Hi All, as an owner of a manual 2017, 718 Porsche 2.0 and previous owner of a 2010 Boxster S I can tell you all categorically the 718 is just miles miles better. I like you all watched all the you tube videos and read the reviews on the 718 and very nearly ruled it out in favour of a last gen flat 6 because of the so called lack of sound. The fact is it sounds just amazing and blows the old gen cars sideways for handling and speed and still very much gives you that magic adrenalin feeling. You tube just cannot capture the sound and emotion and yes compared to an Avendator it is quiet. I have never commented on any video or posted anything on a forum ever however hope this helps someone get their dream car as Porsche really has smashed it!
I almost didn't purchase my 2018 718 Boxster GTS because of all the people doing the sound test. This 718 is my replacement for my 2006 Caymans S. The dealership that I purchased the 718 from also had a 2014 Cayman S. So I test drove them back to back. Yes the CS sounded great but the generation difference was definitely noticeable. I loved the steering feel in the 718, the 981 felt muted and the 718 felt spicy. Neither had the feel of the 987, but the 718 was more predictable and felt more agile in the steering department. Then there's the engine issue. Twice in 2017 I rented a 718 boxster, once for my bday and I still had my 987 at the time. I loved it. Including the engine and the PDK. The 2.0 with PDK felt great and to me at full bore, it sounds great too. Way faster than my 987 6speed. The 981 was great too, but this 718 GTS is absolute excellence. Better than all of my previous Porsche, I had a 987.1 S, a 1985 911 Carerra Coupe and a 1991 911 Coupe. The 718 is way better than any of those cars. I LOVE THE 2.5!
@@gregalanbell I agree! I have had my 718 with a PDK for 2 1/2 years. I have had a lot of fun, fast and exciting cars and this one fulfills everything I need. I am not concerned with whether it “sounds“ proper. It still sounds better than 99% of the cars out there and I like the way it sounds. I used to have an AP2 S2000 which was more fun to drive but so is a go cart. They are about equally as comfortable on any trip over an hour. Not true with the 718. And, I am not saying that the 718 is a plush luxury cushiony car, it is a load of fun. But, it is so much more comfortable than many harsh sports cars. To me, it is the perfect sports car. Period.
For those of you complaining about this car having 4-cylinders, Europe is putting higher taxes and penalties on cars with higher emissions and fuel consumption. Porsche is doing what they can to preserve the sports car experience, all the while changing with the times. We should be thankful they are thinking along these lines.
MikeJ well they need to make money. I hate suvs as well, but there are many idiots that buy them. And Porsche was one of the first to jump on the Train
BS, Robert. Thankful? We're not Europe, we're the USA. No reason to sell this crap here. And on top of it, they still make the six cylinder for the 911. They could have loaded that up in the Cayman and Boxster. This 4 cy POS sounds like crap. No, we should not be thankful for this.
Gilliam Simmerman +why would Porsche make 2 cars just because u don’t need follow economic rules applied in other countries. U are a classic American ^^
I have one, and I absolutely love it. I have driven it along the BC coast and it’s amazing. Chris is awesome. But anyone here who says that this vehicle is garbage, go to Porsche dealership and drive it, you will fall in love.
Yazeed Saber Not even close. Better car in pretty much any way. Except maybe if you buy this car because of the V6 sound. And if you only want a V6 there are plenty of other cars to consider. The Boxster is better than ever.
Factory exhaust was a fail on Porsches behalf. Thankfully this incredible engine comes alive with the right upgrade. The cars reviews were fairly treated as Porsche made a car without the best note. Many of todays cars are getting ripped off like that due to the emissions regs. Glad the car got a bad wrap as l got into one for a steal. Amazing car & wouldn’t be swapping mine for anything.
It's not garbage and anybody who says so is kidding themselves, the handling I spot on. The base model is laggy. I was going to get a PCP on base but just used my deposit to buy 987.2 Boxster from a franchise with a two year approved warranty. It came with PDK, PASM, Sports Seat Plus, Cornering Xenon & Sat-Nav with iPhone, 19 inch Sport Design alloys (painted Satin Platinum). I had the PSE and Sports Chrono retrofitted. I fitted on Michelin Pilot Sport 4S and it's blindingly quick and with the PSE & Sports on it sounds like an exotic sports car. The only thing I miss is the leather on the dashboard and doors from the S...
UKBall Yeah, it might do that, but you're still in a Golf... Not saying that Golfs or VWs in general are bad, they're actually quite nice imho, and I'd certainly drive one if someone gave it to me, but when you've been sitting in a Porsche once... It's just something else.
UKBall Exacly what iwas stating in comment above this comment. And as a GTI Clubsport owner with DSG, i can tell you i annihalate most things i meet on road in anyhow... ;) Check videos on my channel if you like.
Chris Harris is arguably the best automotive journalist on the planet, and certainly one of the most entertaining. We all wish to have the driving skills he has. Hi, I'm nobody, I have a 718 Boxster(base, 300 horsepower). ,manual transmission(couldn't do it any other way, it's a Porsche, shut up then). I had the old('14) Cayman S with the beautiful-sounding flat six and loved it. And--this 718 is fantastic! Light, agile, fast, fun, and it has major attitude. Begs to be driven hard. Pure joy in the driver's seat. Just sayin'.
