Your knowledge of musical history is inadequate. "Phantasy" is the Elizabethan era spelling, and is thus VERY English. It has been deliberately used in the titles of numerous pieces written in the 20th century as entries for the Cobbett Competition, whose rules specified that the piece must conform to the Elizabethan Phantasy format. Most famous, perhaps, is Benjamin Britten's Phantasy Quartet for oboe and string trio.
