Back in 1973 I took a night class on auto body repair, they showed us how to use LED with the wold padle and bee's wax. We used it on high crown area by the headlights . I have the same shrinking disks both the small & large disks...I use blue layoff dye that tool makers use for a guide coat.. What you are working on now I need to do on my Bondo Condo...my Day2 will reveal all the rusted away metal..the long panel rocker is bad I will need a the rocket to be around 13 to 14 inches tall . To help with the warping when welding I found they make a gell that works as a heatsink . I will use it on my long panel not skilled enough to do the led been to long.. Ross the long panel repair is coming a along thanks for sharing your methods .
Vw Rosstorations No just jack stands i will need to keep losing the weight so i fit under it..actually with the cargo floor removed i will try to work from the top as much as i can..i need a lift like mustie1 but my garage ceiling is not very tall or high..
Thanks Val. Originally I was going to butt weld, just as I did the rear lower arch quarters. But the replacement panel came with the joggled edge anyway. And seeing as it was worth my while letting the whole panel in, I decided to go with the lap joint that was present. It’s the only lap joint that I have ever done. I do prefer to butt. So no pros and cons for me really just preference. I’ve heard people talk about lap joints being a moisture trap, and I can see their logic, maybe someone in the know can chime in on that debate... Thanks for stopping by...
Cool, I suppose if you use led instead of bondo it's more water-proof (+ seam sealer..). Do you have any tips on seams repair? You left the seam and welded new panel just next to old seam? Are there any BKMs on that topic? Good luck with the project!
I will seam sill the inner side of the repair. Just take your time with the welding, it’s easy to get carried away once you start. Weld then move to a cooler area then repeat. I do have quite a lot of heat distortion and unevenness within the panel still that I am still yet to revisit. It wasn’t all because of the welding, just age related dents as well. And I was with taking my time. I don’t know what a BKMs is?
I am going to seam sill on both side of the vertical lines where the panels meet with the POR15 seam sealer. It really does dry as hard as concrete. I can’t see there will be a problem with water ingress using that method. It will outlast my lifetime I reckon.
Nice one, Ross....Some serious skills being shown in everyone of your videos....thanks again for sharing.
Thanks for that...much appreciated. Take care..

BestKnownMethod to deal with original vertical seams between the side panels.Ones that like to crack and rust after renovations...