Being the owner of a last year GTS I think you are spot on. The fact that one can drive the GTS or the GT4 at 40-50 km/h (24-31 mph) and make a down shift and the sound it makes just gives you a big smile
The Great Chris Harris!!...Damn I wish Harris could do both TG, & new videos on "Chris Harris on cars.. C.H, brother you are easily the best in the business, & have been for years now. Anybody who says otherwise is simply kidding themselves
Comfortably the best - it says it all that you never saw a perfected slide from inside and outside of the car for Top Gear when the old three were involved. They used driving consultants to do the slidey stuff and then got them in to do the reviewing stuff. Makes a mockery of the talent that Chris Harris has. Eloquent yet in complete control, he drives the car rather than the car driving him. Perfect indeed! The OG of Car Reviews: Chris Harris
I Need That Car, oh hell Yes!!..that really is the main reason I've never stopped following Harris's Career. not only does he provide us with clear concise views/opinions on the performance car he's driving at the time, but unlike the majority of car reviewers, He can ACTUALLY drive the car at, or near it's limits on track/circuit like a damn Boss! All the while being naturally humorous, & entertaining..
The Cayman 718 is brilliant!! All this talk about noise is complete and utter nonsense. Try driving a flat 6 in town..it’s far too noisy, your neighbours will hate you. This car is quiet(ish), luxurious and goes like the wind. I’ve had both. This new engine is fantastic and will put a huge smile on your face. Looks amazing, feels amazing, sounds amazing.
Jarrod W I totally agree with you! When they say they missed the noise they know many people take it as an annoying thing especially in a quiet neighborhood or in a busy traffic! I’ve tested the 718 and see nothing wrong with the engine. To me as a mechanical watch collector I can say it is understated, and that’s the way I like it! Fast and good handling in a very graceful manner!
Gotta disagree on that one. Love the noisy GT3RS. Goes like the wind, puts a huge smile on your face and looks feels and sounds amazing. The neighbours love the noise too. Perfect car :)
I like Chris Harris On Cars and Chris Harris Drives more than regular Top Gear because I feel like he's talking to me like a fellow car enthusiast. He's not dumbing it down for a broader audience, he's giving his complete unfiltered reaction.
Almost bought a nicely optioned 2017 Boxster S with 7k miles for $59k....missed out on it when someone scooped it up from under my nose. Kept looking and found a 2013 Boxster S time capsule with (albeit different but likely) more suitable options, nicer wheels, Brombacher exhaust, a rare color combo and only 4,000 miles! Picked it up for $49k. Very happy with the decision. Sure, others can argue that the newer 718 is an overall better car but I don't feel like we're missing out with the 981. A 718 S with a tune would be a considerably faster but not necessarily a better overall Porsche experience. The 718 IS evolution but with less soul. The driving experience/sound with the 981 is simply incredible. Adding the Brombacher tune and filters to get a bit more power and I'm sure this nearly new 981 will be more than satisfying for many years to come.
Oh my God! the Top Gear downvoters have grown up, no more automatic dislikes when a video is posted. I'm so proud of you guys. Oh shit, they are still in the comments section crying about the Clarkson.
I had a hard time deciding between a 2015 and 2019 gts. Test drove both, both had around 20,000 km”s and price was almost identical. The performance in the 2019 was better, yet i decided on the 2015 as i dont race the car, just take the car for a Sunday drive, do afew cars and coffee with the boys and in the end, the difference in sound cant be ignored. I think buying a car like the boxster gts is an emotional one and the 2015 gives you a far more emotional experience, hence that is the one i bought. It is my second car and i plan to keep the car for ten plus years, unless a good 2016 low milage spyder comes along 😀

As an owner of a 987 Boxster and then a 987 Cayman, thank you CHRIS HARRIS for articulating all my concerns with the new Flat-4T. Everyone else is giving Porsche a pass on this one because it's quicker. But that's not everything. That's not what these cars were about. And they've lost it now.
IDk why everyone always comments on the presenter as opposed to the subject. Any case, I agree with Harris. I'd take the 981 six over the 718 four any day.
Do all youtube car reviewers just watch each others reviews and then just say the same thing!? Everyone banging on about the engine noise is just boring. I speak as someone that's owned a Boxster 987 and am about to buy a Boxster 718. Comparing the two: - new Boxster looks far better - 718 will be newer and more reliable - 718 performance is FAR better. I would absolutely leave the old one for dust is any given situation - this is my "everyday" car so the fuel efficiency (boring yeah I know!) is appreciated and it's definitely more comfortable than the old one - the ONLY negative thing about new vs old is that, on the rare occasion I'd rev it to the rafters, the old one sounds a bit better. That's it. I'm super glad I've got the new one. Totally understand where Chris is coming from in this review as the old car DOES sound a little better. I'm disappointed that the review comes across unbalanced as the emphasis is on the engine noise - which, whilst it isn't as good, it is still a decent sound. For me, in the rounds, the new Boxster is far better and the pros absolutely outweigh the cons. Best wishes all and happy driving!
