He also had cobble stone and could've made a furnace the reason your idea would've failed is he would've had to break a block to walk on the furnace

If you put diamond ore in a furnace(which they could've gotten by standing on some cobblestone generated by lava and water) and smelted it you would get a diamond.

Me smacking my head when the only thing they had to do to get diamonds was to just smelt the ore in a furnace.
They couldn’t smelt it cuz they was not playing on the new update they was playing in the old one and idk don’t mean to sound rude but u should look At the texturepack the new blocks have that you smelt

They went through so much trouble breaking the diamond ore to get diamonds while there was cobblestone right by them and they could have walked over it, gotten the cobblestone, made a furnace, and smelted the ore to get the diamonds
