This is just about the best instructional video channel on RUclips.
    He does everything right:
    No annoying background music!
He clearly describes what he is doing in a post filming voice-over NOT while he is painting...recognizing, rightly, how difficult it is to do both at the same time !
    He speaks slowly and distinctly.
He shows us his reference photo as he does the work.
    Bravo!

I’ve just picked up the paintbrush I dropped forty years ago... I’ve embarked on a journey of discovery and practice. I copy a masterwork, twice, then a third time with me in the picture! Thank you. Yes, that is unfortunately still the case with art schools in the mainstream university system. But in recent years, thanks to being able to find good teachers on the internet, more and more people have been learning to paint from life properly. There are certainly more teachers around today in the UK, than there were back when I started training in 2004. So the situation is improving. Whereabouts are you? Have you heard of the Art Renewal Centre? They have a list of teachers and schools all over the world who specialise in teaching representational art:

I decided to take a leave of absence from my Art degree, final year for my mental health, just before the lockdown happened. After 3 years of painting and only painting, I really thought I needed a break - i've spent the past 3 months just finding comfort in everything else other than art. But now, I literally can't satiate it in any other way. Strangely I've never followed YT tutorials before, and still I know that I have a lot to learn from basic flesh tone palettes etc. Honestly your videos are really helping me rn :) I've gotten so lost in my process or working in more of a surrealist/abstract way, mentally it's crippled me haha, this is such a lovely break to paint logically. Thank you for your videos !

But then there's also deciding "what" to paint. Which never get's any easier. Anyway, best of luck with it all.

Well Done! Thank you so much. My mass drawing course is all about teaching people how to simplify. It's really basic exercises, but it's the only way I know how to show people how to actually see and do it. Simplify the shapes and compress the values. And even tho the exercises are basic, the principles apply to every subject. When I'm teaching, I'm still always repeating to my more advanced portrait students, they exact same things I told them when they started my mass drawing course.

Thank you so much for sharing this video. I'm learning a lot. I'd watch a (saved) live stream in bits since I'm one of the lucky ones who is still working full time during this crisis. Again, thank you very much for sharing.