"that's it"? lol. Are you a car person Zero quant data but guessing that's exactly what the main audience of the boxster is looking for, thrilling driving, not a fast generic sounding commuter. Sound is huge part especially when you seat inside actually driving the thing (not that odd boxy exterior of the 718 is any better too) Enjoy the Subaru vibes
Paul P Totally free with you. i love chris harris but he literally just said everything about the car is better, then said cos of the engine note is a worse car... erm...what? lolenjoy the 718, hopefully i will pick one up soon
I truly believe that Chris Harris is one of the very few 'voices' that real car guys love & listen too. Anyone can present numbers, fewer can drive with the rear end hanging out like him-- and, even less can present their thoughts as expressively. But, I have to disagree (CH is a HUGE Porsche fan- so, this isn't easy). The 718 Boxster/Cayman is the 'entry level' into Porsche products. Most won't know how delicious the flat 6 sounds were everywhere in the rev range, so- buyers don't know what they are missing. As a 'new' platform- it is simply stunning. Finally, enough power & torque, parts freely shared from the 911: brakes, intakes, etc... and, a higher end look interior & exterior. Truly, a 'base' Porsche that deserves the badge. And, the $12k savings of a base, base model will still make every Sunday drive very 'special' in Mr. Harris' own terminology. No excuses needed, it punches well above its weight, and, literally challenges a buyer to spend more- possibly for less- in another marque. I dare anyone to drive a 'base' Cayman against any other 'special' car: BMW M, AMG, McLaren with no measurement equipment- and, decide which is most satisfying. Then, whip out the window stickers. dollar for dollar, pound for pound- the 718 Boxster/Cayman will probably win for most buyers.
Porsche didn't spoil the Boxster/Cayman...out-of-control government environmental regulations did. These companies have to conform to increasingly stringent fuel economy and emissions standards which forces them to build smaller, lower-revving, turbocharged engines. "But we have to 'save the planet'" you might say. To which I would respond seriously!?!?! Does anyone really think these tiny volume boutique car makers like Porsche, Ferrari, Lamborghini, McLaren, etc. are "wrecking the planet" by putting in a higher-revving naturally aspirated engine? I think that's absurd. It's environmental alarmism run amok. These performance car makers as well as enthusiasts like us need to push government to inject some sanity into these regulations. Roll them back to some degree and especially for the tiny volume brands like Porsche. If we don't cool internal combustion engines WILL become a thing of the past.
Explain to me how that exemption would be worded. If you start make exceptions for sports cars then the manufacturers will start marketing all their cars as such.
It wasn't government that ruined the Porsche. Remember that Volkswagen scsndel, they were cheating on the emissions test. VW owns Porsche... So that why they now have to compile. I hate that Porsches got a bit boring, but I prefer to have a healthy planet. Also, I know that Porsche can make a fun, clean car. We just have to wait a couple of years and there are plenty of nice cars to enjoy while we wait.
Having owned both a 2.0L turbo 4 cylinder with 300hp and a 6 cylinder 3.0L NA both for over a year and 20k Miles in the real world the 6 cylinder was marginally more efficient at just over 30mpg rather than 28 for the 4 cylinder. The methods of how they test these cars for emissions scores are flawed.
As much as it pains me, petrol engines will be a thing of the past, and we really just need to accept that. Buy an 86 or mx5 and enjoy a N/A engine with a stick shift while you still can.
Chris carried on about the sound, justified but didn’t make for good viewing as he took it a bit far. Correct, the 718 is a whole new level to the previous gen, would recommend an exhaust to replace that factory one however as that exhaust was built for the prev gen 6, theres superb sound there just waiting to be unleashed. It’s similar to an STI (which l’ve always liked sound wise ) but much deeper & throatier. I own, track, tour and club my Boxster S & have zero complaints. Other drivers at the track do comment on how good it sounds & with good reason. It also now has the performance to match the Porsche badge. Perfect.
Ben Maccas Just so you know there are loads of these Chris Harris Drives videos on the topgear website which haven't been uploaded to yt. this video was on there a few months ago
981 video Chris sliding around turns and nice sounds winding out the gears. 781 driving around town like a guy who’s disappointed after banging a super model.
I was torn, in this video, between giving it a thumbs up or a thumbs down. One one hand, I LOVE Chris Harris. I love the way he describes the experience, the words, the little intonations, his hand gestures, his tones. If I wasnt watching, I would still not only understand but almost feel like I was there. Its why I watch his videos. He just gets how to describe the experience in a way that makes you feel like you are there with him. Now, the reason why I almost gave it a thumbs down. It has nothing to do with his review of the Boxster or with the Boxster itself. It has to do with the music. More to the point, how loud it is. Or more accurately, that it almost felt like someone was attempting to drown him out with the music without actually drowning him out. I dont mind some background music, it helps with giving the narrator help. This felt like someone was trying to get us to watch the video, listen to the music and make you forget that Chris was there. Some one should slap the audio guy in post production. Chris has made me laugh, smile and gringe more than almost anyone else.
