Having studied with Chris, counting was one of the best tools for learning and understanding what I’m playing I got from him. Many other things, but counting helped lay the environment where ideas could grow.
Any time I see this man in whatever context (behind a drum set or not), it just instantly brings a smile to my face... He just radiates joy and happiness! Truly a gifted and blessed man in so many ways. Love this guy!
I was one of those drummers on a Coleman drum camp and I can say.....this counting thing kicked my butt that day but I worked on it and it changed my drumming forever! Thanks Crc 👊👊👊
Chris C, I love you brother, your spirit is so awesome, and the way you teach is so universal. Hope to take a lesson one day. Love the nod to Drummers Collective, I studied with Michael Carvin at the Collective, many moons ago! Take care Chris.
I studied w Chris; indeed we did the vocal counting on EVERYTHING. Changed my whole game. And still changing/improving it (like he says in the video)… love you Chris!
This man is The kindness in person... What a joy is listening to him no just playing with is insane but also is humility when he speaks. Love u dude!!!! Keep being that enormous human being and keep druming has boss!!!! What a journey am having!!
Chris is such a Huge Blessing to the drumming Community and his Sense of Humour while Teaching makes it so Interesting and Great 🥳. Thanks Chris Coleman for Continually Inspiring me to be much better every day ❤️🥺🙏
Meet Chris a number yrs ago at GC he was in town playing for an acquaintance of mines wedding, he’s always been a comical and funny guy lol can’t really remember all that was said but he’s a very funny and personable person like he is now lol wish I still had a pair of the Vic firth sticks he signed for me 🤦🏽♂️. Treated me like he knew me ! Will Forever be a fan of this dude ! God really gave this man THEE GIFT !!
THANK YOU! MORE LESSONS FROM CHRIS PLEASE haha. Such a nice guy and a beast behind the drums - had the great pleasure of meeting him a few years back in Nashville, TN.
Yeah, this video has some really valuable, no nonsense information. Counting was huge for me, because it allowed me to understand where players chose to place certain patterns and embellishments, eliminating most of the guesswork. Even just being aware of the subdivision helps, because you're able to change the entire conviction and integrity of a single idea. As Chris demonstrated in the video, switching up dynamics is another huge factor in milking the same one pattern into a handful of new ideas too. In my opinion, this is really where a lot of the Gospel cats shine.
You are the greatest teacher my man much respect although I'm a bass player you taught me some things and you can call it percussively, syncopation-wise, Para-diddles, quadra-piddle, etc., I love it... Thanx much bro
Mehn the kick added a whole new dynamic to the rhythm. You can see the level of independence this man has got. Worked on just the stickings counting out loud ,, and boy it was amazing. Thanks Chris Coleman 🤯
Interesting....I was doing those exact same paradidle exercises (incorporating) back when I first learned paradiddles, in high school, as well. Until, this video, this is the first time I've seen a player do these EXACT same ones...including the counting. He's right, counting with the exercises is incredibly important, if you want to get the most out of this. I know it made a huge difference in m playing. Great video.....thanks for sharing!
GREAT video and I absolutely said the word "Balance" out loud when Chris asked everybody to repeat and not flam haha....I've never been an outloud counter but I'm totally gonna try this. Thanks Chris.
Daddy Daddy Daddy!!! Hmmmmmm This is REVIVAL for me This will produce another version of me. I want to be the best drummer I have ever seen... Ride on, and show us the way Sir! Thank you
If anyone wants a double bass application to these paradiddle beats, check out “Liquid Fire” by Gojira. Same pattern in the hands, but the foot pattern is 3 16th note kicks followed by 2 16th note rests (kkkrr) and it displaces. At the end of the song it’s the same foot pattern but double paradiddles in the hands😵💫
I might be able to count, but I definitely can't say left right sticking instructions that fast. That's probably why I would never be a teacher. Awesome lesson, keep up the great instruction!
Great lesson. Another one would be showing people how to work on accuracy/precision. Recording oneself; comparing each 16th note played with a tight 16th-note click track; identifying which notes stray too far ahead or behind (e.g., 50MS); drills to correct, etc.
We NEED a VFJams Live with him in it!!!
RIGHT!!!!!
They need to bring it back, seems like a long while since the last series.
He will shut the show down.!
Chris is a gift to the drumming community.
Ciao Da quando sei sei ufficio ufficio sei via po e tu sei

He should teach teachers... of anything. Clear, specific, funny, engaging, engaged and so human!
