"More money than good sense"- ha ha ha ha ha! Cracked me up, Dave!
I've watched you for years Dave, thank you so much for the free content you put out, I've learned so many things!
Thanks, Dave. I'm going to watch this a few more times and go try it outside. I wish I'd known how to do this years ago. All the info - proper stake making, placement (including double staking) and knots have been very helpful. I grew up as a Girl Scout, even taking part a couple summers leading a back packing unit into the Olympics. I knew there was a LOT I didn't know and didn't know where to go to fill in the holes. Your RUclips vids are doing that. Thanks for some awesome and practical teaching.
Dave, the times over the years I told that you are among few best RUclips channels ever and I will say it again today. Thank you for this content. Short, simple, no bullshit, no nonsense. Just great, informative, smart stuff. And useful.
Points so so, Wedges are good, Nice presentation: Stakes with wedges steer when they go into the ground, packing down the earth on the wedge side and holding side pressure. Same technique I (we) use building trail features like turnpiking, staking the wings on approaches to bridges, etc. Pretty sure it's mentioned in the AMC's trail building and maintenance book.
Enjoyed the video. Lots of useful pointers around what first seemed a basic subject.
excellent demonstration of some simple techniques. Thanks again!
Excellent choice! It's good to teach the basics as well!
"If you have more money than good sense" that made me laugh out loud, zing nice one Dave
Great idea to use a double stake or picket if in extreme windy or sandy ground set up! Thank you!
Simple and to the point video. Nice job.
Looking great! Excellent presentation.
Hey Dave great video keep making them!
Nice tutorial.
simple, pragmatic and so awesome...thx dave
I have been watching uou since 2011 and I always learn something new, many thanks my friend.
This is such a good and useful knowledge and skill. The planned and deliberate making of a skill set that is designed and engineered to be effective, useful, efficient, teachable and do-able. That was like a gourmet meal that filled me up with something good and satisfying. Thanks Dave.
I always look forward to your videos Dave. I will be going to the boundary waters next spring with my father and your videos have been instrumental in our preparations.
Well done as usual Dave, great demo
Thanks brother, good to have you around
always around my friend. and my mom always said, call a spade a spade Derek. so there it is....as I have said before, you are a tough act to follow brother. continued best wishes....certainly well deserved ; )
Dave, would you do some hunting videos? I know the actual doing of it needs practice (stalking, shooting, etc...), but demonstrating the first steps would be very helpful.

Really great and useful video Dave
Very good information Dave
Great video, very helpful Dave. Thanks
very timely video, thanks for dropping some science!
great video your helping me be more prepared
Great video Dave! Thanks!
Thanks for the video, good presentation.
You're the man, Dave, plain and simple...
Thanks Dave!
thanks Dave for the video!
Good info Dave, thanks.
Exccellent ! Thank you
Great video! Thank you sir!
Great video, thanks for sharing,
What is your purpose for using a cloth tarp instead of a plastic tarp? I love your videos and I hope you keep making them for a long time. I like how you break everything down to the smallest pieces. Most would just assume people knew how to use stakes "its easy right" but its usually the small things that eventually get you killed.
Great info Dave
well presented. easier is ALWAYS better!
very informative video, well done
Great video, enjoyed it!
Great stuff, thank you.
thank you brother
Love your videos Dave, keep up the good work!
this is good stuff, thanks.
Great topic, you're right, this isn't talked about at all.
Great info Dave. I wonder if it would be easier to show some of these knots if you used brightly colored para cord just for demonstration purposes?
Only issue with having your ridge line on the inside is if its raining heavy the ridge line will wick moisture to the middle and drip onto you. isnt a big issue unless you use down!
tie a shoelace to the ridgeline and the water will drip down that and not onto you
buddy mo Put cordage on each side of the tarp and the rain will drip down the excess line
run the ridge line at a slope.
as the other say, drip line and ur good
Nice
Makes it look easy... now to DO it about a hundred times to MAKE it easy!

Very informative video as always - thank you. Not to change the subject, but is that a Victorinox Soldier you are using? I like folding knives with saws and I couldn't quite tell if that was a Soldier or not.
do you think you will be doing a multi-tool kind of video, like talking over different multi-tools and giving your views on how useful they are?
Dave great video
sometimes I have another problem a stak my tarp down and then the wind and the rain softens the ground and causes my stakes to pull out. Do you have a staking solution for that. I have used rocks to tie to but sometimes rocks are hard to find on the tundra in the places where I hunt, also trees are scarce in central Alaska.
Dave, how do you prevent the ridge line from acting as a wick during heavy rain? I have always understood that to be the purpose of using the ridge line above the tarp. Thanks!
What folding knife is Dave using in this video? Looks like it has a saw attached with it I thought Dave mentioned there was a company in Alabama that made folding knives with saw blades thanks guys
I'm gonna have to watch this on a bigger screen to see how you tied those knots.
dave, I have a camping spot the i go to with my friends often. we set up a tarp over are cooking and meal area but one of the corners of the tarp is typically close to the gravel trail passing through the site. there is no good tie off point for 40 or 50 feet so we are forced to peg into the hard ground. do you have any advice on a good method for pegging into hard ground?
Having the ridgeline under the tarp does allow rain to run down the line into your bedroll.
Anyone know what model knife Dave is using here as in the pocket knife with the woodgrain?
Hey Dave, can you tell me what's the shape of your axe you use at 5:36 please?
is that a council tool axe?
Dave what model Swiss Army knife are you using? Saw it in another of your videos and looked like an interesting model. TAI.
It's a Victorinox Rangerwood 55
RenThraysk Thanks
hey rufus
Dave, I know you probably did a video but I can't find it... How do you pack your backpack for this style of camping? Thanks! 🌞
his books are a great resource for your question.
Heaviest stuff as close to your shoulder blades as you cat get it, lightest stuff at the bottom and around the heavy stuff.
I like the pooch.
Amazing video as usual. I have a question that i thought you would be able to answer. I am new to bow making from wood. i have made many bows out of PVC pipe. recently i made my first bow out of wood. It looks nice. but the wood I used is not the best. after stringing it the wood bent into the shape i strung it at and stays that way after un stringing it. Do you know what kind of tree would be perfect for me as a beginner living in Michigan U.S for making bows.
Thanks
What's the name of your dog ?
Rufess, Rufus rufes something like that lol
