I would argue that it is perpetually Maltese in the way the melody moves up and down. He's found that sweet spot in his voice register and places the melodies there (it's in the baryton vocal range), and it really, really works. I love Matt as a vocalist, and I also really really like how he constructs a melody. As for if it is similar to "less and less"? lyrically, certainly not, as you've pointed out. Melodically I can see the case for it.