It's been like a year since Chris Harris been doing top gear? and like 2 years since Clarkson got canned? And you all are still bitching boycotting and disliking videos? Jeez, grow up you guys...
"you all are'... you must be blind, can't you see the like to dislike ratio, anyone with functioning eyes would OBVIOUSLY see there are way much more likes
krocialblack well chris harris has the worst opinions on cars. He doesn't appreciate affordable cars and everyday cars like the old crew. New too gear is trash 👎👎👎🖕🖕🖕
For me, a big concern would be the throttle response. A Porsche is more about the feel than the outright performance. I wonder if Porsche is now doing what BMW did back in ~2010, giving up the precision and feel for 'more powah' and efficiency.
I can drive my 981 GTS at any speed and giggle or make heads turn with a simple down shift from 1600rpm at 20mph. Without looking people assume the 718 will be a fiesta ST with a silly exhaust. I used to own a faster turbocharged car and in a turbo if you don’t give it 100% it isnt fun. The 981 at 3k rpm half throttle is still absolute joy. Until now people didn’t buy Porsches just for numbers. They were about passion of driving enjoyment. The engine and noise is number one. Now the 718 turbo is about box ticking. Chris says what we all know. You can love your 718 all you want, good for you. Fantastic car, justifies being loved entirely. But it’s purpose is, as he says, blunt instrument, opposed to a Steinway. Why don’t any of us porsche owners drive fast Audis? Blunt instrument. I could sell my GTS for a Nissan GTR. Better in every measurable way. Is that relevant? Notto me.
Chris, you are one of my favorite reviewers. I hope you can get over the change in sound since it is such a spectacular car. That’s life, nothing stays the same. And, it is better in every other way.
The thing is... Comparatively to the old boxster, this one is more of a legacy car. The original 718 had a 4 cylinder engine and that's what they tried to recreate.
geronimonimo nimo no, they're just adhering to ridiculous EU emission regulations. Nothing about a romantic take on a past car, it's a cynical move to make progress ( ie, make it faster) even though it's heavier and provides worse mpg than the last one.
IMO not that most people would do it, but you can put aftermarket mufflers on the 718 to "recapture" a strong throaty noise; if that is your complaint. That is easy correction for an otherwise brilliant 718. But to me I don't buy a sports car for the noise it makes and that 718 is planted. With a tune you are over 400bhp easy.
as a cayman 987 owner i can say one thing, yea the sound is important, but most important is the speed, so when you drive on the road full throttle and an audi a8 passes you, you question yourself why do i own a sport car.. a porsche.. if it's not fast.. if a big over 2 ton 4 door saloon passes you easily.. and when you get at a stop light and pretend you don't wanna race the other car because you know you will get smoked, in those moments you realise sound is nothing compared to performance
Wow ! Finest and most intelligent way of destroying the 718 I have seen, so far ! So, does this mean, Chris Harris is now not only banned by Ferrari, but also Porsche ?
Stefan Just if you follow him on Instagram or Twitter you'll see he's definitely not banned from porsche. he's driving around a 911R lately, so if anything his opinion in this is just spoiled by an objectively better car by the same brand
Stefan Just No, because he's only making a resonable criticism of their car. He got banned from Ferrari (In the past, he's not now) for posting a lengthy and detailed account of their dodgy policitcs and practises.
Ya know what I hate? People saying "BBC=Bring Back Clarkson" or "#BringBackClarkson" Shut up! He's been fired! Watch The Grand Tour if you miss him so much! I hate these 10 year olds who don't understand it.
Agreed Clarkson used to be funny but has become an annoying real life Homer Simpson, Chris Harris is a good replacement and actually loves cars and has intelligence
I’m soooo glad I bought the 981 then. Between 3-4,000 rpm theirs huge pops and crackles. 4-5,000 it’s a angry pot of boiling water. After 5,000 it sounds like a dragon snarling. He isn’t wrong about how “it makes 9 different sounds depending on the rev range” on the flat 6. And if you want to check it out I have videos on my channel. (Shameless plug). :( lol Great review though!
If they came out with the successor to this, and it was slower, worse handling, worse interior, and worse looking, but sounded better, would you buy it? No, so this comment is irrelevant.
Chris, I'm overjoyed that Top Gear is still allowing you to post reviews in your own Chris Harris On Cars format, despite them being less palatable for the kind of audience that is typically drawn to Top Gear. That was not a dig on TG or its fandom at all though; while the series never got on much with me, I understand and appreciate that it found a way to make a car show that both motoring enthusiasts and *non-enthusiasts* can and still do enjoy! Your style is all its own, and your critiques might as well be gospel - I mean, besides your less than stellar opinion of the MX-5 ;) I'm happy to have watched you rise to become a household name over the past few years, and I hope the Top Gear gig works out long term for ya.
we could be happy that the entire 718 range is not 4 pots becuase the gt4 and spyder will have six bangers. but for now buy an 981 gts. and the 911 still has six cylinders
Man i would love to see a Boxter or Cayman with the new gt3 engine. It could be a mighty monster of a car. just imagine a Cayman with 500 ps. It would be awesome.
