  • I never knew about this game until a few months ago. I admit that I don't follow games that I feel as quote "casual". However, when I was exploring the various OEM installations of WinXP, Flux was on one of them. I tried it out, and I can say with confidence that this is now one of my favorite games.
Developed by MasterWorks Software, it's a game where you simply match gems together before they disappear. That alone in itself isn't the most engaging of details. But this game is all about presentation. There are various killer soundtracks by many artist like Reptile&Sky, Rapture,Awesome, S-Trance, Nightbeat, Nobuyuki, DJ Babs, Vermillion-X, Dreamsection, and Ferando Pereira. I wouldn't be surprised if a fair number of these artist were involved in the Amiga tracker scene, because the music just sounds that amazing. The music has a very much "Amiga" feel to it.
Flux has very amazing graphics and really awesome effects. With many options to choose from, including various gem shapes and grid sizes, one can create really epic explosions in no time. I am hooked to it now. Just make sure the system volume is lowered before playing Flux.
There is a massive problem though. Flux does not like modern CPU's. Playing this on your native host or a virtual machine will crash constantly and give a "Divide By Zero" error. I guess this has something to do with how the game logic is very tied down to the CPU instruction sets. Thus, if you want to play Flux and enjoy the epic explosions without constant crashing, you will need to run the game in 86Box. Don't worry though, it runs very well indeed.
86Box is emulating a multimedia PC with an ASUS P5A motherboard, AMD K6-III+ processor running at 200MHz, and 128MB's of RAM. Also equipped is a 3DFX Voodoo3 1000 GPU with Windows running at the screen resolution of 800 by 600, 16-bit color depth. Also installed is an AMD PCnet-PCI II NIC (PCAP) for network support, along with a Ensoniq AudioPCI (ES1371) audio adapter. There is a CD-ROM drive and a 16GB hard disk image, and Windows ME is installed.

It sure does. For someone who had no expectations on either game play or music, this game is epic at both!
