This is just about the best instructional video channel on RUclips. He does everything right: No annoying background music! He clearly describes what he is doing in a post filming voice-over NOT while he is painting...recognizing, rightly, how difficult it is to do both at the same time ! He speaks slowly and distinctly. He shows us his reference photo as he does the work. Bravo!
I’ve just picked up the paintbrush I dropped forty years ago... I’ve embarked on a journey of discovery and practice. I copy a masterwork, twice, then a third time with me in the picture! Just doing my first one, and have learnt so much. Definitely the way to go for me. Thanks for all your videos.
Thank you for sharing this exercise, your process and thoughts! I would really love watching you livestream another master copy or just another painting!
I've painted a lot of master copies, but felt so inspired and informed watching yours. I cannot wait to add this into my quarantine routine! Thank you for making this video.
YES, I would like to watch a live stream, length isn’t an issue. Would be helpful for a split screen showing palette and canvas work. Thank you for your time and instruction. Stay well.
I love when you makes us see how different lines and shapes line up with eachother, and makes us notice techniques he uses like carving out the silhouette with the background color.
Your video always manages to be incredibly succinct and yet densely packed with information. Really appreciate your thoughts and process in master studies!
This was awesome, and insightful, and the commentary had the most perfect information about your thoughts and efforts while working through this process. Would love to see more of these.
Thank you for this. Just finished an attempt at a copy of Singer Sargent and realised from watching this that I should have tried a "massing technique". I learned a lot from your lesson.
Thank you so much for sharing this video. I'm learning a lot. I'd watch a (saved) live stream in bits since I'm one of the lucky ones who is still working full time during this crisis. Again, thank you very much for sharing.
You're extremely based and know what you're talking about with art, much respect. I'm learning concept art and the more I do this kind of work the more I fall in love with it compared to working digitally, but they both have their advantages. Thanks chief.
Adding your new video being released to the (very short) list of beneficial side effects of this lockdown situation. Thanks Alex your tutorials have helped me more than any I’ve found, from here in Philadelphia please stay safe ✌🏼👍🏼
Though I'm not an oil painter, I've been interested in and studying portraiture lately and your tips for placement of elements and shapes, highlights, etc. is most helpful. I'll be able to use them in my drawings and eventually in watercolor (when I get the nerve). Thank you!
Your videos are always so helpful. Thank you so much. I plan on incorporating these ideas, especially the tip about your ability to do a master copy not being reliant on knowing perfectly the techniques of the original painter, to my own paintings.
thank you very much for your sharing John Singer Sargent copy. would be very pleased to see the whole painting even 5 hours long and also the palette and the brushes used.
Sir - this lockdown situation is a downer - or rather is WAS a downer until stumbling upon you and your instructional videos and magnificent talent. Thanks so so much for putting these out there - and best to you and yours from a fan in Los Angeles! Hopefully art will carry us through these times!
Hi, Alex! I just recently found your channel and I must say that I am really impressed with how much info I got from watching your videos. I am a 2D/3D artist working in the gaming industry, and well pass my beginner/learning faze, but as everyone knows (I hope), you should never stop learning. For me, what you are teaching is the hardest thing an artist faces: simplifying. This is the one thing that will help you grow as an artist, more than maybe any other thing. I just subscribed to your Patreon page, and I hope others will do too. Keep it up, really great info. Thank you.
Well Done! Thank you so much. My mass drawing course is all about teaching people how to simplify. It's really basic exercises, but it's the only way I know how to show people how to actually see and do it. Simplify the shapes and compress the values. And even tho the exercises are basic, the principles apply to every subject. When I'm teaching, I'm still always repeating to my more advanced portrait students, they exact same things I told them when they started my mass drawing course.
loved your lesson. and yes I would like to see your painting in live stream so i can see your strokes color mixing and other things are important . thanks.

Sadly, Alex intentionally hides the pallet.