Chris Harris is also not as loud as the original cast of Top Gear. To everyone who has an “emotional attachment” to the last version, get on with your life! The world changes! this is a better performing car and it’s high time for better fuel efficiency. Even sports car owners have a responsibility to the environment that we all share.
My 981 Cayman S 3.4l flat 6 with PDK/Chrono, Cobb Pro tuned to 364hp /420Nm, 1.25inch exhaust bypass is a very cost-effective way to outdo 911 performance. 0-100km/h 3.89sec........and sound magnificent. Porsche bombed out with the 718 in all turbo variants, sadly.
@kim Jong-unsub The 981s torque peaks around 6k rpm, the 718 peaks at 1900rpm and is flat to about 5000 so the 718 is quicker at lower rpm. I've driven the 718 but to me, it's not a thrilling drive, no sex appeal!
@kim Jong-unsub I've seen a 718s tuned to 450hp and 540nnm....yeah, you extract a lot more with turbo tunes, so take heart there! The issue here with a turbo flat 4 is the engine note. Everything else about the 718, bar the PDK setup, is very, very good. Now if they put a turbo flat 6 in the 718 that would be most interesting!
All those people mourning about the 4 cylinder engines likely dont know, that prior to the Boxster / Cayman every single small Porsche came with a 4 cylinder. So Porsche is just returning to, what they did before, and perhaps should have kept on doing all the time. And hey if its really so important, then luckily the 6 cylinder models will remain available on the second hand market for many many years to come. So stop mourning and frankly get yourself a life.
Bugster987 As somebody who owned two 981's and several 987's I agree. Had my Porsche Experience two weeks ago and the sound of the 718 doesn't bother me as much as I thought it would and on track it felt better than my GTS.
The performance upgrade will keep most previous model owners like yourself happy. It's a very niche group that will have a problem with the engine note/character
I have a GT4 and love it to death, but at the risk of annoying the Porsche purists, the 718 Boxster S and 718 Cayman S are awesome, and probably better value for money than a 911. Flat 4 and sound be damned. What a great car.
Well, for the hipsters who will inevitably complain about how good everything is getting, there’s always the 986 with 205 hp and IMS problems. You could probably even afford it!
I'd rather a normally aspirated 6 than a turbo 4. Faster, though the newer car may be, I won't be trading my boxter for a 4 banger any time soon. I think Porche should have kept the flat 6 as an option.
Such a shame about the engine, personally for me, sports car ownership is just as much about the noise as it is about handling and speed. Take away the noise and you have to drive fast to enjoy it, which isn't very good for safety or my licence.
+Richard Fanders, take your car to the track and you'll find that you won't need to drive fast on the street anymore. The first thing you'll learn is that, your car is waaaaay more capable than you are. Don't worry, all track rats have experienced this learning curve.
Chris Harris is the man,,,and he races. Love his reviews.......Grab a 981 now,,,before the prices start going up. You will never see a NA flat 6 in a Cayman/Boxster again,,,,unless you are willing to pay big bucks for the GT-4.....and that proves my point! The flat 6 will continue propel the top of the line Cayman GT4's...,that should tell you something.
The entire video he's praising the car baring the throttle response lagging a tiny bit. Then goes on to say the car is worse because it doesn't make the same noise it used to? It looks fantastic, better than any Boxter before it. Drives brilliantly but it's worse? The same could be said with the Cayman I suppose, which is ridiculous that the noise a car makes, means it's either a good or bad car.
Chris talks so much about how it acts like a different car - and Porsche obviously agreed. That's why they called it the 718; Notice not a single Boxtster badge anywhere on the car. It's meant to be a different creature a bit.
I don't know what he's talking about...I've never heard another 4 cylinder that sounds like the 718. Its the best sounding 4 cylinder I've ever heard. To say this car was spoiled over the previous version, is just more annoying and typical biased drivel. More power, more capable, faster...and yet worse than last year? Riiiight.
Why is the music so loud and persistent? I can barely hear Chris's commentary around 4:20 on and all the while talking about the noise from the engine, I hear music.
Nailed this review in the first 2 minutes...and why I looked for and found a 4k mile, time capsule 981 Boxster S. Such a better decision and better Porsche experience.
You said it was fast several times, if it’s fast who cares about how many cylinders it has. Porsche has always used smaller motors compared to American sports cars etc.
MPG... blah blah blah... you can't tell me that Porsche feels comfortable asking for $80-$100k for a Bosxter S or Cayman S but thinks a gas guzzler tax would turn away buyers. I'd loved for Porsche to put a standard rear gearing in the 981, upgrade the brakes(like they did), and offer the 3.8L engine. Instead.... turbo-4. The thing is the 718 looks amazing, and deserves an amazing engine to match.
Hi All, as an owner of a manual 2017, 718 Porsche 2.0 and previous owner of a 2010 Boxster S I can tell you all categorically the 718 is just miles miles better. I own a 718s and I agree with you in full.

Period.
classic case of post-purchase confirmatory bias😂😂
I agree. Mine is 2017 and I actually love the sound. And it's cheaper on road tax etc than the straight 6. It's better all round hands down lol.
