    I saw Jumpin Johnny play for the Baltimore Bullets. One time the Bullets center got injured and Green had to play center against Wilt Chamberlain. He scored 20 points on Wilt in one quarter. He was dunking all in Wilt's face.

    Thank you for always shedding some light on these lesser known players from a lesser known baketball era. Great video. I don't believe I've ever heard of Johnny Green before, sure looks like a great athlete and a pretty good player, who started to play at an already advanced age but kept producing on the court into his late 30's.

    At the young age of 12 I was very fortunate to attend my FIRST NBA basketball game in 1971 between February and March. My basketball coach Mr Sanchez, had two tickets for a Friday evening game at the Seattle Center Coliseum. He wasn't able to attend so his Son, (we were team mates and good friends as well), went to the game. It was the Supersonics vs the then Cincinnati Royals. The Royals line up consisted of Sam Lacey, Johnny Green, Jerry Lucas, and one of the Van Arsdale brothers and a rookie named Nate "tiny Archibald who could hit a jump shot from ANY where on the court. The Sonics had Lenny Wilkins, Dick Snyder, Pete Cross, Bob Rule, Lee Winfield and NEWLY aquired Spencer Haywood from the ABA Denver Rockets, (thanks to the late Sam Schulmen). The game was VERY entertaining and I don't recall there was ever a dull moment throughout the evening. In my memory, the two players that stood out were Nate Archibald for the Royals and Spencer Haywood for the Sonics hands down!! The game went into overtime and the Sonics pulled out a victory.

    As a kid saw Green play with Knicks at the Garden during perennial loserl years - the one bright light (ok - we had Richie Guerin, too) on a sad sad, but lovable team.

    MSU produced two of the greatest leapers in NBA history in Johnny Green and Jason Richardson. Green was also one of the oldest players in NBA history when he played his final seasons at age 38-39 (although since then numerous players have surpassed that mark , including MSU alum Kevin Willis).

    I had never heard of Johnny Green, but it's amazing to see such a superlative athlete running the fast break so smoothly. If you hadn't mentioned it, I don't think any one would have guessed that he was introduced to basketball at such a late age.

    People who played with Green say that even Dr J wasn't in the same league as Johnny Green when it came to jumping ability. This guy really could get the top of the backboard at only 6'5". I remember imitating him in high school. He had a real soft stride like his feet weren't even touching the ground when he ran.

    • @ebookpioneers
      @ebookpioneers 7 лет назад +1

      Everybody that knew both him and Dr. J and David Thompson says Green could not only get higher, but considerably so. Name one person who knew them all who says otherwise. Until then you're just blowing smoke.

    He's one of the reasons I don't have much respect for young 'fans' opinions regarding the best ever or the quality of players before their time.
    A true student of the game would do the research and know about every player who ever played in the past. 75 years is not that much time.
    Some, not all, but SOME are content to wallow in their ignorance.
    I actually had the chance to watch Johnny play with the Kansas City/Omaha Kings in 72-73...LIVE, for about 16-17 games. He was at the end of his career, but was still a force to be reckoned with. Played with Tiny (as he led the league in scoring AND assists), and Sam Lacey, another great player that doesn't get his due, and they never made the playoffs. THAT'S how competitive the league was then. THAT was how deep every team was. Fewer teams but no room for a bunch of guys that never played more than one year, or accomplished anything, in college.

    Hi Wilt Chamberlain Archive. First off thanks a lot for your videos, its always a pleasure to watch them. My question is do you have any highlights of games past the 72-73 season. If not do you have any more dunk highlights from the early 70's like randy smith. What about guys from the aba....like darnell hillman. Thanks again, love how your showing the history of the nba.

    So many great players in the 50s like Jumpin' Johnny who should've been inducted in the Hall of Fame a long ago. Max Zalofsky, Bob Feerick, Rudy Larusso, Dick Barnett, Bob Boozer and Larry Foust are a few of them - hell, even Whitey von Nieda should be in there now that he's the first and only former player to reach the centennial milestone so far

    In college Johnny Green got lots of points on what would be called offensive basket interference now -- he used to jump up when teammates took shots and when they were rolling around the rim, jam them in. Or just grab them out of mid-air and slam it (an "alley oop" except off a shot). Wilt and Russell also scored a lot this way. About 1960 the NBA and NCAA decided to crack down hard on offensive goaltending and put in the "cylinder" rule.
    Ironically, international basketball with FIBA allowed a lot of what would be in the US considered basket interference until the 1980s. If a shot was rolling around the rim you could jump up and jam it -- or on defense, grab it off.

    • @Nuvendil
      @Nuvendil 4 года назад

      Actually, offensive goaltending was banned in the NBA in 1956. But yes, they were concerned over Chamberlain and Russell and similar guys
