the franchise. Just like all the people who only played Wild Hunt are still new, lol. Should CDPR be aiming exclusively for the OG Polish fans of the books and no one else? I get that people are sick of all the "modern audiences" talk, but a new audience doesn't automatically mean a different KIND of audience. We'll just have to wait and see.