For those of you complaining about this car having 4-cylinders, Europe is putting higher taxes and penalties on cars with higher emissions and fuel consumption. Porsche is doing what they can to preserve the sports car experience, all the while changing with the times. We should be thankful they are thinking along these lines.
And selling big SUVs in the meantime..
Gilliam Simmerman Yeah great idea. Put the engine of ur top line car in the lower ones. U are a Marketing genius
Garbage compared to the gorgeous 6 cylinder previous gen.
Not garbage, actually a better car, but the exhaust sound can turn you off
Yazeed Saber Not even close.
That settles it. I'm cancelling my 718 order and going back to the McLaren P1.
Sensi Bleb 😂
Sensi Bleb It would have been enough with the Golf R 2017 which beats the 718... ;)
3DFX dude shut up about shitty golfR,its slow garbage.
Own it, love it. Sounds great. Sure a 6cyl sounds different but so does an 8cyl. To each his own. It's a drivers car and honestly better than a 911.
Being the owner of a last year GTS I think you are spot on.
The fact that one can drive the GTS or the GT4 at 40-50 km/h (24-31 mph) and make a down shift and the sound it makes just gives you a big smile
Huh. This Chris Harris guy is actually pretty great.
winterloggan He is Great :D
Is this is mum again 😂
Silver exterior, red leather interior = Timeless
How much
red leather interior = no style
Terrible you mean
The silver over red interior is a classic combo, for you dumbos. From the 50’s, there weren’t as many stupids back then.
Sliver is boring
The Great Chris Harris!!...Damn I wish Harris could do both TG, & new videos on "Chris Harris on cars..
C.H, brother you are easily the best in the business, & have been for years now. Anybody who says otherwise is simply kidding themselves
Michael McGrath, for the love of 104 octane stop being so sensitive. We are men, not small school girls.
Just say you disagree, then move on.
you are right man, he is probably the best there is right now
SteliosE92 👍
Hilarious take on the turbo. It took me two test drives a week apart to overcome the confusion and sort out all it’s brilliance. 18 GTS here 👍
I didn't test drive the GTS but the base only. 2 months later, deposit paid for the GTS. 0 regret till this moment. :)
I have the GTS as well. Love it.
Goes like the wind, puts a huge smile on your face and looks feels and sounds
amazing. The neighbours love the noise too. Perfect car :)
Thank you Mr Porsche, you made my "old" NA flat 6 classic right now
I like Chris Harris On Cars and Chris Harris Drives more than regular Top Gear because I feel like he's talking to me like a fellow car enthusiast.
Keep telling yourself that, mate.
"Just not as good as the one you could afford last year!" That's the best comment of the review Chris! ;-)
"could have bought" was what he said, but I agree with you :)
Oh my God! the Top Gear downvoters have grown up, no more automatic dislikes when a video is posted. I'm so proud of you guys. Oh shit, they are still in the comments section crying about the Clarkson.
Jamil Mukhtar it'll go on for a while till they remember they can go on amazon and get their thing still
Jamil Mukhtar everyone likes chris harris
James Fonda sorry I read the wrong comment totally agree with you but your still a ........
James Fonda no you've got it wrong I love top gear no matter how much it changes and I always will
Jamil Mukhtar Thank you for reminding me. Disliking the video now thanks to your comment.
I LOVE THE 2.5!
was so close to get a 718 but ended up with 981 GTS and man I'm pleased with my decision
Exactly like me!! Same!! The choice will have to be made this week..
I'd take the 981 six over the 718 four any day.
james liu ...the car is inanimate...your watching a presenters given take on a ehicle...the presenter is 80% of the video...
So pics of your 981?
Do all youtube car reviewers just watch each others reviews and then just say the same thing!? Everyone banging on about the engine noise is just boring. I speak as someone that's owned a Boxster 987 and am about to buy a Boxster 718. Comparing the two:
- new Boxster looks far better
- 718 will be newer and more reliable
- 718 performance is FAR better. I would absolutely leave the old one for dust is any given situation
- this is my "everyday" car so the fuel efficiency (boring yeah I know!) is appreciated and it's definitely more comfortable than the old one
- the ONLY negative thing about new vs old is that, on the rare occasion I'd rev it to the rafters, the old one sounds a bit better.
Depending on how you drive you may find it's worse on mpg than your 987
"that's it"? lol. Are you a car person
Zero quant data but guessing that's exactly what the main audience of the boxster is looking for, thrilling driving, not a fast generic sounding commuter.
Sound is huge part especially when you seat inside actually driving the thing (not that odd boxy exterior of the 718 is any better too)
Enjoy the Subaru vibes
Paul P Totally free with you. i love chris harris but he literally just said everything about the car is better, then said cos of the engine note is a worse car... erm...what? lolenjoy the 718, hopefully i will pick one up soon
poor justification to be honest very poor..981...all the way
I truly believe that Chris Harris is one of the very few 'voices' that real car guys love & listen too.
Buy the 981 Boxster GTS or the Spyder. I'll go with the Boxster Spyder
Top Tanupat is the spider the one with a tent for its roof?
山内淳カイル Something like that , but the 981 Spyder's roof isn't fingernail-busting like the one James May reviewed. It's much easier to do
The 981 GTS sounds amazing.
