What I remember most of Suffolk County in Long Island is when I use to travel around the upper number exits and how less of demand the areas was. It was quite open and had this beautiful rural feel towards it. There was less traffic, less congestion, less activity just about all around. But that led to less demand on maintaining I-495 and local roads. I recall when you hit around the 60s-70s exit ramps that the landscaping and interstate pavement weren't managed properly for years. One time, the pavement was so damaged, that my suspension and rack & pinion had to be replaced on my car. Looks like the landscaping improved, but the pavement could be serviced better. But I can say it was better then it was decades ago
I'm in between the 50s and 70s, and the roads are dog shit. The way I see it is, the closer you get to New York City, the better this interstate gets at the cost of more idiot drivers.
That’s the general trend as you move away from the city. Very congested and crowded through Queens, starts to space out and speed up as you go through Nassau, and really opens up the further you go into Suffolk. That’s just the stark difference in population density. It’s a very interesting roadway for that reason.
I own a Home in Shirley and travel these roads often except in the winter time then I go too my home in Sacramento the summers are better on Long Island. Be well everyone and stay safe
The number of times I've been out to Riverhead and all the way back to the Midtown tunnel I could drive this road with my eyes closed. Thanks for posting this up! Goes from Pine barrens to slicing across some of the densest parts of Queens.
OH MY GOD, the Long Island Expressway has changed a lot, new lights, expanded lanes and most important, electronic tolls on the Queens, Midtown tunnel, the very last time my mother {now deceased} went to that expressway was in May 1984, this is a super magnificent traveling westbound on the Long Island Expressway video!!
This video brings back a lot of great memories from where I grew up in Suffolk, now in Florida. I've done this drive many times mostly from exit 62 into the city. thank you for this.
Interstate 495 was planned to be extended to southeastern Connecticut to meet Interstate 95 but only one section of it was built and it is now part of state route 349.
Nice 6 lane highway in far western Suffolk County LI and hardly a vehicle in site in either direction but then the buildup as you go east. I love the drive coming in from the west as the Big Apple does look VERY BIG! GREAT VIDEO!!!
This was great , grew up in Brentwood, worked in riverhead McDonald's on middle country rd so traveled this a lot we are now in Tn since '84, loved seeing all the exits ....😊
Thanks, Mike! A video extremely useful for reference / historical purposes, and also for anyone who has NOT driven the road, and wants to see certain points in preparation for a drive. I use GPS minimially, if at all, and rather go by signage. Seeing this first gives a sense of de je vu, and always someone who hasn't been there before to recognize the exits. I must say, I've been to Long Island twice driving, and both times needed someone in the passenger seat to navigate through the City. I am dumbfounded how light and serene this traffic is! Sunday morning at 5:30 AM????
Because I-495 was supposed to go thru Midtown Manhattan as an Expressway and connect with the Lincoln Tunnel and head towards the Meadowlands, but local opposition from the NIMBYs ruined it.
@@ryanearles2024 you realise Robert Moses would have destroyed blocks and blocks of some of the most expensive real estate in the world for what some reports say would have been a 10 lane expressway 10 storeys in the air.
Originally the Long Island Expressway was supposed to go all the way to New London/Groton CT or Westerly RI. That's why it's 6 lanes at its beginning and not 4 or even 2.
Now we're talking. I've never done the LIE beginning to end because I live in Western Suffolk, but have gone all the way to the East End and taken it all the way to the city before. If coming from the east, I always use exit 53 and take either Sagtikos Parkway or Commack Road home. If coming from the west, I used to use exit 51 for Deer Park Avenue but now continue on to Sagtikos or Commack Road because I recently moved.
From Selden too, grandfather had a summer bungalow built around '47 or so & brought my dad & family out from Queens for the summers, most definitely farmland, then they moved permanently around '54...my dad & mom bought the house from the grandparents around '62 and my brother & I grew up in it...off Middle Country near the beer distributor & the original King Kullen shopping center. Wild.
1:02:51 why is there a TO WEST 495 sign? doesn't 495 end after the midtown tunnel? Or was it a sign from the old days when the lincoln tunnel was also called I-495?
You should take "495" across Manhattan to connect I-495 and the Queens-Midtown Tunner to NJ-495 and the Lincoln Tunnel, and out to I-95 and NJ-3 in NJ.
I've only seen the first 10 minutes or so up to now, and the scenery reminds me of rural motorways in the UK; none of those annoying gaudy signs everywhere. I also noticed the low speed limit - and that you were going quite a bit faster, assuming the video is in real time!
@Jim Allen I don't "do" kph!! Based on the time from when Mike passed a 1&1/2 miles to an exit sign to when he reached the exit, I calculated it was about 70 he was doing.
It changes drastically the further west you get. That part of Long Island is much more sparsely populated and there's a lot of farmland in that area. Once you get to the end of the video, you're in New York City and it's as urban as you can get.
The 55 mph speed limit is actually a historical quirk of the 1970s oil crisis when the feds required all states to max their speeds at 55 mph. New York, in typical fashion, never increased the limit after the energy crisis passed and just left it at 55. Of course, no one travels that slow on those road, with the general flow being 70-75mph. Driven past cops regularly going 75 and never been ticketed.

There's probably a lot more traffic usually compared to when I filmed it. That would be my guess.
@JimAllen-Persona-495 in NYC proper is only 50. In fact, the maximum speed limit for any road in NYC proper can only go up to 50.
What is that extra lane for?