Oh yes ! My 981 Spyder has been a real treat from day one. Ticks all the important boxes for a real driver's car.
The spyder is like $100k you can't cross shop a normal boxtser s with a used Spyder which is a third more expensive.
Matthew, spot on ! And as far as I'm led to believe, the figures on paper don't translate to reality in terms of validated efficiency and emissions.
Perfect.
Agree do the same with mine and luv it. I also ditched the factory exhaust for a straight pipe set up. One word. Incredible!
Thankyou Topgear for still allowing Chris Harris to do reviews even when the main shows off the air. Hes the best out there atm!!
Ben Maccas Just so you know there are loads of these Chris Harris Drives videos on the topgear website which haven't been uploaded to yt. this video was on there a few months ago
I enjoy how Porsche listened and said "Alright! We get it! Have your flat 6 back!"
except it cost $88,000 now lol. it’s just not worth it for so much money for a 4 cylinder.
I know right?
"you all are'... you must be blind, can't you see the like to dislike ratio, anyone with functioning eyes would OBVIOUSLY see there are way much more likes
krocialblack well chris harris has the worst opinions on cars. He doesn't appreciate affordable cars and everyday cars like the old crew. New too gear is trash 👎👎👎🖕🖕🖕
You need a tissue to wipe away those tears of butthurt?
Dawww, they got in your nerves? Hahaha
Driving this car on that road. Gotta be one of the luckiest guys on earth
For me, a big concern would be the throttle response. A Porsche is more about the feel than the outright performance. I wonder if Porsche is now doing what BMW did back in ~2010, giving up the precision and feel for 'more powah' and efficiency.
Only video today not about the Ford GT. Good job TopGear. :D
Finally a Chris Harris video without thousand cut scenes, more this please!
Porsche Boxster is the best sports car ever made. Put a 6 cylinder turbo in a 718 and you have perfection.
Nah...you're getting silly. That would be like the LT1 Miata.
The brutal direct honesty is refreshing. I won't even bother test driving a 718. But where do I go from my 981CS then?
You upgrade to 981 Boxster Spyder or Cayman GT4.
140k cdn in.my area...out of my reach
Get a 981 GTS.
as a cayman 987 owner i can say one thing, yea the sound is important, but most important is the speed, so when you drive on the road full throttle and an audi a8 passes you, you question yourself why do i own a sport car.. a porsche.. if it's not fast.. if a big over 2 ton 4 door saloon passes you easily.. and when you get at a stop light and pretend you don't wanna race the other car because you know you will get smoked, in those moments you realise sound is nothing compared to performance
Chris has come a long way in the last 7 years. He looks so young in this video!
Porsche is gradually preparing us for all-electric monotony.
I don't think anyone can look at a Taycan and say "monotonous"
Not me .
Wow ! Finest and most intelligent way of destroying the 718 I have seen, so far ! So, does this mean, Chris Harris is now not only banned by Ferrari, but also Porsche ?
Nope, Porsche would never stoop that low.
Fingers crossed, it would be a huge loss. (On a serious note: I agree, and hope for Chris to get his bum into a manual gearbox GT3, soonest)
Stefan Just See, becoz now the Golf R 2017 beats a Porsche... ;)
Finally a review on the 718 that isn't total sugar-coated BS. That engine sounds like crap and there's no point kowtowing to Porsche about that fact.
I have to agree, drove one, was fun enough but sounded bloody awful - Like in a cheap subaru way but without the character once on the road.
Ya know what I hate? People saying "BBC=Bring Back Clarkson" or "#BringBackClarkson" Shut up! He's been fired! Watch The Grand Tour if you miss him so much! I hate these 10 year olds who don't understand it.
Buckington Bear but you just said it yourself! I've never heard of that acronym. Thanks. I'll post it myself. BBC!
Agreed Clarkson used to be funny but has become an annoying real life Homer Simpson, Chris Harris is a good replacement and actually loves cars and has intelligence
your comment made a difference. be proud....smh
Buckington Bear you are probably 10 yrs old cause you have never seen them
+Drugs Stig I've been watch Top Gear ever since I can remember. Which is about 10 years.
:( lol
Great review though!
So they suction out the soul and give it more speed that can't often be used in day to day driving.... but it's greener. No thanks.
By the looks of the road validated figures not really greener either.
A better performer that's lost its soul. I'll keep my GTS in carmine. Only thing I personally like is the updated head unit on the new boxster.
we could be happy that the entire 718 range is not 4 pots becuase the gt4 and spyder will have six bangers. but for now buy an 981 gts. and the 911 still has six cylinders
Cool video. Where is that Road?
Please people, keep believing these are “worse”. I’ll happily nab one when everyone decides they suck.
It sounds better in person...
Man i would love to see a Boxter or Cayman with the new gt3 engine. It could be a mighty monster of a car. just imagine a Cayman with 500 ps. It would be awesome.
Hello from 5 years in the future. I hope you're very well aware of the GT4RS by now :)
@@brandonsever2576 huh, guess I pat myself on the back for making that happen. :D
Don't sleep! MORE VIDEOS CHRIS HARRIS!
Just wait until they are all electric. Then this one will be full of personality in comparison
My favorite car in NFS Porsche 2000
Surprised he didn't mention why Porsche went the 4 cyl route, it was purely to get the emissions down. The 6 cyl wouldn't get down enough, so I read.
Love the background music in this one....I guess it had to be good since the car music disappoints
Get the top down on a 6 cylinder 3.4 litre 981 Boxster S with PDK/Chrono. Utterly fantastic, the best sports car in the world.
Spot-on with the engine description.
Agree 100% I sold mine after 3 months of ownership - hated it
How much did you lose?
Jamie Coats Best replacement would honestly be a 981 Boxster GTS.
Bs
All those people mourning about the 4 cylinder engines likely dont know, that prior to the Boxster / Cayman every single small Porsche came with a 4 cylinder. So Porsche is just returning to, what they did before, and perhaps should have kept on doing all the time.
And hey if its really so important, then luckily the 6 cylinder models will remain available on the second hand market for many many years to come. So stop mourning and frankly get yourself a life.
90% of buyers will just not care about the negatives that the road testers are pulling up on the 718
Bugster987 As somebody who owned two 981's and several 987's I agree. Had my Porsche Experience two weeks ago and the sound of the 718 doesn't bother me as much as I thought it would and on track it felt better than my GTS.
The performance upgrade will keep most previous model owners like yourself happy. It's a very niche group that will have a problem with the engine note/character
I just reviewed a Boxster S on my channel. Great car, I want one and I own a 993 Turbo
I wonder who has upgraded from 981 to 982
Chris Harris is the only thing I really like about the new top gear
I see a 3.0 liter turbocharged flat 6 from 991.2 in the boxsters future.
No need. They're perfect as is. No need to "hot rod" it.
I have a GT4 and love it to death, but at the risk of annoying the Porsche purists, the 718 Boxster S and 718 Cayman S are awesome, and probably better value for money than a 911. Flat 4 and sound be damned. What a great car.
Of course I'm gonna ask, where can I find the music playing in the background of the video?
Well, for the hipsters who will inevitably complain about how good everything is getting, there’s always the 986 with 205 hp and IMS problems. You could probably even afford it!
I'd rather a normally aspirated 6 than a turbo 4. Faster, though the newer car may be, I won't be trading my boxter for a 4 banger any time soon. I think Porche should have kept the flat 6 as an option.
Same here
They have. Plenty of 6cyl versions with the gts platforms available. 4 pots for standard & s models, hybrids on the way so plenty if choice for all
@@Malcom2345 For over six figures, tho.
Don't worry, all track rats have experienced this learning curve.
hey Chris, where can I get such a perfect green flat cap? I´m desperately seeking for a similar one ;o) and great vid, btw!
4.0L 6 is fitted to boxster and cayman GTS from 2020, 4pot turbos on the standard and s models. Hybrids on the way. Plenty of options going fwd.
The entire video he's praising the car baring the throttle response lagging a tiny bit.
Then goes on to say the car is worse because it doesn't make the same noise it used to?
It looks fantastic, better than any Boxter before it. Drives brilliantly but it's worse?
The same could be said with the Cayman I suppose, which is ridiculous that the noise a car makes, means it's either a good or bad car.
which location is it? I wanna drive there.
maestro8766 looks like North Wales
Any dash cam or GoPro footage pal!!! Love a good b road 😎
Have you got an email address I can send it to… don't really want to put it online if you know what I mean! Lol!
Looool yea I got ya ;) will fire it over for you a bit later. I think the EVO Triangle is next on my list… want to do the Peak District too!
981 all the way!
Which one is better corvette c8 vs boxster?
A corvette sounds better than any Porsche, doesn’t mean a damn thing when you drive one.
Riiiight.
Couldn't disagree more. I find the new car much more fun to drive. And even though I expected to miss the old sound, I don't.
Why is the music so loud and persistent? I can barely hear Chris's commentary around 4:20 on and all the while talking about the noise from the engine, I hear music.
These 4 cylinder Boxster / Cayman versions are tanking in the marketplace. Porsche shows these cars are off almost 40% in sales compared to last year.
Nailed this review in the first 2 minutes...and why I looked for and found a 4k mile, time capsule 981 Boxster S. Such a better decision and better Porsche experience.
hi everybody I think the new top gear crew is as good as the old one but I want to see more mind blowing challenges like the old top gear did.
Also Porsche kept the price of the Cayman and substantially increased the price of the Boxster, so now an older Boxster is much more appealing...
Couldn't agree more, as an owner of the 981, i've been shopping used 2016 GTS because i didn't connect with this new 718.
1:31 -1:38 Describes the new TopGear vs the last TopGear. :/ At least now its like TopGear is a supplement to the Grand Tour.
think I will hang on to my old 02 Boxster S with the flat 6 and manual 6 speed.......
Better mind that IMS bearing, tho.
Ok, get it.
More importantly: anyone knows the location where this was filmed?
Really looking forward to do some open top driving there myself!
it looks like North Yorkshire to me !
Anyone know where this was filmed? Gorgeous
It's a great car! Picked mine up a couple of months ago and made a vlog on it. :)
